Antoine Simon is the Champion of Event #7

    2018/12/18 - 4:16 by

By the time heads up play arrived, both players were quite fatigued and with the deal in place, there was some fight between the two players – Christopher Turnbull and Antoine Simon – but both were equally easygoing about the whole affair. The mood was light, the players were happy, there was a nice small rail consisting of Sergei Gurin, and the stage was set for the final stretch of this terrific event.

Chris scored an early double to take the chip lead, but before long Antoine had doubled back and enjoyed a big lead once again. Eventually, with fatigue getting the best of the players, Antoine limped his button holding Ace of Clubs 7 of Hearts and Chris decided to shove over the top holding 10 of Spades 8 of Clubs. Antoine called.

The window card told most of the tale on the flop: Ace of Spades Jack of Diamonds 7 of Hearts. The 10 of Diamonds on the turn gave Chris a few more outs, but the 6 of Diamonds on the river gave Antoine the win!

    Congratulations!

Event #7 Champion: Antoine Simon, $3,440

    2nd place: Christopher Turnbull, $3,000

Deal reached with 3 remaining; English out 3rd

    2018/12/18 - 3:58 by

The players were able to reach a deal with 3 players remaining – they chose to simply chop the remaining pot for $3,000 each, leaving $440 up top for the eventual winner. All three players were instantly amenable to the plan and cards were quickly back in the air. Not more than 2 hands after the deal was made, Jonathan English was all-in from the button and this time it was Antoine Simon who made the call.

Jonathan: Queen of Hearts 6 of Hearts
Antoine: 4 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds

The flop favoured Antoine: 8 of Spades 3 of Spades 4 of Clubs and the turn 10 of Diamonds did nothing for Jonathan. The 2 of Diamonds was also a brick and Antoine had made the only pair to win the hand.

    3rd place: Jonathan English, $3,000

    4th place: Jean Sebastien Penven

    2018/12/18 - 3:52 by

Jean Sebastien Penven has finished in 4th place in Event #7. Play at the final table had been relatively brisk, but stacks were getting shallow relative to the blinds and much of the action was occurring via preflop shoves followed by fold/call decisions from the blinds. In this hand, Jean Sebastien shoved from the button and was called by Christopher Turnbull in the bb.

Jean Sebastien: King of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds
Chris: Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades

The board ran out safe for Ace-high – 9 of Spades 5 of Spades 3 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 3 of Spades and Chris stacked the chips.

4th place: Jean Sebastien Penven, $1,720

    Bourque eliminated in 7th place

Remi Bourque was leading for long stretches of play today, but by the time the final table came along, he had just an average stack and was looking for spots to get it in. He found one in the sb. Christopher Turnbull raised to 75K preflop from the cutoff and Remi raised to 250K from the sb. Christopher followed this up with a shove, which Remi promptly called with about 300K behind.

Remi: 10 of Hearts 10 of Spades
Chris: Ace of Hearts Jack of Clubs

It was a classic race that Remi was actually winning on the flop: 4 of Spades 5 of Hearts King of Clubs – still good – and then the 3 of Spades on the turn. Unfortunately (for Remi), the Ace of Clubs came on the river and that spelled the end of his night.

In play immediately following, Jean François Langevin was also eliminated, and just 2 orbits later, so was Anderson F. There are now just 4 players left.

Nicholas Soller has been eliminated in 8th place, leaving just 7 players in Event #7 – the final table.

Play resumed for 2 or 3 hands before the players requested to check relative stack sizes to consider a possible ICM chop. Tournament staff is now confirming all counts.

After more than a level of play stuck at 11 players remaining, Daniel Soussan has been eliminated. During the long passage of play, many chip stacks were equalized and some of the shorter stacks moved nearer to the average as there were quite a few doubles during this period.

Jean-François Langevin has been one of the shorter stacks for some time, and has open shoved in position at least 3-4 times on his button, and this time he found a call from Daniel, directly to the left of Jean-François.

Jean-François: Queen of Diamonds 10 of Hearts
Daniel: Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs

The flop was safe for the Ace-high, but the turn 10 of Spades was the very definition of unsafe – and there was no relief on the fiver 6 of Diamonds. When the dealer counted down the stacks, it became apparent that Daniel was covered and he hit the rail in 11th place.

Next to go were Dominic Coulibaly in 10th place, and Domenico Agatiello in 9th – and it seems like the dam may have burst.

The players are on a break and as they went to the pause, a player was eliminated taking the tournament down to 12 players remaining – a table is thus scheduled to be broken before play resumes at the end of this break.

With just 2 tables remaining, some huge stacks have begun to appear, but none as huge as that of Remi Bourque, who is currently playing 681,000 in chips – almost 20% of the total chips in play in that single player’s stack!

Passing the bubble doesn’t provoke the same stampede to the cage as it might in a bigger-field tournament, but nevertheless action has been quick and definitive now that the money has been reached, and in just a few minutes, 7 more players have been eliminated, a table has been closed, and two tables have had players moved to keep things balanced. Right now, a second table is being closed and play will continue on 3 tables.

There’s still a long way to go in the event tonight – but the players haven’t significantly tightened up, at least not in such a way that the structure could be threatened or anything like that.

Hadi Ghattas was down to 43K when he open shoved from the button, and Anthony-Paul Belle-Isle quickly made the call and confidently showed down his Ace of Hearts Ace of Spades, way ahead of Hadi’s 9 of Hearts 9 of Spades – he even had the suits covered.

The flop was inconsequential – 2 of Spades 8 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds – but the turn 9 of Diamonds was just what Hadi was looking for and the 5 of Spades river did no harm – he had his double up for this critical period of play.

This hand was one of several short-stack doubles (or triples) as the bubble loomed, but the logjam broke just a couple of minutes later as Frederic Robert became the unlucky bubble player to go out in 26th. The remaining 25 players are all in the money.
