Sexton Wins: History is made; the legend grows

2016/11/18 - 1:46 by

Mike Sexton has won the 2016 partypoker.net WPT Montreal!

The certified Hall of Famer, all-around poker legend and the voice and face of the WPT for its entire 15 year history has added to his legend and made history at Playground Poker Club by winning this $3,850 NL Hold’em event, now in its 5th year. For his victory, Mike wins $405,880.00 in cash, a US$ 15,000 entry in the WPT Tournament of Champions, the Playground Poker Champion’s Belt, his name (further) immortalized on the WPT Champions Trophy as well as a gorgeous Hublot watch and a pair of gold Monster 24K headphones!

Mike and his heads up opponent, Benny Chen, engaged in a truly epic heads up battle that lasted 157 hands before a champion could be crowned. Benny proved to be an extremely skilled player and held a large chip advantage for long stretches of the evening, but Mike proved to be up to the challenge and kept on grinding, sometimes with a small stack, sometimes with more… until finally he took the chip lead in hand #262 – and secured the victory just 2 hands later.

In the ultimate hand of the night, Benny was first to act and shipped preflop for 8,150,000 in chips. Mike looked at his cards, let out a “Whoa” and instantly called, turning over Queen of Hearts Queen of Clubs. Benny flipped over King of Clubs Jack of Diamonds – and would need some help to keep any of his chips.

The flop was spread from right to left: 4 of Spades 9 of Clubs Queen of Diamonds – a queen was the door card, the final card revealed on the flop. Mike raised a fist into the air in celebration – all he had to do was to fade Benny’s gutshot draw… The turn was Ace of Clubs which, though it connected well with Benny’s hand and the board was pretty much a blank in reality… and then a real blank on the river, the 2 of Diamonds! And Mike Sexton was the champion!

The WPT Montreal attracted a combined total of 648 entries, and after 32 levels of play through 5 days of poker, only 2 players remain. WPT’s own Mike Sexton is currently in a heads-up duel versus 2013 Millionaire-Maker winner Benny Chen, as they both attempt to join the elusive WPT Champion’s Club and secure a very prestigious win. In addition to earning a WPT Montreal Champion’s Belt and a spot on the WPT Champion’s Trophy, the winner will also take home a $405,880 cash prize, a Hublot watch and Monster pair of headphones.

Benny has the chip lead to start, but his 10,575,000 stack only slightly favours Mike’s 8,875,000 stack. Heads-up is now underway, and if you wish to watch the live stream you can do so here, or by following the “Live Stream” link at the top of the page.

Congratulations on making it this far, and best of luck!

Nadir Lalji has been eliminated by Mike Sexton to bring the WPT Montreal into heads-up action.

From the small blind, Mike Sexton opened the action to 350,000, and then was forced to a decision when Nadir moved all-in for 2,200,000. Holding a pair in 3-handed poker, he opted for the call and the two players found themselves in a flip, as Nadir tabled Ace of Diamonds Queen of Hearts.

The dealer rung out the board, and with the window card showing the 8 of Clubs, it was all but over. With no help on the 8 of Clubs Jack of Hearts 3 of Clubs 4 of Spades 5 of Hearts board, Nadir shook Mike’s hand and was awarded $183,320 for his 3rd place finish.

Ilan Boujenah has been eliminated in 4th place in a blind-on-blind hand between he and Benny Chen. Action folded around to Benny (sb) and he opted to just call, prompting Ilan to shove over the top for his tournament life. Benny snapped off the call and quickly flipped over his Ace of Spades Ace of Clubs – well ahead of Ilan’s 6 of Spades 6 of Clubs.

The flop put things almost entirely out of reach: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds and it was followed by the turn Jack of Clubs and the river 9 of Hearts and Ilan was sent to the rail in 4th place.

Ema Zajmovic is a local cash game specialist who managed to end Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4 as the second chip leader, and as play continued on 2 tables playing down to the official final table, she emerged as a very strong table captain – to the point that she almost induced a couple of players to blind out instead of playing hands against Ema, her aggression, and her stack size at the time.

On the final table, Ema started off with her old table boss ways, but it didn’t work quite as well as it had the day before. It wasn’t a question of poor play – not in the least – as much as it was a question of bad timing. After a few orbits she lost a key pot when she 3bet Benny Chen with Ace of Clubs King of Hearts only to face an all-in from Benny and his Ace of Spades Ace of Diamonds. Now among the short stacks, Ema seemed to partially abandon the strategy that had worked so well.

A few orbits later, Ema chose to shove over top of a cutoff raise to 250K by Mike Sexton – only to find a quick call from Mike who was holding Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds – well ahead of Ema’s King of Diamonds Queen of Hearts. Mike’s Aces held on the 5 of Spades 4 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds 9 of Spades board, eliminating Ema in 5th place.

After making a hero call with 4th pair on the river not long ago versus Benny Chen, Jake Schwartz lost a big part of his stack and was left will little room for maneuvering. He let a few hands go by before finding an unopened pot from the small blind, where he moved in his final 695,000 stack. Nadir Lalji was in the big blind and found a hand worthy of a call, and the two players tabled their hands.

Jake tabled Jack of Diamonds 9 of Hearts, which were two live cards to Nadir’s Ace of Clubs King of Spades, but with Ace of Spades King of Clubs Jack of Clubs 2 of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds showing on the board, Jake was eliminated in 6th place, while Nadir picked up some much needed chips. He remains the shortest stack at the table, but has a little more room to work with now.

From a starting field of 648 entries, the WPT Montreal is now down to just 6 finalists, who are back today to play down to our WPT Montreal Champion. With already $81,740 locked-in, the players are gunning for that $405,880 top prize.

The final 6 is lead by WPT’s own Mike Sexton, who eliminated Samuel Louis Gagnon in 7th place last night to take over the chip lead. Second in chips is Ema Zajmovic, born in Bosnia but raised here in Quebec. 2013 Millionaire-Maker winner Benny Chen returns third in chips, while Ilan Charlot Boujenah holds the 4th biggest stack. Jake Schwartz comes in as one of the two short stacks, but carries a ton of tournament experience with him and is a force to be reckoned with. Rounding the final 6 is Nadir Lalji, who bagged just under 20 big blinds.

The stage is set and the cameras are rolling as action resumes now. A live stream on a 30-minutes delay is available for the viewers at, simply click here or on the “Live Stream” tab found at the top of the page.

Good luck to the finalists!

When the WPT Montreal went on break following level 28, chip-leader at the start of the day Samuel Louis Gagnon was riding the shortest stack of the final 7 players. Once action resumed, he 3bet his final 18 big blinds from the button after an open. Mike Sexton moved all-in over the top from the small blind, isolating the at-risk player and closing the hand heads-up.

Samuel: 10 of Diamonds 10 of Spades
Mike: Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts

Samuel’s pocket pair was in bad shape to start the hand, and as the dealer rung out a King of Spades 2 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 8 of Hearts Queen of Clubs board, he found no help and was eliminated in 7th place.

With only 6 players left in the event, the WPT Montreal has reached it’s official televised final table of 6 players, who are currently bagging and tagging their chips for tomorrow’s finale. Below are the chip counts for Day 5.

We’ve lost Antonin Duda in 8th place from this “unofficial” final table, and we are now just 1 elimination from the official televised WPT Montreal Final Table, which will play out to a champion tomorrow.

Antonin fell very short stacked early in Day 4, hitting a low of only 3bb, but he managed to recover. As players were busting around him, he remained in his seat, short stack at hand, before he finally brought it up to nearly 20bb. He saw his stack drop back down under 10 big blinds when he picked up a pocket pair of 10 of Spades 10 of Hearts in the hole. He 3bet over the top of Ema’s open, and called off the rest when she 4bet shoved. Antonin was poised for the double up as Ema tabled King of Hearts 3 of Hearts, that is until a King of Diamonds appeared on the river to eliminate him from the tournament.

A few hands after the elimination, the final 7 went on a short break. Below is a table with the chip counts as play enters level 29.

Terry Leon Schumacher has gone out of the WPT Montreal in 9th place.

Ema Zajmovic opened the action in middle position with a raise to 125K. Terry then 3bet shoved from the button for his last 890K, and perhaps surprisingly Benny Chen flat called from the bb. Ema folded and the cards were revealed:

Terry: Ace of Spades Queen of Clubs
Benny: Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds

Terry’s hand was dominated and the community cards did nothing to help: 7 of Clubs 9 of Clubs 8 of Spades 9 of Spades 10 of Hearts. Benny’s Ace-King high was good and Terry was eliminated.

9th place: Terry Leon Schumacher, $40,540.00
