31 remain going in to Day 3 of The Wild $150

Another day of poker has come and gone here at Canada’s premier poker destination, and we now have our line-up ready for the last chapter of this opening event of the Playground Poker Fall Classic.

The Wild $150, which has become the traditional kickoff event for our series here at Playground, attracted a total of 1,439 entries through four starting flights. 339 made it through to Day 2, of which 135 secured a cash prize, however only 31 remain and will return for Day 3 and the conclusion of Event 1.

Play restarts at 7pm sharp tomorrow, Thursday November 5th, and we won’t stop until an Event 1 Champion has been crowned! Tuned in here to our blog to follow live updates, view photos, and rail the remaining players as they duke it out on the felts, all trying to earn that sweet $34,000 first place prize.

Anesti Kocini is the current chip leader, as he bagged 2,560,000 at the end of the night. He stayed under the radar for the first part of Day 2, but then exploded near the end of the night to take over the lead, knocking out former chip leader Mathieu Boulanger-Vaugeois in the process, and then rivering Charles-Eric Benoit for a 1,500,000 pot in the last hands of the night. He now holds more than an 800,000 chip lead on his opponents going into Day 3.

However with the average stack at almost 20 big blinds, there is still a lot of poker to be played before anything is set in stone…

    See you tomorrow!

Day 2 is coming to a close, as only 2 more 30-minutes levels remain before the surviving players bag their chips onto Day 3.

As play enters level 25, it is local hero Anesti Kocini who is in the chip lead, however his 1,450,000 in chips is closely followed by a handful of players.

    9 tables remain

The Wild $150 is down to the final 9 tables of the tournament, as only 79 players remain. Level 23 is underway, which means we have a little under 4 full levels left of play.

Day 3 will begin at 7pm tomorrow night – November 5th – and will play down until there is only one player left, our Event 1 Champion!

Normandin making a run at it

Level 22 has proven to be very good for Jeremy Normandin, who increased his 556,000 stack up to 980,000, and brought him just shy of the chip lead.

In a recent hand, Jeremy opened to 42,000 from utg+1, and called off two short stack all-ins with his Ace of Hearts King of Spades. His opponents tabled Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds and Jack of Diamonds Jack of Spades, but they stood no chance once the dealer rung out a board of King of Clubs Ace of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds, and they both got sent to the cashier’s to collect their cash prize.

The players just came off a short break, and during this time we made an update to the leaderboard. Two players have already breached the 7-figures mark, as both Karyn Gemmil and Chico are a hair above the 1-million in chips. Others are quickly catching up, and we should see a few more join the millionaires club before long.

With 137 players left the TD announced to the players that the dealers were to pause after the current hand was finished because the tournament was going hand for hand. Despite this fact, two players busted in the hands already in progress and just like that the money bubble has burst.

There are quite a few short stacks who are relieved there will be no protracted period of hand for hand play – these players are now lined up at the tournament desk to receive min-cash payout coupons!

Congratulations to everyone in the money… and play continues in level 20.

There are 141 players left in Event 1, which means that just 5 more players must be eliminated before the players are in the money! Typically the action slows down at the bubble – but in most cases in a multi-day, large field event the buy-in is also much greater. Experience with this particular $150 buy-in event suggests that play will continue at a relatively brisk clip up to and right through the bubble.

The next few minutes will tell the tale!

    Matt Damon leads Day 2

Mathieu Boulanger-Vaugeois, who goes by the alias “Matt Damon” here at Playground Poker Club, is currently leading Day 2 of The Wild $150, as play enters level 19. His 671,000 stack dwarfs the rest of the field, as he holds nearly 200,000 more than second in chips.

Play in Event 1 is still 37 places from the bubble as play continues in level 18 of the tournament. That’s not to say the pace has been slow, however, the tournament is still very deep overall and the steady pace of eliminations suggest that the bubble will arrive within the next couple of levels.

Some of the recent eliminations: Duy Toan Pham, Isham Yamani, Roman Ouvarov, Rodney Ramalho, Vanessa Kade, and Bill Kontaratos.

After losing practically his whole stack to Mathieu Boulanger-Vaugeois he managed to hang in there and even chipped back up to around 140K… only to be eliminated shortly after. That table – which featured some crazy action to start the day – has now broken.

    Vanessa Kade’s bad luck hand:

And bust. Shove the flop on top pair, called by middle pair + gutshot. Hits second pair…. GG. @PlaygroundPoker @WPT

Mathieu Boulanger-Vaugeois and Duy Toan Pham were the two chip leaders entering Day 2, and interestingly enough the random seating draw placed them on the same starting table. After a few levels of play, they found themselves playing for stacks preflop.

The action started with a raise to 10,000 by Mathieu, from utg+1, which was called by the button, and then 3bet by Pham in the big bind, who made it 44,000 to go. Mathieu replied with a 4bet to 96,000, leading the button player to fold. Pham quickly came over the top with an all-in, which was snap-called by Mathieu.

Mathieu: King of Diamonds King of Clubs
Pham: Jack of Hearts Jack of Clubs

Board: 6 of Hearts Ace of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds

The kings held for Mathieu, who doubled up his 353,000 stack and propelled him into the overwhelming chip lead, crippling Pham along the way.
