Chip chop in the 5-Year Extravaganza

Chip chop in the 5-Year Extravaganza

After Samuel Pouliot was eliminated, the players declined to re-run numbers for a deal, even though he had been the only one to say no during the previous negotiation, and play continued for about half a level. After a while, though, the players mutually agreed to re-count the stacks and consider another deal based on current stack sizes.

On request, tournament staff brought back proposed payouts for each player, but two players had issues with these – including one of the most (if not THE most) experienced player in the field, Patrick St-Onge. There was some discussion from all sides – all of it very civil, of course – and while this was going on, Cynthia Paquette was furiously writing down a different proposal on a tattered printout of the prize pool.

And from the jaws of defeat – it seemed plain there were be no deal – Cynthia proposed the following: $7,000 for the three shorter stacks, $12,000 for the two big stacks, and $9,600 for the in-between player…

…and they had a deal that everyone was happy with.

The 5-Year Extravaganza Champions are: Patrick St-Onge ($7,000), Kathy Sawers ($7,000), Jeremy Chandler ($12,000), Steve Winters ($9,600), Richard Lord ($12,013), and Cynthia Paquette ($7,000).

    Pouliot out in 7th

In the first hand following his refusal of the chip-chop deal proposed by the players, short-stacked Samuel Pouliot open-shoved from the cutoff for just over 1,300,000, and found a quick call from Jeremy Chandler in the small blind.

Samuel: Ace of Spades 9 of Spades
Jeremy: 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs

Board: 2 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts 5 of Hearts Queen of Hearts

Jeremy’s pair of tens held on for the win, and with that pot he took over the chip lead of this final table, increasing his stack to around 6,500,000.

    7th place: Samuel Pouliot – $2,600.00

    Menard takes 8th place

    Benjamin Menard’s exit was a two-part process.

In the first hand, he opened to 300,000 from utg, and then called the all-in of Steve Winters worth 2,360,000 total. Benjamin turned over Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds, but couldn’t overcome the Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds of Steve, who turned a set to lock in the hand.

On the very next hand, he 3-bet all-in for his last 550,000 facing an early-position open from Richard Lord. He tabled King of Hearts Queen of Hearts, but once again his overcards could not over come the underpair, as Richard’s 6 of Diamonds 6 of Hearts held on the 5 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds 10 of Spades 9 of Diamonds 3 of Clubs board.

Players are now on a short break.

    Kazarian exits 9th

The next player to be eliminated in the 5-Year Extravaganza is George Kazarian. He opened all-in from the button and after a short consideration of the situation, Patrick St-Onge called. Kathy Sawers (bb) folded and the cards were turned on their backs.

George: Ace of Spades 6 of Diamonds
Patrick: Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs

Things looked up for George for a split second when the window card became visible: 6 of Spades. But when the other two cards were fanned out, the situation was not nearly as sunny: 8 of Hearts 8 of Spades (to ooohs and aaahs from the table and spectators). The 6 of Hearts on the turn got a reaction as well, though it was more aesthetically pleasing than hopeful for George – he gained a single out. It was for nought as the Queen of Spades came on the river and George hit the rail.

    9th place: George Kazarian, $1,600

    Rejean Labbe out in 10th

Rejean Labbe started the final table with just 550K in chips and this was the 2nd time in 6 hands that he opened all-in – this time holding Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs. Samuel Pouliot decided to call, but his Jack of Clubs Queen of Diamonds was a definite underdog.

Samuel connected on the flop of 5 of Hearts 7 of Spades Queen of Clubs and although the 10 of Hearts added some outs for Rejean, his hopes were dashed on the 9 of Spades river and he was off to the Tournament Desk to pick up his payout coupon.

    Srinivasan out 11th

Jay Srinivasan started the day with just 850K and was never really able to chip up significantly, though he won a few pots when required to keep his head above water and ladder up one payout level. In the end, he open shoved with 5 of Spades 5 of Diamonds and Steve Winters made the call with Queen of Clubs Queen of Hearts.

There was no help for the smaller pair as the board ran out 3 of Spades 8 of Spades Ace of Hearts 2 of Clubs King of Spades and Jay was eliminated. With Jay’s elimination, the final table was established as well – we’ll have a full rundown of the new seating arrangement with approximate stack sizes in a few minutes.

    Sebastien St-Onge finishes 12th

After calling a utg open from Samuel Pouliot, Sebastien St-Onge led out for 325,000 on a flop showing King of Spades Queen of Clubs 8 of Clubs. Samuel decided to put maximum pressure on his opponent by moving all-in over the top, but he found a call from Sebastien.

Samuel: Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds
Sebastien: King of Spades 10 of Clubs

Although Sebastien got it in with the best hand on the flop, the Queen of Hearts on the turn changed everything. The river was an 8 of Clubs, and just like that Sebastien’s deep run was cut in 12th place.

We are now just one spot away from our final table of 10-players.

    12th place: Sebatien St-Onge – $1,200.00

    Jason Dupont next out

In another relatively straightforward hand, Jason Dupont has been eliminated, losing his all-in hand to Kathy Sawers. Jason was playing a 450K stack on the button and action folded to him and he shoved for his tournament life. Kathy didn’t have to think for long: call.

Jason: 8 of Hearts 9 of Hearts
Kathy: Ace of Clubs Jack of Spades

The flop was pretty amazing for Jason: 10 of Hearts 7 of Clubs 4 of Hearts – giving him the flush draw as well as the two-way straight draw. The flop put him way ahead in terms of probabilities – but Kathy was still winning with Ace-high. Kathy got much stronger through the Ace of Spades on the turn, which took all of Jason’s pair draws off the table, and the 5 of Clubs was a brick for Jason, who was eliminated in 13th place.

    13th place: Jason Dupont, $1000
