Bouchard wins big pot, jumps in the leaderboard

Jean-Francois Bouchard has been amongst the big stacks for most of this Day 1a, and although he recently lost a few chips, he just took a huge pot of table-mate Jeffrey Cormier to regain a spot atop the leaderboard.

Apart from a preflop raise, action was rather quiet until the turn, with a board showing 5 of Spades 7 of Hearts Queen of Clubs 9 of Hearts. This is where things blew up, as we saw a raising war between the two players which finished when both of their stacks were in the middle. Jeffrey opened up 9 of Spades 7 of Spades for two-pair, but was drawing dead to Jean-Francois and his set of Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds. To add insult to injury, the river brought the 7 of Clubs, filling up both players.

With that pot, Jean-Francois jumped up to over 125,000, which is likely one of the biggest stacks in the room.

    Siebert jumps into the lead

It’s only been half a level since we last did an update on the chip counts, and at the time Sylvain Siebert was in 2nd place holding just north of 100,000. Since then, he has increased his stack to nearly 180,000, putting him in the driver seat of this Day 1a.

Late registration is now over, and this starting flight saw a total of 144 players. Play has been brought down to 9-handed poker, and will remain so until the end of the day.

    Event 8 – Results & Payouts

    2015/08/27 - 5:55 by Playground Poker

Event 8 in the Montréal Poker Expo is a $100 + $20 + $100 NL Hold’em 50/50 Bounty that began at 7:30pm on August 27th. There were 225 players in the tournament which brought the prize pool to $21,825.00. This does not include the portion of the buy-in that went to players’ bounty chips ($100 each).

Note that at 11 players remaining, the players agreed to reserve $450 plus the trophy for the winner and to distribute the rest of the remaining prize pool ay chip-chop. The prize winnings in this table reflect this actual amount awarded to the player (thus, their relative stack size with 11 players left) but the ranking reflects the order in which they finished the tournament.

    Event 8 Champion: Daniel Fortier

    2015/08/27 - 5:22 by Playground Poker

    Event 8 Champion: Daniel Fortier

Daniel Fortier was one of the shorter stacks when the 11-way deal was made, however he managed to overcome the remainder of the field to emerge as the Event 8 champion, earning himself an extra $450 along with his already agreed-upon $1,045 share of the chop. In addition to this, he also took home a stunning Montréal Poker Expo Champion’s Trophy, as well as a handful of bounties!

After a lot of back and forth in heads-up play versus opponent Moshe Cohen, Daniel finally sealed the deal after calling Moshe’s check-shove on a flop showing 4 of Hearts King of Clubs 10 of Spades with Queen of Diamonds 10 of Clubs. Moshe turned over Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs, but failed to improve on the running Queen of Hearts 10 of Hearts to end his run in second place.

    Congratulations Daniel!

Heads-Up: Daniel Fortier vs Moshe Cohen

In what could only be described as a cooler in 3-handed poker, Vasilios Sklavounos was eliminated by Daniel Fortier in a preflop raising war.

Vasilios: Ace of Spades Queen of Spades
Daniel: Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds

Board: 7 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs Queen of Diamonds 6 of Clubs 9 of Hearts

Play is now heads-up between Daniel and Moshe, and although Daniel began with the chiplead, Moshe doubled up on the first hand, as his 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs triumphed over Ace of Hearts 8 of Clubs. Stacks are quite even at the moment, so it’s still anyones game! And yes, Moshe is still on the hunt for his first bounty of the night.

Daniel Fortier just added two more bounties to his collection, as he eliminated Yannick Labattaglia and Brett Blake in one shot.

Yannick, who was crippled the hand before by Moshe Cohen, threw in his 1/2 big blind stack in with 4 of Hearts 2 of Hearts, and was followed by Brett with Queen of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds and finally Daniel with King of Spades Queen of Hearts, who had them both covered. The dealer rang out a board of 6 of Spades Queen of Spades 7 of Diamonds 6 of Hearts 3 of Hearts, and Daniel won the pot to bring us down to 3-handed poker.

Generally speaking, in bounty tournaments, the bounties hold less values once players are in the money, as the top prize will dwarf the prizes awarded for each bounty. Tonight is a different case however, as players have already made a deal, locking in their prizes, and are playing for the bounties, the extra $450 up top, as well as a Montréal Poker Expo Champion’s Trophy. Therefore there is a little more incentive to call players all-ins on this final table.

Interestingly enough, Moshe Cohen, who is still in the field, has zero bounties to his name!

Vasilios Sklavounos has just picked two of them up, as he found himself all-in in a 3-way pot holding 6 of Spades 6 of Hearts versus the Ace of Clubs Ace of Diamonds of Viken, and the 4 of Spades 4 of Hearts of Andrew. He turned a set on the Queen of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 4 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds board, and scooped both players as he went in with the largest stack.

Moments later, Daniel Fortier, holding King of Hearts King of Spades, eliminated Behrouz Ghaedi and his Ace of Diamonds Queen of Hearts, earning himself a $100 cash prize.

5 remain in contention of becoming our Event 8 champion, and Vasilios and Daniel share the chip lead, holding roughly 1,100,000 each.

As expected, since the deal was made, play has opened up quite a bit. Yannick Labattaglia just sprung up the leaderboard, as he won a 3-way all-in with 10 of Hearts 10 of Spades versus Benjamin’s short stack shove with King of Spades 5 of Clubs and Behrouz’s isolation with Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs. He now holds over 1-million in chips.

We lost Todor Petkov the hand after, bringing us down to 8 players.
