2015 WPT Montreal Champion: Jared Mahoney

2015/11/20 - 2:54 by

2015 WPT Montreal Champion: Jared Mahoney

Jared Mahoney has won the 2015 Partypoker.net WPT Montreal!

After an epic 6-handed Final Table that continued for almost 200 hands of poker – a good many of these part of a huge 3-way battle followed by a tense heads-up battle with Darryll Fish that saw very little between the two players – Jared emerged victorious. For his victory, Jared has won $433,410.00, the Playground Poker Club Champion’s Belt, his name etched permanently on the WPT Champion’s trophy, an entry in the World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions, and last (but most definitely not least) a beautiful Hublot Oceanographic watch!

An experienced player both online and live, Jared had never cashed for more than $32K in a live poker tournament. He has (published) cashes dating back to 2007, however, and a solid online resume to boot. This victory was clearly a long time coming for a talented player who took care of business in a solid, matter-of-fact fashion on the final table, weathering bad beats and huge pots with equal aplomb.

The final hand seemed to come out of nowhere. Jared and opponent Darryll Fish had already played 33 hands heads-up and even just 4-5 hands before the last one there were no more than 4 antes between their respective stacks! The final hand began with a raise from Jared to 1M chips. Darryll’s response was quick: all-in – and Jarred called just as quickly.

Darryll: Ace of Clubs 2 of Diamonds
Jared: Ace of Spades King of Clubs

Jared was well ahead and dominating Darryll, and the flop of 7 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 8 of Diamonds meant that only a deuce or running diamonds could save Darryll. The 6 of Clubs on the turn took away Darryll’s back door draws and the 5 of Clubs on the river gave Jared his largest victory to date.

For his part, Darryll takes home $304,343.00 for second place, which is also his largest single live tournament cash to date!

Congratulations to both players!

Heads-Up: Darryll Fish vs Jared Mahoney

The WPT Montreal is now heads-up after 35 levels of play over the course of 5 days, and playing for the WPT Title are Darryll Fish and Jared Mahoney.

Jared begins heads-up play with the chip advantage, but his 11,150,000 in chips only slightly surpasses the 9,700,000 stack of Darryll. The money, the WPT Montreal Champion’s Belt, the Hublot watch and the WPT Champion’s Trophy are on the table and all at stake!

    Good luck!

The Second Chance Champion: Benny Chen

The Second Chance Champion: Benny Chen

The Second Chance of The Playground Poker Fall Classic attracted 136 players, of which 22 survived Day 1 to return today for the conclusion.

When play fell down to 4 players, they decided to make an ICM chop based on their chip counts, leaving $4,000 extra for the eventual winner, as well as a Playground Poker Fall Classic Champion’s Trophy. Play quickly fell heads-up after a deal was made, as Benny Chen knocked out Behram Antia, while crippling Noy in the same hand.

After only a few hands of heads-up play between Jason Mandanici-Turcot and Benny Chen, Jason found his chips all-in on the flop after a check-raise from Benny. Jason had an over-pair to the board, but it was no match against the flopped straight of Benny, who held on to win Event 14!

With the extra $4,000 for the win, Benny Chen finished by pocketing $34,223, while Jason’s conciliation prize was of $27,695.

    Congratulations!

Play has halted on Day 4 of this year’s Partypoker.net WPT Montreal as the tournament is down to 6 players. For a Televised WPT event, this means one thing: the official final table! The 6 players left in the action are slated to return tomorrow afternoon, at which time they will resume the tournament where they left off today. That means they will be in the same seats as today, with the same stacks (same exact chips, in fact) – but on a TV soundstage being built inside the Playground Tournament Hall today and overnight!

Action will get underway at 4pm tomorrow and there will be a live stream – we’ll post more information about that tomorrow.

    Event 12 Champion: Samuel Barre

    2015/11/18 - 1:57 by Playground Poker

    Event 12 Champion: Samuel Barre

Samuel Barre arrived at Playground Poker Club this morning with the intention of continuing his deep run in the WPT Montreal, as he was one of the 63 players remaining at the start of Day 3. Lady Luck seemed to have a different plan for him however, as he was eliminated in 52nd place after losing a large portion of his chips in what could only be described as a cooler (QQ < AA).

As he was in line at the cashier to collect his almost $10,000 prize from the Main Event, he realized he could still late register for this Event 12. He decided to jump in, and as it turns out, it was a very profitable decision! He built his stack rather early, and remained amongst the chip leaders throughout the tournament, arriving at the final table with nearly double second place in chips.

When play fell 6-handed, the players decided to negotiate a deal. As he was the chip leader at the time, he took the biggest share, pocketing $24,000 in the deal, while an additional $2,950 was left for the eventual winner, along with a Playground Poker Fall Classic Champion’s Trophy.

Play opened up considerably once the deal was struck, and it wasn’t long before he found himself heads-up with a 4-to-1 chip lead over opponent Zheng-Yi Xie. They only played for several orbits before Samuel called the preflop 3bet all-in of Zheng-Yi, and held on to become our Event 12 Champion!

Zheng-Yi, who was on the shorter end of the spectrum when the deal was made, collected $13,630 for his run.

    Congratulations!

    Event: Event 12 - $1000 + $100 NL Hold'em Freeze

    November 17th: the one-day 1K!

    2015/11/16 - 23:00 by

Tuesday morning at 11am will see the debut of a totally new tournament in a Playground Poker Classic festival – it’s a relatively large buy-in event ($1,000 + $100), but on a compact, one-day schedule.

The small buy-in, multi-day tournaments like The Wild $150 and The $250 Frenzy are a great way for recreational players to have the entire experience of a big poker event but for an accessible buy-in – and they’ll be a key part of festivals at Playground for a long time to come.

In a long festival like the Fall Classic, though, it’s important to concentrate on the whole player population, a good portion of whom make their living playing this amazing game. For these players, we have heard the request loud and clear – more compact formats are always welcome.

In fact it’s becoming a bit of a trend in the game in the last year or so – to put together tournaments that are big enough to have amazing prize pools but take a lot less time than a full-blown Main Event to play through to a winner. We see this trend with the super high-rollers, which are often 3- or even 2-day events.

So join us tomorrow at 11am for what we’re calling, informally, the “1 Day 1K”. Late registration is open for 6 30-minute levels, and as always late registrants will start with a full T25K stack. You can also download the full tournament rules and structure in PDF format.

    See you at 11!
