    Patrick Filteau wins Event #1!

    2018/12/12 - 20:25 by

Patrick Filteau has emerged as the winner of the first event in the 8-Year Anniversary Series! Today’s NL Short Deck Hold’em tournament attracted 49 entries and played out over 7.25 hours in the Tournament Hall here at Playground. Patrick won $1,083 for his efforts – the amount agreed to in a 4-way deal (see below) plus the $143 that was reserved for the winner.

Play had gotten down to 4-way action when the players inquired about making a deal, and after counting each of the players’ stacks at the time, ICM chop calculations were made while leaving something for the eventual winner. The chip leader at the time was Roy Rochette, and he was just as eager as anyone to conclude an agreement.

The numbers came back and the players had secured the following payouts:

    • Roy Rochette – $1,110
    • Matthew Willard – $920
    • Dylan Thibault – $800
    • Patrick Filteau – $945

Play continued 4-way for just minutes when Matthew was eliminated in 4th. Dylan fought valiantly for a while, but with the bulk of his prize already in the books, it wasn’t long before he also hit the rail and left just two players: Roy and Patrick.

The heads up battle took over 30 minutes to play out, and although Roy took an early lead, eventually leaving Patrick playing just 160K – Patrick picked his spots well, scored a huge double up and then sealed the deal several minutes later when his Ace of Spades Queen of Clubs were victorious against Roy’s Queen of Spades Jack of Hearts on a Ace of Hearts Queen of Hearts Ace of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts board.

    Congratulations!

From top of the pile to out early, your luck can change just that fast.

After a great day of poker, Mr. Karahkwase Richmond leaves the final table in 5th place, in the middle of level 17. He was crippled the hand before by Roy Rochette, losing 80% of his chips. Roy was kind enough to finish the job quickly and painlessly the very next hand, defeating Karahkwase’s two pairs with a Queen-high straight.

The “weird wheel” (A-6-7-8-9) strikes again!

Alec Brandstatter takes home $270 after being eliminated in 6th place, falling victim to a river that didn’t go his way. Both players were all in preflop.

Alec: Ace of Hearts Queen of Spades

Patrick: Jack of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds

The cards were dealt 7 of Spades 8 of Clubs Queen of Diamonds 6 of Spades Ace of Diamonds, and although he was initially in the lead with his pair of queens, it was that last ace that turned Alec’s opponent Patrick’s hand from a nothingburger into a winner! Better luck next time Alec, it was a well played tournament.

    What a shame!

While we were writing up the last post we missed the hand that eliminated the final pre-bubble player. Mr. Frederic Normand. It is a shame because not only because Fred was leading the pack by a huge margin for much of the day, but also because we were joking at the last break that he would be eliminated in 8th!

According to Frederic, he was busted holding QQ, all in against a superior KK.

Regardless, it was a good day of poker for Frederic. Better luck next time!

With 8 players remaining (and only 7 getting paid), the pressure is on here in the Short Deck tournament, now entering it’s 5th hour. After a few preflop all ins by Frederic Normand went un-called, Matthew Willard finally decided to step up.

Except this time it wasn’t Frederic he was calling, it was Roy Rochette.

Roy: Ace of Hearts 6 of Diamonds

Matthew: Ace of Spades King of Hearts

The cards were dealt 9 of Spades Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 8 of Hearts 7 of Hearts. The last card (along with his own 6 of Diamonds) gave Roy the A-6-7-8-9 straight, doubling him up and allowing him a little breathing room to continue at the final table.

Dylan Thibault was one card away from a bubble elimination, but was saved by the ace of spades.

Dylan had shoved preflop for his remaining 55,000 chips, and he found a dance partner in Roy Rochette.

Roy: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs

Dylan: 9 of Hearts Queen of Diamonds

Initially dominated by Roy’s hand, the cards were dealt 6 of Clubs 8 of Clubs Jack of Diamonds 7 of Spades. The only card that could save Dylan was an ace.

Lo and behold, the Ace of Spades was dealt on the river and Dylan raked in the chips, saved on the brink of elimination! He lives to play another hand.

We are mid-way through level 13, and we are down to the final table of 9 players. With only the top 7 getting paid, the pressure is on for those with the short stacks. Good luck to all!
