    Playground 200 Champion: Tommy Dion

    2018/12/16 - 19:27 by

Tommy Dion of Granby, QC has been crowned the Champion of the 8-Year Anniversary edition of the Playground 200! He outplayed, out-drew, and outlasted 706 players in the event to emerge as the Champion, and the final Playground 200 Champion of 2018.

It was clear that something really special was happening relatively early in the day when Tommy took over a clear chip lead after having started with just 165,000 in chips – the equivalent of 6bb! Once he took the lead, although he took a few hits, Tommy stayed among the top 2 or 3 players the entire rest of the way. When the tournament dropped to 6 players, they chose to do an ICM chop (reserving $1,503 for 1st place) and Tommy was in 2nd place for a $14,315 score – and a chance at the additional prize.

By the final hand of play the two remaining players were playing virtually blind, and all the chips got in with Tommy holding King of Hearts 8 of Spades while his opponent, Patrick Rabouin-St-Laurent, held Jack of Hearts 2 of Spades. The board ran out 3 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs 7 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 4 of Clubs and Tommy’s King kicker to the pair on the board was good enough for the win!

Playground 200 Champion: Tommy Dion: $15,818

    Heads up

    2018/12/16 - 18:56 by

Heads up play has begun – quite loosely, considering the deal that has been made – between Tommy Dion and Patrick Rabouin St-Laurent. The players also chose to raise the blinds by a considerable amount – they’re playing the equivalent of level 36: 100K/200K with no ante.

The day started with two players named “Patrick St-Laurent” – and only now at the last possible moment has one of the two been eliminated. Patrick St-Laurent – as compared with Patrick Rabouin-St-Laurent – has been eliminated in 3rd place.

    3rd Place: Patrick St-Laurent, $9,940

There are now just 4 players remaining in the Playground 200 after Mitcheal Ferguson has been eliminated in 5th place for $11,870.

Mitcheal opened the action with a utg shove, and action folded around to Patrick Rabouin-St-Laurent in the sb, with the big stack. He made the call – and then called again when Patrick St-Laurent over-shoved from the bb.

Mitcheal: 4 of Spades 4 of Hearts
Patrick Rabouin: 9 of Hearts 8 of Spades
Patrick: Ace of Spades Jack of Clubs

The board runout started will for one Patrick but ended well for the other: 3 of Clubs 5 of Clubs 8 of Clubs Ace of Diamonds 9 of Clubs – the flush with the Jack of Clubs took the pot.

Update: As we were writing this hand, Colin Scheckman was eliminated in 4th place.

Following the recent break, all 6 players asked tournament staff to take full chip counts and present the numbers that would be paid according to an ICM chop. When the numbers were calculated and presented the players agreed to continue playing for $1,503 and distribute the rest of the prize pool according to the ICM chop figures. These will be the prizes published in the final results for the final 6 players.

Since the deal was made, the player with the smallest stack, Stephanie Cormier, has been eliminated in 6th place, leaving 5 players still at the table.

    6th place: Stephanie Cormier, $9,575

There are 6 players remaining in the Playground 200 and after the most recent flurry of activity, the tourney has gone back to its relatively slow pace – but blinds are continuing to rise, and some players are finding themselves short-stacked… it’s a recipe for action.

During the recent break we managed to get updated chip counts for all 6 players remaining. As the break comes to a close, the remaining players have asked the tournament staff to present them with ICM chop numbers based on current stack sizes. We’ll have more info when it becomes available.

Action has really heated up on the final table following the recent elimination of Gabriel Lessard – just a few minutes later, Rejean Grenier has also found the end.

Tommy Dion raised to 200K on the button, and when Rejean shoved over the top from the sb – a move he had been pulling for a few orbits – Tommy was prepared and made the call despite being quite light in his own holdings.

Tommy: King of Diamonds 5 of Clubs
Rejean: Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds

Rejean was stronger than perhaps Tommy had bargained for, and the 5 of Spades Ace of Diamonds 10 of Hearts flop, Rejean kept a solid lead. The 7 of Clubs changed nothing… but the King of Spades on the river changed everything, giving Tommy two pair and all of Rejean’s chips

Play on the final table has proceeded at a very deliberate pace so far, with no eliminations for almost a full level of play. The only constant has been that Patrick Rabouin-St-Laurent has kept stacking chips – from the beginning of level 28 until the recent all-in, he had added over a million chips to his already dominant stack.

Finally there was a hand that played out to the end, and unfortunately for Gabriel Lessard, it was his final hand in the tournament. We didn’t catch all of the action, but after a hand that featured three rounds of betting and must have seemed like a call to a chop, he was eliminated from the tournament.

The board read 9 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 5 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 3 of Diamonds and Gabriel was playing Ace of Spades 6 of Diamonds – but Patrick was playing Ace of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds for the rivered flush.

Patrick already had a sizeable lead on the rest of the table – these chips will just increase his advantage.

Mitcheal Ferguson just eliminated Antoine Sankari at the final table. In the end the hand came down to pocket pairs, with Mitcheal’s Queen of Spades Queen of Diamonds besting Antoine’s 9 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts. The board was dealt 2 of Spades 10 of Hearts 4 of Hearts King of Spades 8 of Spades.

Antoine finishes in 9th, collecting a prize of $2,500. Congratulations goes out to him. Good tournament, and good luck to the rest at the final table.
