Event 11 Champion: Placide Junior Sanon

2016/11/15 - 5:47 by Playground Poker

Event 11 in the Playground Poker Fall Classic was a $300 + $30 NL Hold’em 8-Max tournament that saw an astounding 259 players show up. A number of local and international pros and recreational players took to the felts in this tournament which, although moderately priced, awarded a cool $16,000 top prize.

There was no lack of action in the early and mid stages of the night, and we saw chips leaders go from hero to zero, or short stacks rise to the top in a matter of minutes. Once play arrived at the final table, the large pay-jumps seemed to have affected the game of the finalists, as every hand was meticulously played out and every option was deliberated on. It took several long levels for play to go from 9 to 6 players, and then in less than 20 minutes we saw the field drop from 6 to 1.

Martin Nadeau arrived at the final table as the big chip leader, but before long Placide Junior Sanon caught up and eventually took over as top stack. The two maintained their 7-figure stack while the rest of the players slowly got blinded out. Once play entered level 26, where the blinds were 80K/160K/a20K, the short stacks had no more room to work with and we started seeing a lot more all-ins followed by eliminations.

Event 5 champion Lukas Soucek was the first in the series of eliminations, and he was quickly followed by Gerald Leblanc, Han Qin and finally Alexander Matveev – leaving Placide and Martin heads-up. Although Placide started with a 2-to-1 chip lead, the two players (who apparently predicted that they would end up heads-up against one another when the field still had 10+ tables left) decided to do an even chop and play for the required $1,500 extra. They both therefore locked in $13,232.00 and went on to battle it out for the title.

Heads-up took all of one hand, as after an open from Martin in the small blind, all the chips went into the middle on the flop. With Ace of Hearts 2 of Hearts 5 of Hearts showing, Placide tabled 5 of Clubs 7 of Hearts and was up against Ace of Diamonds 9 of Clubs. Placide caught a second pair on the 7 of Diamonds turn, and then improved to a flush on the King of Hearts river to secure the victory, the additional payout that accompanied it, and a unique commemorative piece that every winner gets to take home during the Playground Poker Fall Classic – the Champion’s Trophy.

Congratulations!

Alexander Matveev was the shortest stack when 3-handed action began, and he open shoved on the first hand of level 27 from utg, finding a call from Placide Junior Sanon in the big blind.

Alexander: Ace of Hearts 4 of Hearts
Placide: King of Hearts 8 of Hearts

Placide was calling out for a king, and surely enough, one appeared on the 5 of Diamonds King of Spades 4 of Spades 3 of Hearts 9 of Spades board to bring the tournament down to heads-up action.

2016/11/15 - 5:20 by Playground Poker

After a long span of time with little to no eliminations, Event 11 is starting to lose players rather quickly – as should be the case given the average stack to start this level. With the recent elimination of Han Qin in the last hand of level 26, the average stack creeped back up above 10bb, and the final 3 players have some room to show their chops as we approach the finale of this 8-max tournament.

Placide Junior Sanon raised to 400K from utg, and when action folded around to Han in the small blind, he went all-in for a touch more. Placide made the quick call out of turn, prompting a fold from Martin in the big blind.

With no room left to manoeuvre after doubling Alexander Matveev up just moments ago, Gerald Leblanc moved his last 2 big blinds in and found a call from Martin Nadeau.

Gerald: Jack of Spades 8 of Clubs
Martin: Ace of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds

Board: 2 of Diamonds 7 of Spades 4 of Hearts 3 of Clubs 9 of Spades

Event 5 winner Lukas Soucek was sitting on just shy of 500K when he open-shoved from utg +1. It folded around to Placide Junior Sanon in the big blind, who threw in a calling chip.

Lukas: 7 of Hearts 7 of Spades
Placide: Ace of Spades Jack of Clubs

Placide won the flip by spiking the turn on a 3 of Hearts 10 of Spades 2 of Diamonds Jack of Spades 4 of Diamonds board to bring the field down to 5 players. The field is still very short stacked due to the lack of eliminations, as the trend of the short stack doubling up is still all the rage on this final table.

After a long drought of eliminations, the average stack in Event 11 dropped below the 10bb mark. This was not due to lack of action, but in every all-in / call that occurred in the last 2 levels, the shorter stack won the pot.

Two hands ago, Lukas Soucek moved in his 160K stack (less than 2bb) and when action folded around to Grant Ellis in the big blind, he opted for the call. Lukas doubled up with Ace of Diamonds King of Spades versus 9 of Diamonds 10 of Spades, leaving Grant with around 2bb behind himself. The rest of his chips went into the middle on the very next hand, but his 5 of Clubs 9 of Clubs fell second-best to the Ace of Hearts 8 of Spades of Martin Nadeau.

Martin Nadeau opened to 200K from late position, and Marco Giuseppe Pontillo, who was limited in moves with a stack of only 135K, moved all-in for less from the small blind.

Martin: Ace of Hearts 2 of Hearts
Marco: 4 of Clubs 6 of Spades

Martin ran the nuts on the Ace of Spades 9 of Hearts 3 of Clubs 6 of Hearts Queen of Hearts board to win the small pot, but more importantly he eliminated a player deep in the tournament.

On the 4th hand of the final table, Randy Guy Vermette open-shoved for 680K from middle position, and once action folded around to Placide Junior Sanon in the small blind, he moved all-in over the top.

Randy: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Clubs
Placide: Ace of Spades King of Clubs

Board: 10 of Clubs Queen of Hearts 4 of Spades 10 of Hearts 3 of Hearts

Placide’s big slick remained the best hand after the board was dealt, and he climbed into the chip lead with roughly 1.65 million in chips.

After almost 9 hours of play, Event 11 is now down to the final table as only 9 players remain with chips in hand.

Back from the break, the two shortest stacks – David-Alexander and Ashkan – were eliminated in the first hand of play, while Ryan Patrick Friedkin was taken out in 10th place moments later.

The 9 finalists are now ready to play down to our tournament champion. Best of luck!
