Tomas Larivée-Magni
Tomas Larivée-Magni

Tomas Larivée-Magni is a very talented local player who had a bit of a breakthrough in the past year, having placed 2nd in the $1,500 +$150 No Limit Hold’em CPPT World Cup of Cards for $78,000.00 last september, and 2nd also in the $225 + $25 No Limit Hold’em Frenzy for $43,800.00, in the Playground Poker Fall Classic of last year.

Tomas was sitting on a little less than 100K when he was dealt his final hand in the big blind position, the last one before the dinner break. The under-the-gun +1 player opened to 6.5K, which was 3bet to 17K by the player on his left. When all other players got out of the way, Tom made it 44K to go.

At that point, the original raiser put 106K on the table, enough to cover both opponents. The player who had 3bet mucked his hand, and Tomas reflected for no more than 10 seconds before he made the call, somewhat reluctantly.

He was holding Kings, and found himself in one of the situations most dreaded by tournament players, deep in an Event. His Kings had run into Aces.

Nice run Tomas.

The players have just returned to the tables after an extended dinner break during which we put together two lists of players – the first is a leaderboard at this point in the event, which shows that Ilan Charlot Boujenah is the current leader, having surpassed the half-million mark. The second table is a rundown of the counts of some of the other “known” players in the field.

Laplante ousts Henry

  • Level: 15
  • Small Blind: 1.5K
  • Big Blind: 3K
  • Ante: 500
  • Chip Average: 159.3K
  • Remaining: 122
  • Entries: 648

2016/11/14 - 17:16 by

Ronald Laplante raised preflop to 7K from hijack and found a call from Samuel Louis Gagnon (cutoff). Ema Zajmovic folded from the button and Nathan John Henry shoved from the sb. The bb folded and Laplante made the call. Gagnon folded and the hands were exposed:

Laplante: Ace of Clubs King of Hearts
Henry: 8 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds

The flop was instantly in Laplante’s favour: Ace of Hearts 7 of Hearts 2 of Spades and the rest of the community cards brought no relief for Henry: 3 of Spades 7 of Clubs. Laplante is now playing approximately 165,000 in his stack.

Slowly but surely the tournament is winding up towards the bubble… there are currently 122 players left. Players will take a 45-minute long dinner break following this level.

Boujaoude triples up

  • Level: 15
  • Small Blind: 1.5K
  • Big Blind: 3K
  • Ante: 500
  • Chip Average: 148.4K
  • Remaining: 131
  • Entries: 648

2016/11/14 - 16:57 by

Andrew Boujaoude has tripled up, bringing him close to the chip count he had to start the day. Ryan Rivers opened all-in from utg+1 and Andrew quickly shoved what looked to be a larger stack over the top. Action folded around to Han Xu in the cutoff, who made the call. The blinds folded, and with no further action to come, the cards were exposed:

Rivers: 6 of Hearts 6 of Clubs
Boujaoude: Queen of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
Han Xu: Ace of Spades 3 of Spades

The dealer opened King of Spades 4 of Spades 3 of Clubs on the flop to give Han Xu a whole bunch of additional outs, but the King of Diamonds 2 of Hearts on the turn and river brought no joy and he shipped 37K to Boujaoude. It looked like there might be a tiny side-pot for Rivers, but when his stack was broken down and counted, it was in fact smaller than Boujaoude’s 37,000.

Xuan Liu hits the rail

  • Level: 14
  • Small Blind: 1.2K
  • Big Blind: 2.4K
  • Ante: 400
  • Chip Average: 134.1K
  • Remaining: 145
  • Entries: 648

2016/11/14 - 16:10 by

Xuan Liu qualified through her first and only Day 1 but unfortunately for her was unable to translate that into a deep run in this year’s WPT Montreal. Xuan lost most of her chips a few hands early while we were away from the tables, and after a couple of hands holding around 2bb, she open jammed from the cutoff – and considering her stack size, found calls from both the small (Poorya Nazari) and big blind (William Blais).

The board ran out 7 of Hearts 3 of Clubs King of Diamonds Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds as the two players checked it down each street and the hands were tabled:

Nazari: Ace of Hearts 9 of Hearts
Blais: 3 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts
Liu: Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts

William Blais shipped a small pot while Xuan Liu was eliminated.

Ilan Boujenah and Tam Ho have both been playing with healthy stacks since the beginning of play today, but in the past level-plus since the break, both have grown their chip count considerably – they’re both flirting with the 400,000 chip mark.

The race is on to see who can hit the half-million mark first – one of these two players, or perhaps another player will hit the accelerator and make their move…
