Event 5 Champion: Tony Vi Thanh To

Event 5 Champion: Tony Vi Thanh To

After a short “negotiation” which resulted not in a deal, exactly, just a slight re-definition of the prizes for first and second place, heads up action got underway with Fabio Luongo enjoying about a 2:1 chip lead over Tony “Gameboy” To.

They played a few hands, each of them seemingly probing for weaknesses. Slowly but surely, Gameboy started to rebuild his stack and catch up to Fabio. Then, on the river of a seemingly inconsequential hand, with the board reading 3 of Hearts 7 of Clubs 2 of Hearts 6 of Clubs King of Hearts, Gameboy decided to bet 250K after the flop and turn both being checked around. Not convinced by the apparent steal attempt, Fabio tried to use his stack to do the job: all-in.

Gameboy snap called, leapt out of his chair and tabled the 7 of Hearts 4 of Hearts for a flush. Fabio was caught in a bluff and shipped a huge pot to Gameboy. Now it was 2:1 in the other direction.

It was just a few hands later that Gameboy limped his small blind/button only to find a raise from Fabio. Gameboy called and the flop was delivered: 7 of Spades 2 of Spades 10 of Hearts. Fabio had flopped a huge draw and bet – he was all-in. Gameboy instantly called and flipped over King of Diamonds King of Clubs for a monster pocket pair. Fabio had plenty of outs, though, but Gameboy faded the spades as the turn and river came out 6 of Hearts and Jack of Clubs and Gameboy was the Champion of Event 5!

    3-Way? Not for long…

The players remaining seemed to be settling in for a decent 3-handed session, but it didn’t happen as just 5 or 6 hands in Fabio Luongo found himself facing an all-in bet of less than 600K holding the nut flush draw and and what he was pretty sure was an over card with 2 cards to come. Fabio called.

Fabio: Ace of Spades 6 of Spades
Alain: Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts

The flop that brought on the all-in and the call was Queen of Spades 2 of Spades 3 of Diamonds and then once the chips were in the middle the 7 of Clubs was a blank but the 8 of Spades was just what Fabio hoped for.

Play is now heads up for the Championship.

    Two quick eliminations

There were two very short-stacked players coming back from the break and they have both been eliminated in the first 10 minutes of level 25.

First to go was Jonathan Schaler, who resumed play after the break with just 315,000 chips. He was eliminated by Fabio Luongo, whose King of Clubs 4 of Clubs outflopped Jonathan’s Ace of Spades Queen of Clubs when the community cards came Queen of Clubs Jack of Clubs 8 of Clubs King of Spades 6 of Spades.

Next to go was Alexander James Allison – known to his friends simply as “Cheese” who open shoved on the button with Jack of Hearts 8 of Diamonds and quickly learned that Alain Chauvette was sitting in the bb with Queen of Hearts Queen of Clubs. There weren’t a lot of ways the board could be dealt that would even give Alain a sweat, but the 4 of Diamonds 6 of Hearts 3 of Clubs in addition to the turn 5 of Clubs brought some chop possibilities as well as a gunshot for Alexander – but the 4 of Clubs removed all doubt and Alexander was sent to the Tournament Desk to get his payout coupon.

    Popatia next to go

    2015/11/11 - 19:40 by

The hand happened just a few seconds after Luongo’s big win and happened so fast that we missed the action but Azim “Sammy” Popatia has been eliminated in 6th place after losing his stack to Vi Thanh Tony To aka “Gameboy”. This vaulted “Gameboy” into the chip lead over Luongo and Sammy added a 6th place finish to his 4th place finish in a similar event here at Playground a few months ago.

Players are now on a 15 minute break as tournament staff removes the yellow T1000 chips from play.

    Luongo takes over the lead

Robert Taylor had just re-built his stack to where he needed it to be to continue playing his active game, but unfortunately for Robert, it ended up just being more chips for Fabio Luongo to take off him in a hand they just played.

When we got to the table there was an all-in from Fabio and Robert had called – and the cards were tabled:

Fabio: Ace of Spades Ace of Spades
Robert: Ace of Hearts King of Hearts

Fabio’s Aces were good on a board that ran out 8 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 3 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds.

Robert Taylor is a veteran of big event final tables here at Playground Poker Club (well, he’s played at least one in the past) and he was fortunate to double up and stay in the tournament. He open shoved his Ace of Clubs 2 of Clubs only to find a quick call from Alain Chauvette, the current chip leader – he held Ace of Spades 9 of Hearts and looked poised for another take-out.

It was not to be, however, as Robert got a lot of the way there on the 6 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts 3 of Hearts flop and then make his straight on the 5 of Spades turn.

Robert is back up to the mid-600-thousands while Alain is still among the chip leaders – he was that far ahead.

    Tran eliminated in 8th

Mau Le Ho Tran and Sammy Popatia just waged a preflop raising war that saw Tran get it in with the best – but nevertheless ended up out of the tournament in 8th place.

Sammy opened the action to 42K utg and it folded around to Tran in the bb who raised to 120K. Sammy then re-raised all-in and found a call from Tran.

Sammy: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds
Tran: Queen of Spades Queen of Clubs

Right away the writing was on the wall for Tran on the flop of 5 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds King of Spades, although Sammy still had to get all the way there – 2/3s wasn’t enough. The 4 of Diamonds on the turn was enough, and the 8 of Diamonds on the river just twisted the blade a little.

8th place: Mau Le Ho Tran, $6,590

    Iseman out 9th

Brian Iseman has been eliminated in 9th place in a hand that could have deep repercussions for the whole rest of the tournament.

Alain Chauvette opened the action with a raise to 100K and Brian raised all-in. It folded around and Alain made the call.

Alain: 10 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs
Brian: Jack of Diamonds Jack of Clubs

While the cards were being turned over, Fabio made it known that he had folded Ace-King, which seemed like a shock to some of the other players.

In any case, the community cards were all wrong for Brian – the flop of 4 of Spades 5 of Diamonds 10 of Spades put him deep in a hole to Alain’s suck out and the baby cards on the turn and river weren’t the solution.

Alain added significantly to his stack on the hand, but it remains to be seen if the largest impact of this hand will be that Fabio saved a significant stack and therefore remained among the leaders at the table.

    9th place: Brian R Iseman, $4,930.00
