2015 WPT Montreal Champion: Jared Mahoney

2015/11/20 - 2:54 by

2015 WPT Montreal Champion: Jared Mahoney

Jared Mahoney has won the 2015 Partypoker.net WPT Montreal!

After an epic 6-handed Final Table that continued for almost 200 hands of poker – a good many of these part of a huge 3-way battle followed by a tense heads-up battle with Darryll Fish that saw very little between the two players – Jared emerged victorious. For his victory, Jared has won $433,410.00, the Playground Poker Club Champion’s Belt, his name etched permanently on the WPT Champion’s trophy, an entry in the World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions, and last (but most definitely not least) a beautiful Hublot Oceanographic watch!

An experienced player both online and live, Jared had never cashed for more than $32K in a live poker tournament. He has (published) cashes dating back to 2007, however, and a solid online resume to boot. This victory was clearly a long time coming for a talented player who took care of business in a solid, matter-of-fact fashion on the final table, weathering bad beats and huge pots with equal aplomb.

The final hand seemed to come out of nowhere. Jared and opponent Darryll Fish had already played 33 hands heads-up and even just 4-5 hands before the last one there were no more than 4 antes between their respective stacks! The final hand began with a raise from Jared to 1M chips. Darryll’s response was quick: all-in – and Jarred called just as quickly.

Darryll: Ace of Clubs 2 of Diamonds
Jared: Ace of Spades King of Clubs

Jared was well ahead and dominating Darryll, and the flop of 7 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 8 of Diamonds meant that only a deuce or running diamonds could save Darryll. The 6 of Clubs on the turn took away Darryll’s back door draws and the 5 of Clubs on the river gave Jared his largest victory to date.

For his part, Darryll takes home $304,343.00 for second place, which is also his largest single live tournament cash to date!

Congratulations to both players!

Heads-Up: Darryll Fish vs Jared Mahoney

The WPT Montreal is now heads-up after 35 levels of play over the course of 5 days, and playing for the WPT Title are Darryll Fish and Jared Mahoney.

Jared begins heads-up play with the chip advantage, but his 11,150,000 in chips only slightly surpasses the 9,700,000 stack of Darryll. The money, the WPT Montreal Champion’s Belt, the Hublot watch and the WPT Champion’s Trophy are on the table and all at stake!

    Good luck!

    Jared Mahoney

    3rd place: Rainer Kempe

    3rd place: Rainer Kempe

In a bit of a surprise after an epic 3-way battle that saw several double-ups and a ton of great poker, Rainer Kempe has been eliminated in 3rd place in the WPT Montreal. Rainer, a Partypoker qualifier, had been the chip leader for long periods of time in the past two levels, but ended up losing some key pots to find himself short-stacked and before long he hit the rail.

There’s just under an hour left before the final table of the WPT Montreal begins on the amazing WPT soundstage that has been built within the Tournament Hall here at Playground Poker Club.

The whole event is being recorded for a later television broadcast, but there will also be a live stream of the whole Final Table. We’ve embedded a link to the broadcast here on this blog, but you can also find the live stream via the World Poker Tour site and from what we can tell there are a few Twitch users/channels that will also embed the stream.

Note that the Live Stream will be presented on a 30-minute delay, but most tweets, blogs, and other information about the event will be published in real time. So keep that in mind if you read or follow other accounts of the Final Table – you may be spoiled!

When the tournament resumes there will be just over 45 minutes left in Level 28, and blinds will be 30,000/60,000 with an ante of 10,000 chips. The chip average is 3.5M and of course 6 players remain.

Play has halted on Day 4 of this year’s Partypoker.net WPT Montreal as the tournament is down to 6 players. For a Televised WPT event, this means one thing: the official final table! The 6 players left in the action are slated to return tomorrow afternoon, at which time they will resume the tournament where they left off today. That means they will be in the same seats as today, with the same stacks (same exact chips, in fact) – but on a TV soundstage being built inside the Playground Tournament Hall today and overnight!

Action will get underway at 4pm tomorrow and there will be a live stream – we’ll post more information about that tomorrow.

    7th place: Chris Arvanitis

Shortly after doubling his stack up through AJ Gambino, Chris Arvanitis got involved in another huge pot as a big favourite.

He opened to 160,000 from the cutoff, and was called by Brian Altman in the big blind. On a flop of Queen of Clubs 4 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds, Brian check-raised Chris’s bet of 250,000 up to 625,000. Chris then quickly responded with an all-in, and Brian made the call.

Chris: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds
Brian: King of Diamonds Queen of Spades

Chris was in a great spot to win the pot of roughly 4-million, and with the 9 of Hearts peeling off on the turn, he had but one more street to fade. Unfortunately for him, the river brought the King of Clubs, eliminating him 7th place, one spot shy of the official final table of the WPT Montreal.

His deep run earned him a payday of $72,510, while the other six players locked in their seat for tomorrow’s final table.

Reiner Kempe placed a min-raise from under the gun, and AJ Gambino flat-called from the button. Chris Arvanitis then (quite messily) 3bet to 330,000 from the small blind, triggering a fold from Reiner. AJ came over the top with a quick all-in, which found an even quicker call.

AJ: Queen of Hearts Queen of Spades
Chris: Ace of Hearts Ace of Clubs

Chris flopped a set to take a stranglehold of the hand, as the board ran out Ace of Spades 10 of Clubs 4 of Hearts 8 of Clubs 10 of Hearts, and doubled his 875,000 stack to nearly 2-million.

Another level has passed us on this final table, and we are still but one elimination away from having our official final table of 6 players in the WPT Montreal. Brian Altman has continued to maintain control of the table, and has chipped up to 7,600,000, but Darryll Fish is slowly creeping up on him, having accumulated 4,580,000 in chips so far.

Following an open to 115,000 from Jared Mahoney, AJ Gambino slid forward his 815,000 stack. Rainer asked for a count, and after a short moment he announced a call. The rest of the players got out of the way, including Jared, and cards were tabled.

AJ: Ace of Spades Queen of Diamonds
Rainer: 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs

Board: 9 of Spades 5 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts Queen of Clubs Jack of Spades

After missing the flop, AJ found some help on the turn to keep this final table 7-handed, as he doubled his stack up to over 1.8 million.

    Action continues….

    Dentale eliminated in 8th

Michael Dentale and Brian Altman just played a hand that, at this phase in a tournament, almost plays itself, although it’s almost a shame considering the skilled choices that both players have made throughout the event so far.

In any case, Brian raised to 110K on the button, and Michael raised all-in from the small blind. The big blind insta-folded… and Brian snap called.

Brian: Ace of Clubs King of Clubs
Michael: Jack of Spades Jack of Diamonds

The flop removed any suspense from the hand: Ace of Hearts 5 of Clubs Queen of Clubs and the Queen of Spades and 6 of Hearts that completed the board did nothing to help Michael.

With one more elimination, the Official WPT Final Table will be established (6 players) and play will be suspended for the day.

    8th place: Michael Dentale, $57,720
