The $250 Frenzy Champion: Daune Fernandez

2016/11/09 - 2:15 by Playground Poker

The $250 Frenzy has just come to a close, and after 5 days of poker we saw a 1,336-strong field be reduced to just one single player – Daune Fernandez!

Through 6 starting flights, 285 players made a seat to Day 2, of which 27 survived through onto Day 3. A total of 135 players locked in a cash prize in the event, ranging from a min-cash of $450 up to a whopping top prize of $50,000.

Mike Fraser returned as the chip leader and managed to navigate his stack into 3rd place. Thomas Lefort came in as an average stack, but took no time to run up his count into the chip lead, and maintained this spot for most of the day. It was only once action fell 6-handed that he gave up the driver seat to Daune, who then gave it up to Mike. He regained the chip lead when he eliminated Eric Ranger in 4th place, and never really looked back.

Once heads-up play began between Daune and Thomas, Daune held a nearly 3-to-1 lead. He chipped away at his opponent until Thomas finally scored a double up of almost 10 million with Ace of Hearts 10 of Hearts over 5 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs. Two hands later, action blew up once again between the two player. Thomas opened his button to 875K, and Daune 3bet to 2.3 million. Thomas moved all-in with Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds for almost 10 million and Daune made a quick call with 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs. As the board favoured Daune’s pair of tens, Thomas was eliminated in second place, earning a very respectable consolation prize of $34,069, while Daune claimed victory in The $250 Frenzy, locking in the $50,000 cash prize as well as a Playground Poker Fall Classic Champion’s Trophy.

Congratulations!

The $250 Frenzy only has 2 players remaining – Daune Fernandez and Thomas Lefort are battling it out heads-up for the title, and the $50,000 cash prize that accompanies it.

Daune started heads-up with the lead, as his 20-million stack nearly triples the 7-million of Thomas.

Good luck!

Mike Fraser lost a good chunk of his stack when opened his button to 600K, and called off the 3bet all-in of Thomas Lefort from the small blind. Mike tabled Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds and was ahead of the King of Clubs 10 of Diamonds of Thomas, until the board came and changed all that. With 9 of Spades 2 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs 4 of Clubs Queen of Spades showing, Mike was forced to pay off 4.8 million to his opponent, leaving him with under 2 million left.

He won a few pots to bring him up to around 2.3 million, and when he was in the big blind he called off all-in facing an open shove from Daune Fernandez in the small blind.

Daune: Queen of Spades 7 of Spades
Mike: Ace of Clubs 7 of Hearts

The board was once again unfriendly with Mike, as Daune ran a straight with 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 10 of Clubs King of Diamonds Jack of Hearts showing.

Play is now heads-up between Thomas (around 7 million in chips) and Daune (around 20 million in chips).

3rd place: Mike Fraser – $25,700.00

Daune Fernandez opened his button to 550K, and Eric Ranger called from the small blind. Mike Fraser clicked it back to 950K from the big blind, and the two others called the extra 400K.

On a 4 of Diamonds 3 of Spades Queen of Clubs flop, Eric and Mike both checked to Daune, who slid forward a bet of 1.25 million. Eric Ranger quickly moved over the top, and Mike let go of his cards while Daune made the call.

“I was making a move” explained Eric as he tabled 7 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts, and he was in big trouble versus the 3 of Hearts 4 of Hearts of Daune. The 2 of Hearts turn and King of Clubs river brought no change, and Daune won the massive pot, putting him above 15 million in chips.

4th place: Eric Ranger – $20,000.00

Mike Fraser has just jumped into the lead deep in this Day 3 of The $250 Frenzy. He opened to 450K from utg, and went heads-up with Eric Ranger in the big blind. With 6 of Hearts 4 of Hearts 10 of Hearts showing, Eric lead for 600K and Mike called. On the King of Hearts turn, Eric lead for 800K and Mike once again called. On the 8 of Diamonds river, Eric lead for a third straight street, firing another 800K. Mike made it 2 million total, and Eric quickly called. Mike showed Ace of Hearts 9 of Diamonds for the nut flush, and Eric tabled a second best Queen of Hearts Jack of Diamonds.

Mike now sits on around 11 million, while Eric slides to under 5 million.

Mike Fraser opened to 450K from the button, and folded when Thomas Lefort shoved over the top next to act. On the very next hand, Mike once again opened to 450K, and this time it was Stergios Alexandrakis who moved in over the top. Mike made the call and play was heads-up.

Mike: Queen of Hearts Queen of Hearts
Stergios: Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades

Board: 9 of Hearts 7 of Spades 3 of Clubs Ace of Diamonds 2 of Clubs

Mike won the hand with the pair of queens, and when the count was done his 3.7 million chip count had his opponent covered by a mere 25K.

5th place: Stergios Alexandrakis – $15,160.00

Action folded around to David Kovacic in the small blind, and he moved all-in. Daune Fernandez made the quick call from the big blind, and when hands were tabled, players joked about having a deja-vu as it was the same flip that happened moments ago between Eric and Daune.

David: 3 of Spades 3 of Clubs
Daune: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs

Even the board was similar, as Daune once again paired his king on the flop. This time, however, his flopped pair held on for the win as the dealer rung out 8 of Spades Jack of Diamonds King of Diamonds 9 of Spades 8 of Clubs. Daune added almost 2 million to his count with that hand.

6th place: David Kovacic – $11,100.00

Eric Ranger limped in from utg on the first hand back from the break, and once action folded around to Daune Fernandez in the big blind, he peeked down at his cards and announced all-in. Eric made the call to find himself flipping for his tournament life.

Eric: 3 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds
Daune: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs

Daune paired the flop, but Eric made a set on the river as the board read 6 of Spades Jack of Hearts King of Spades 6 of Diamonds 3 of Spades. He collected the 6 million chip pot and expressed his joy with a little dance.

Daune Fernandez has been very active in the last few orbits, and has showed down quite a few hands. After stacking Tony Stratopoulos in 8th place, he then went on to double up two players. First it was Georges Hallak that scored a double up with 10 of Hearts 10 of Clubs over 8 of Clubs 8 of Spades, and then David Kovacic doubled up his very short stack with King of Spades Jack of Spades over 7 of Spades 8 of Hearts in a battle of the blinds.

In a recent hand, Daune opened to 375K from middle position, and found a 3bet shove from Georges Hallak in the big blind. Daune made the quick call, turning over Queen of Diamonds Queen of Hearts. Georges tabled Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs, and with 3 of Clubs 5 of Spades 7 of Spades 8 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs showing on the board, his 1.5 million stack was slid across the table to Daune.

7th place: Georges Hallak – $7,700.00
