Robert Aho takes down the $200 + $20 Deepstack

Robert Aho takes down the $200 + $20 Deepstack

Robert Aho navigated through a field of 128 players to arrive at the elusive final table as the chip leader. He then managed to maintain this lead throughout the duration of the final table, before finally finding himself heads-up versus Mathieu Fonderflick. After only a few hands of play, Mathieu’s 5 big blind shove was called by Robert, and it was virtually a flip.

Mathieu tabled Ace of Spades 6 of Spades, and was up against the 9 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds of Robert. He was poised to double up, until Robert spiked a pair on the river to take down the pot, and the tournament. Mathieu’s second place finish earned him a cool $4,450 in cash, while Robert’s victory was worth a sweet $5,900!

Congratulations!

$200 + $20 Deepstack Champion: Robert Aho – $5,900.00

    4th place: Charles-Eric Benoit

Charles-Eric Benoit came into this final table as the short stack, but it didn’t take long for him to run up his stack and climb the leaderboard. He maintained a healthy stack until play fell 4-handed, at which point the increasing blinds started taking a toll. He lost a flip with a pocket pair of 6s versus the KT of Mathieu Fonderflick, where he saw a considerable portion of his stack get shipped across the table.

With little room left to manoeuvre, he finally moved in with A4, but fell to the pocket pair of tens of chipleader Robert Aho, ending his run in 4th place.

    5th place: Mathieu Gariepy

Robert Aho limped in from the button, and was followed by Mathieu Fonderflick from the small blind. Mathieu Gariepy checked his option, and they were three-way to the flop.

With the flop showing 10 of Diamonds Jack of Spades 7 of Clubs, the two Mathieu’s checked over to Robert, who fired 50,000. Fonderflick folded, and Gariepy raised to 150,000. After a moment in the tank, Robert announced an all-in, which was snap-called by Gariepy.

Gariepy: 7 of Spades 10 of Clubs
Robert: Jack of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Robert made a straight on the turn, as the running cards brought the 8 of Hearts and the 8 of Spades, and he eliminated Gariepy in the process.

Haralambos Margaritis was attempting to steal the pot away from Robert Aho, as he moved all-in for 168,000 on the turn with the board showing Ace of Hearts 6 of Clubs 10 of Clubs 4 of Spades, following a bet of 40,000 from Robert. Robert tanked for a few moments, and eventually made the call, showing only 3rd pair. Haralambos knocked the table, announcing “good call”, before tabling his hand.

Haralambos: King of Spades 3 of Clubs
Robert: 6 of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds

Robert only had a few outs to dodge on the river, and when dealer dropped the Ace of Clubs, the two players shook hands and Haralambos took a walk to the cashiers to collect his cash prize.

    7th place: Patrick Girard

After losing a decent chunk of his stack a few hand earlier to table-opponent Mathieu Fonderflick, Patrick Girard was left with less than 4 big blinds to his name. He moved in from early position, and found isolation from Robert Aho on the button.

Mathieu: Jack of Hearts 10 of Spades
Robert: Ace of Clubs Queen of Spades

Robert turned the nut flush on a board showing Jack of Clubs 7 of Clubs Queen of Clubs King of Clubs 6 of Diamonds, and Patrick ended his deep run in 7th place.

    8th place: Sylvain Lessard

Haralambos Margaritis raised to 55,000 from the hijack position, and Sylvain Lessard moved all-in for a total of 58,000 from the small blind. Charles-Eric Benoit joined in by calling from the big blind, and Haralambos threw in the missing 3,000 to go 3-handed to the flop.

On a board of 6 of Hearts 8 of Spades 8 of Diamonds, Chales-Eric check-called a bet of 75,000. When the turn brought the Jack of Hearts, Chales-Eric once again check-called, this time for the remainder of his chips.

Charles-Eric: King of Hearts 8 of Hearts
Haralambos: Ace of Hearts 9 of Hearts
Sylvain: 3 of Clubs 3 of Hearts

The dealer dropped the 7 of Diamonds on the river, and with that, Charles-Eric scooped the pot of over 600,000, sending Sylvain to the rail in the process.

    9th place: Samuel Pouliot

In the hand following Andre Frechette’s elimination, we saw yet another all-in / call.

Sylvain Lessard opened the action from late position to 25,000, and action folded around to Samuel Pouliot in the big blind, who moved all-in for his remaining 90,000. Sylvain tanked for a moment, as the call would represent most of his stack, but he inevitably committed the chips to find himself racing against his opponent.

Sylvain: Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs
Samuel: 7 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs

Sylvain caught just enough of the 2 of Spades 5 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds King of Hearts Queen of Spades board to bring this final table down to 8 players.

Players went on a short break following this hand.

    10th place: Andre Frechette

Action has been rather slow on this final table, and it took almost a full level before we saw our first casualty.

Andre Frechette’s stack was down to 99,000 when he moved in from middle position in an unopened pot. He found a snap call from Mathieu Gariepy, and the two found themselves heads-up with cards on their backs.

Andre: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
Mathieu: Ace of Clubs King of Hearts

Board: 9 of Clubs 7 of Clubs 7 of Hearts 2 of Hearts Ace of Spades
