Event 4 Champion: Francois Graton-Valiquette

2016/11/07 - 21:48 by Playground Poker

Event 4 of the Playground Poker Fall Classic was a 1-day turbo NL Hold’em event priced at $100 + $10 that attracted a huge 205 player-field, of which 21 secured a payday. With a quick structure, players had to act fast and take chances if they wanted to have a shot at the $4,545 top prize being awarded, as a turbo format generally tends to favour the aggressive player.

Once play reached the final table, it was Francois Graton-Valiquette who was in the driver seat, and the only player above the 1-million chip mark. He slid during the first orbit of play, and saw nearly half of his chips get dispersed to his opponents before he picked up a pair of pocket kings to score a huge double up, putting him back atop the leaderboard. He didn’t spend too much time up there as once again a series of hands saw him drop to table short stack, hitting a low of 160K (around 2 big blinds at the time). As quickly as they vanished, his chips reappeared again after a few successful double-ups, and when play fell 5-handed he was back in charge. This time he managed to maintain his stack, and as players busted he remained the top stack.

In heads-up play versus Michel Gaudette, he began with a 2-to-1 chip lead. A few hands in, Michel limped from the small blind and Francois checked his option. With 6 of Diamonds 2 of Spades Queen of Clubs showing, he checked first to act, and then snapped the all-in of his opponent. Francois tabled 6 of Hearts 2 of Clubs for bottom two-pairs, and was in excellent shape versus the Ace of Clubs 4 of Diamonds high of Michel. The turn and river brought no change to the hand, and with no deals made in this event, Francois earned himself the full amount of the top prize, as well as a Playground Poker Fall Classic Champion’s Trophy, and an entry in the Champion’s Freeroll.

Congratulations!

Francois Graton-Valiquette was using his big stack to try and steal the blinds when he open-shoved his button, but Vincent Tremblay was dealt a hand in the small blind worth calling with and the two went heads-up.

Francois: 7 of Spades 8 of Spades
Vincent: Ace of Clubs 9 of Clubs

Francois took the lead by pairing the flop, and held for the win on a 4 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts Queen of Spades King of Spades Jack of Clubs board to bring Event 4 down to heads-up. Francois leads heads-up play with 3.4 million over the 1.7 million of Michel Gaudette.

Fred Belanger limped from the small blind, and Francois Graton-Valiquette checked his option from the big blind. Action checked down to the river, and with 7 of Spades 7 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts Ace of Hearts 10 of Diamonds showing, Fred lead out for 200K. Francois raised all-in, and tabled 7 of Hearts 4 of Spades for a flopped full-house after Fred made the call, showing a second best 10 of Spades 8 of Hearts.

Kordian Zwolinski only had 2bb when he returned from break, and after folding the first few hands dealt to him, he eventually commit his stack from utg. Francois called from the button, and the blinds completed to go 4-handed to the flop.

With 7 of Clubs 10 of Clubs 4 of Clubs showing, Michel Gaudette shoved all-in to bring the hand down to heads-up. He tabled King of Hearts Jack of Clubs, and locked it in versus Kordian’s Queen of Spades 8 of Clubs once the turn brought another club. The river was dealt as a formality, and Kordian made his exit in 5th place.

A short break is underway in Event 4, and the 5 remaining players will return to blinds at 100K/200K/a25K. With a little over 5 million total chips in play, we can expect to see some fireworks in the hands to come. The chips distribution is fairly even, and every pot essentially creates a new chip leader so it’s still anyones game.

Here are the counts entering level 30:

After over 2 levels of 6-handed play, where we saw numerous all-in / call situations with no eliminations, it was finally Andre St-Jean who was all-in and at risk and didn’t survive.

He moved in from middle position with under 5bb, and found a call from Francois Graton-Valiquette in the big blind.

Andre: Ace of Hearts 8 of Clubs
Francois: King of Diamonds Queen of Clubs

Francois caught a pair in the nick of time as the dealer rung out a 10 of Spades 10 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 6 of Hearts King of Spades board. The field is now down to 5 players, however due to the lack of eliminations in the last few orbits, the average stack is quite shallow with a new blind level just moments away.

Action folded around to Fred Belanger who, fresh from a nearly triple up, placed a raise to 275K from the small blind. Francois Graton-Valiquette 3bet all-in from the big blind and found a quick call from his opponent.

Fred: Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds
Francois: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds

Both players paired the 10 of Hearts Ace of Spades 4 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts board, but Fred had the better kicker. He slid forward 780K to be doubled up, taking effectively half of Francois’ chips.

Kuong Chhe Kuoch rode his short stack as far as it could possibly go, as he was blinded down to under 2bb after folding the last 2 orbits. From the big blind position, he moved all-in for less after an all-in from Fred Belanger and a call from Francois Graton-Valiquette.

Kuong: Jack of Spades 4 of Spades
Francois: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds
Fred: Ace of Hearts 10 of Hearts

Board: King of Hearts Queen of Hearts 8 of Spades 9 of Clubs 5 of Hearts

Fred found a flush on the board to win the pot, and doubled his 355K stack in addition to adding another 120K from Kuong, who was eliminated in the process. Francois still maintains the chip lead with nearly 1.4 million in chips in front of him.

Gregory Holley was crippled just before the final table, and as he had a stack in Day 2 of The $250 Frenzy, he gave up his remaining chips to go and play the other tournament. Unfortunately for him, he busted on the other side rather quickly and has come back to rail his last antes get blinded out (the rules stipulate that once you leave one tournament to go play another, you can’t come back). He was down to just one ante left when Fred Belanger was all-in and at risk. Fred was holding Ace of Hearts 6 of Hearts and managed to overcome the Ace of Spades 10 of Hearts of Francois to double-up, taking away a pay jump from Gregory.

After Gregory’s elimination came the end of Simon Bissonnette-du-Cap’s tournament life, as he was taken out by table opponent Kordian Zwolinski.

Francois Graton-Valiquette came to the final table as chip leader, however after losing a few of the first pots played, he saw his stack get cut nearly in half. He then found a pair of King of Spades King of Hearts and found a huge double-up versus the Ace of Spades 8 of Spades of Domenico Vessio to regain the chip lead. Domenico was left with a mere 25K behind and was knocked out on the very next hand.

Play resumes 7-handed.

8th place: Domenico Vessio – $590.00
9th place: Simon Bissonnette-du-Cap – $440.00
10th place: Gregory Holley – $330.00
