Quickly to a conclusion!

Quickly to a conclusion!

Once Owen Snow was eliminated, the Win the Button tournament sped up to a blistering pace with 4 players remaining. First to go out was Sebastian Pasternak, who was eliminated in 4th place.

Once Sebastian was out, the remaining 3 players decided to make a deal for the remaining prize pool. The initial agreement between them was to award both 3rd and 2nd place $900 each, leaving $1,177 for the player who would eventually finish in first place. This deal was arrived at very quickly – 3rd place money on the payout chart was just $690 – and just as quickly, Alissa Ann Allen was headed to the Tournament Desk to collect her payout coupon.

When heads-up play began, the two remaining players, Jean Philippe Pepin and Giovanni Petrella, decided to further modify the remaining prize pool, settling on $977 for 2nd and $1,100 for first. But after just a few minutes of heads up play, the two players chose to divide the remaining prize money evenly between them ($1,039 each) and the tournament was over.

Note that in many of our festivals and series, players are obligated to play to a winner in every event, including reserving a portion of the prize pool for the player in 1st place. This is NOT the case in these Playground Anniversary Series tournaments – players are free to divide up the prize pool any way they please (and that everyone playing agrees to), up to and including chopping the prizes and stopping play immediately.

After a relatively long period of chips mostly shifting from player to player – particularly considering the stack sizes in play relative to the blinds – Owen Snow found himself down to 75K and decided to open shove – blind. Alissa Ann Allen folded but Giovanni Petrella made the call. Jean Philippe Pepin strongly considered calling as well, but chose to fold.

Owen: 2 of Hearts 3 of Clubs
Giovanni: Ace of Spades 9 of Clubs

There was a pair for Giovanni on the flop of 6 of Spades 9 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs meaning Owen would need running cards to come out on top – but when the King of Clubs was dealt on the turn the hand was effectively over. The river was a meaningless 7 of Hearts.

    5th place: Owen Snow, $340

Since the break, Mathieu Desrochers had played his bb and sb without picking up any chips so he was short – around 50K. Giovanni Petrella opened to 53K and Mathieu shoved. Everyone else folded until it was back to Giovanni, who made the easy call.

Giovanni: Ace of Clubs King of Diamonds
Mathieu: King of Hearts Queen of Hearts

The community cards came out Jack of Spades 6 of Spades 8 of Clubs 6 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds which didn’t even give Giovanni much of a sweat even though he won the hand with no pair.

When the final table came together there were several players with relatively small stacks and 1 monster stack in the tournament. This has created a dynamic that makes it pretty tough for the small or the average stacks to chip up.

The first two players eliminated with Nassim Kabbala in 10th and Jason Conforti in 9th. Once they were gone and the tournament hit the hard money bubble, the players quickly agreed to re-distribute the 2nd and 3rd place prizes to add an 8th prize – a classic bubble save. This had the side benefit of keeping the tournament moving at a relatively lively pace, and 2 more players were eliminated in short order. Alex Beaupré took 8th place ($100) and Chirag Patel in 7th place ($170).

All the while, Alissa Ann Allen is sitting in seat 10 with a monster stack – she’s playing with well over 450K in chips – just a little under half the chips in play. The player on her left – Giovanni Petrella – is also playing with a lot of chips – over 250K in his case – so between the two of them they account for over 60% of the chips in play. We’ll see what impact that has on how the game proceeds.

    Leaderboard – 2nd break

The players in the Win the Button event have just taken their second break of the day and while tournament staff was removing the green T25 chips from play, we were able to put together an up-to-date leaderboard going into level 10.

There are just 4 players who have managed to build up dominant stacks (listed below), and even though the tournament is moving along very quickly – there are just 23 players remaining – it looks like there are several others who are right on the edge in terms of stack size.

The players in the Win the Button event have just returned from their first break of the day and play has resumed in level 5 of the tournament. From here on out it will be a freezeout event, as late registration and re-entry have both closed.

In total, the event attracted 60 entries plus 14 re-entries, meaning that the final prize pool is just over $4,300 – a good figure for a small buy-in weekday afternoon tourney! We’ll have exact prize pool and payout figures to publish in just a few minutes.
