Staples doubles through Malm

Jaime Staples had chipped up considerably since the last break and the bursting of the bubble, but so had Michael Malm. Staples open raised all-in from middle position and when it folded to Malm he looked at his cards – Ace of Hearts King of Clubs – and instantly made the call.

Staples: 8 of Diamonds 8 of Spades – he needed to hold to stay in the tournament.

The flop was not good: King of Hearts Jack of Spades 2 of Diamonds put Malm well in front, and the Queen of Clubs had Staples convinced the end had arrived. There was a collective gasp around the table as the 8 of Hearts came on the river. Malm shipped 117K over to Staples, who now has a reasonably healthy stack.

There are just 20 players left – there will be a seating redraw at 18 players remaining.

Athanasiou out 32nd; Event 5 is in the money

After almost an hour of hand-for-hand play and many small stacks doubling, long tank-folds and assorted bubble steals, John Athanasiou got it in with Queen of Diamonds Queen of Clubs against Khaly Dang’s Ace of Spades King of Spades.

The flop brought 2 of Spades 3 of Hearts King of Hearts to put Dang in the lead and the Jack of Spades 5 of Spades changed the hand she won with if not the outcome.

The rest of the players are now in the money, and with so many short (or very short) stacks the action is likely to be wickedly fast for the next 6-8 eliminations.

Reyes out; down to 4 tables

Michelle Reyes has been eliminated after losing two hands in a row. In the first she shoved from utg+2 and found a call from Alexander James Allison, who held slightly fewer chips. Everyone else folded and the hands were tabled:

Reyes: Ace of Clubs Queen of Spades
Allison: 9 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds

Allison’s pair held up as the board ran out King of Hearts 7 of Clubs 10 of Spades 6 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds and Reyes was left with almost nothing behind.

On the subsequent hand, she opened all-in and finally found a call from Michael Malm in the big blind.

Reyes: Ace of Diamonds 2 of Hearts
Malm: 6 of Spades 5 of Diamonds

The flop favoured Malm: 4 of Spades 5 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds and neither the turn Jack of Hearts nor river 9 of Clubs brought Reyes the Ace (or 3) she needed.

With 36 players left a table has been broken and play continues near the bubble with 4 full tables of 9 players each.

Day 2 of Event 5 has resumed, and in the early action this morning three players have already been eliminated: George Iliacopoulos, Timothy Deering and Guillaume Nolet. This brings action very close to the bubble – 31 places will pay in this event.

Play will continue today until there is a champion, so depending on the pace of play – and eliminations – it could be a very long day. There are a few players who start today with stack-size problems, but on the whole the field is quite bunched up in terms of chip counts, with a couple outliers plus and minus but a lot of play possible for a lot of the field.

Event 5 in the Playground Poker Fall Classic presented by partypoker.net is a $1,000 + $100 NL Hold’em Deepstack Freeze that began at 11:00am on November 8th and will resume at 12:00pm on Wednesday November 9th. There were a total of 243 players in the event, and of those just 40 will return to play when action resumes.

Jason Conforti
Jason Conforti

The chip leader to start Day 2 will be Jason Conforti with 377,000 in tournament chips. Conforti is a local player who has had fantastic success in Playground-hosted tournaments recently, including cashes in 3 of the 4 events he has played so far in the Fall Classic.

Conforti can’t allow himself to feel too comfortable with his lead, however, as the field is chock full of talented players who will definitely have a say in who gets the big prizes tomorrow. Douglas James, who spent much of Day 1 as chip leader, will re-start with 262,000, just a hair behind local PLO and Hold’em cash game grinder Siamak S, who is overdue for a big tournament score and skilled enough to book one. There are so many players with impressive resumes left in the field it’s really anyone’s game. WSOP bracelet winner? Check. WPT Main Tour Event final tableist? Check. Past big Playground event winner? Check, check, check. Rising star of online poker streaming? Check!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow.
