Action continues apace in the partypoker.net WPT Montreal but in the past orbit the norm has been to double players up, not eliminate them from the tournament.

Ema opened to 125K in one hand and Jake Schwartz shoved over the top for around 350K. Ema made the call and found her Queen of Hearts 9 of Clubs facing Jake’s Ace of Spades 6 of Spades.

The board runout left no room for doubt: Ace of Hearts 5 of Hearts Ace of Diamonds on the flop, and then Jake made quads on the Ace of Clubs turn. The King of Hearts river was meaningless.

The very next hand was played between Antonin Duda and Ilan Boujenah and after the action went check-check on the 7 of Clubs King of Hearts King of Clubs flop, the dealer placed the 3 of Spades on the turn. Antonin led out for 160K and found a call from Ilan. The river came 5 of Clubs, there was an all-in and a snap call and the hole cards were exposed:

Ilan: Queen of Clubs Jack of Clubs
Antonin: Ace of Clubs 7 of Clubs

Antonin made the nut flush and doubled through Ilan.

New counts to level 28

Once Benny Chen finished stacking his new chips, we took the opportunity to get full chip counts for the remaining 9 players in the field. Benny is the new chip leader in the tourney with 9 players remaining.

As the tournament director made the announcement quoted in the title, the dealer at the table was busy distributing hole cards for the final hand. And, as is so often the case, the final hand before break was a game-changer.

We missed the preflop action, but there were two players to the flop: Jack of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Jack of Hearts and Robert McGhee led out for about 160K, which was called by Benny Chen. The turn was the 2 of Diamonds and Robert checked – only to be faced with a bet of around 350K from Benny. Robert made the call and the river was dealt: 3 of Hearts.

With the break countdown clock ticking away, Robert checked and Benny quickly went all in (he covered Robert by a lot), sending Robert into the tank. He thought through his options for at least 7 minutes – and just when it started to look like the break itself would be history, at least for these two players, Robert made the call.

Benny: King of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds
Robert: Ace of Spades Ace of Hearts

Benny had indeed made his flush and got full value for it – while Robert hit the rail.

10th place: Robert Earl McGhee, $33,560.00

The remaining 10 players came together on the final table about an hour ago and although there has been plenty of action, there have been very few hands that have made it all the way to the river. Chips are moving around, but not in huge numbers.

This situation certainly can’t be maintained for long – but it seems like it will be a while before they “break the seal” on this WPT final table.

The “unofficial” final table

Just a few hands after losing most of his stack to Robert McGhee on a bad beat, Stuart Taylor has been eliminated in 11th place. He got his remaining chips in from the cutoff. Terry Schumacher (button) folded but Robert made the call from these. Ema Zajmovic clearly had a decision from the bb, but ended up folding as well.

Stuart: Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts
Robert: Queen of Spades Queen of Clubs

Stuart was in trouble and the flop offered little help: Jack of Clubs 6 of Clubs 5 of Hearts, The turn Ace of Hearts offered a tiny sliver of hope, hope that was dashed, however, on the river 7 of Diamonds.

11th place, Stuart Taylor, $33,560.00

Alex Keating lost much of his stack earlier in the level when he doubled up Robert McGhee, but faced with the aggressive play of Ema Zajmovic to his right, he had difficulty finding a good spot to get in his under-100K stack until it dwindled quite a bit below that.

Finally he was faced with a bet that was larger than his remaining stack made from utg by Mike Sexton – and he chose to call from the bb.

Alex: 4 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds
Mike: Ace of Clubs King of Spades

Alex was able to flop a gutshot draw: 6 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds King of Hearts

But was unable to improve when the 10 of Spades 8 of Clubs completed the board.

Just a few minutes later Tam Ho was also eliminated, but unfortunately we missed the hand.

Jason Mann eliminated in 14th (again)

Jason Mann made a deep run in last year’s WPT Montreal and was eliminated in 14th place – and this year he has duplicated the result exactly.

He was finally eliminated by Ema Zajmovic, who has been playing her large stack quite aggressively, raising at least 75% of her hands in late position and not decreasing the rate very much out of position, benefitting from a very short-stacked Alex Keating to her direct left, with Mike Sexton 2 to her left and Jason and his short stack beside him. She’s been picking up all of the “dead chips” in the past half hour – but has also picked up some more substantial pots as well.

Jason finally got it in with 5 of Spades 5 of Clubs on a 5 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds 6 of Spades flop – and found a quick call from Ema holding 6 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds. She was behind but had tons of outs, and the 7 of Clubs on the turn only added to her chances. The 8 of Spades on the river gave her the runner-runner straight which sent Jason to the rail.

14th place: Jason Mann, $26,810.00

Martin Raus places 15th

  • Level: 26

  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 1.6M
  • Remaining: 14
  • Entries: 648

Martin Raus returned from the break with a stack of only 125K. With the blinds up at 20K/40K/a5K, he knew he had to make a move sooner than later if he wanted any chance at pulling through. On the first hand of level 26, he picked up a monster – Ace of Spades King of Diamonds. Mike Sexton opened the hand to 100K from middle position, and Robert Earl McGhee came along for the ride from the button. Martin then 3bet all-in, and the two players called.

The board ran 8 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts Queen of Hearts 6 of Hearts, and Mike fired 125K on the river to bring the hand down to heads-up. He tabled Ace of Hearts 9 of Clubs for the nut-flush, ending Martin’s run in 15th place.

Martin collected $26,810 for his deep run in this WPT Montreal.
