After a bit of a roller-coaster ride on the final table, Laurence Grondin dropped down the leaderboard and became the short stack in 9-handed action. She then waited patiently for a spot to move in her last few blinds, and after several hands finally picked up something worthy of a shove.

She moved in from middle position with Ace of Diamonds 5 of Spades, and found a call from Pirooz Bayat 2 spots to her left as action closed heads-up. Pirooz tabled 7 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds, and picked up just enough on the King of Diamonds 8 of Hearts 9 of Hearts 6 of Clubs 9 of Spades board to take out his opponent and add a few more blinds to his 7-figure stack.

Khaly Dang moved all-in for 220K from late position and found a call from Pirooz Bayat on the button. She tabled Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds and chopped the pot with Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds as two-pairs appeared on the board.

A few hands later she once again open shoved, this time from middle position. Pirooz made the call and Alexander Matveev folded his 30K big blind, leaving him with 50K behind.

Khaly: Queen of Diamonds Queen of Clubs
Pirooz: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs

Pirooz found some help on the 6 of Clubs 10 of Spades Ace of Hearts 9 of Spades 6 of Hearts board to bring the field down to 8 players, while Alexander earned a pay-jump with under 2bb in front of him.

9th place: Khaly Dang – $5,460.00

Through 23 levels of play, the field of 243 players has been diminished to a single final table of 10 players. With a $50,000 difference in pay between 1st and last on the final table, this is what it all boils down to.

After winning a huge pot to bring us to the final table, Lukas Soucek leads the way with 1.5 million chips, around 25% of the chips in play. On his tail is Frederic Pierre, who sits in second with 1.1 million in front of him.

The stage is set and action is now underway. Stay tuned to our Playground Poker Blog for live updates as we play down to our Event 5 champion.

Good luck!

Salvatore Commisso defended his big blind after Lukas Soucek opened from utg +1. With Ace of Hearts 7 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts showing, Salvatore check-raised to 100K after Lukas fired 45K. When the 6 of Hearts fell on the turn, Salvatore moved all-in for around 200K only to find out he was drawing dead, as Lukas snapped and tabled Ace of Clubs Ace of Diamonds for a flopped full house. Salvatore turned over 9 of Diamonds 10 of Spades and the 5 of Clubs river was dealt as a formality.

Jason Conforti was sitting in the big blind with 261K in front of him when Daniel Mason open-shoved from the button with a slightly bigger stack. Jason peeled Ace of Diamonds Jack of Clubs and threw in a calling chip, to find himself flipping for 1/2 million in chips versus 5 of Diamonds 5 of Spades.

The dealer pulled out a 2 of Hearts 7 of Spades 3 of Spades 4 of Clubs Queen of Hearts and Jason gracefully congratulated his table-mates before taking a stroll to the tournament desk to collect his 12th place receipt.

Pirooz Bayat opened to 45K from the button, and Yan Prevost-Dumont moved all-in over the top from the small blind. After a minute in the tank, Pirooz announced the call and hands were tabled.

Pirooz: Jack of Diamonds Jack of Hearts
Yann: King of Spades Jack of Clubs

Pirooz held for the win on a Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs 9 of Hearts Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs board and slid forward 396K to be doubled up. Once Yann paid his opponent he was left with 60K behind.

On the next hand, with 3K in for the ante he pushed for 57K from the button. Laurence Grondin had little to no choice to make the call for 37K more, and she tabled 8 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts. Yann turned over Queen of Hearts 5 of Diamonds and went on to win the pot by pairing his queen on the flop.

Moments later, he open-shoved with 6 of Spades 6 of Hearts and was called by Frederic Pierre with Ace of Hearts 8 of Hearts. Yann flopped a straight flush draw, but with 8 of Spades 10 of Spades 7 of Spades 4 of Hearts Queen of Diamonds showing, his run in Event 5 was cut short in 13th place.

Jaime Staples out 14th; Douglas James takes 15th

We missed the action, but Douglas James was just sent to the rail in 15th place.

Jaime Staples has been eliminated in 14th place after navigating an extra-long bubble period with a short stack and then laddering up through a combination of well-timed aggression and a little luck once the bubble had burst.

The action was opened by Lukas Soucek who raised to 53K and then action folded around to Staples in the sb – he raised all in. The bb got out of the way and action returned to Soucek, who quickly called.

Staples: Ace of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds
Soucek: Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades

The flop was pretty bad for Jaime: 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 4 of Spades but not without hope. The 2 of Hearts on the turn removed most of that hope and then the King of Diamonds took the rest – Staples was out in 14th.

Fortin Demers out 17th

  • Level: 21
  • Small Blind: 8K
  • Big Blind: 16K
  • Ante: 2K
  • Chip Average: 405K
  • Remaining: 15

Alex Fortin Demers found himself with a small stack facing a decision with two other relatively short-stacked players all-in before him – and presumably due to his stack size, he decided to get it in as well, creating a 3-way all in with Khaly Dang (largest stack) and Laurence Grondin (shortest stack).

Alex: 4 of Spades 4 of Clubs
Laurence: Ace of Hearts 3 of Hearts
Khaly: Queen of Hearts Queen of Clubs

The flop gave Laurence a big draw but nevertheless seemed safe enough for Khaly to hope to take out both players: 8 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 9 of Hearts – and with action closed in the hand it wasn’t an issue.

Then the 8 of Diamonds cam on the turn and things looked even better – but the Ace of Diamonds on the river made the final distribution a little more complicated. Laurence took from both players to triple up, but Khaly also got the side pot – and Alex was eliminated.

A few minutes later Siamak S was also eliminated in 16th spot.

16th place: Siamak S, $3,340.00

17th place: Alex Fortin Demers, $3,340.00
