The Strike Out Cancer Charity Event Champion: Mark Wells

The Strike Out Cancer Charity Event Champion: Mark Wells

After 3 long days of poker, Mark Wells managed to turn a 20,000 stack into 24 million, in the mean time turning his $135 (+ $25 charity contribution) investment into a sweet $24,440 cash prize!

Heads-up play with opponent Cherif Mohand was fairly brief, as fatigue seemed to have reduced Cherif’s level of patience. He began playing very aggressively, and it seemed to work at first, until he got caught in a hand that lead to his elimination. Cherif opened preflop to 700,000, and then raised all-in on the 7 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts flop for nearly 10,000,000 after Mark lead out for 900,000. Mark made the call with bottom pair, and his 5 of Clubs 6 of Clubs held versus Cherif’s King of Hearts 8 of Clubs, as the running cards were 3 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds.

With that pot, Mark emerged as the champion of Event 1 – Strike Out Cancer Charity Event, and awarded him a stunning Montréal Poker Expo Champions Trophy along with his cash prize.

Congratulations!

    3rd place: Fazeel Munawar

Mark Thomas Wells has chipped up considerably since the break, and used this momentum to bing this tournament down to heads-up.

He 3bet shoved facing an open to 600,000 from Fazeel, and found a call.

Mark: 3 of Hearts 3 of Clubs
Fazeel: King of Spades Queen of Spades

Mark flopped a full house on the 3 of Spades 9 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds King of Clubs 5 of Spades board, sending Fazeel on a walk to the cashier.

Heads-up play is underway! Mark and his ~18 million are leading the way over Cherif and his ~6 million.

We are still 3-handed in Event 1, and we’ve seen the balance of chips shift several times. Mark Wells began as the chip leader, at one point rising to nearly 15-million in chips, however he lost a few big pots and found himself drop to the bottom of the leaderboard a few orbits ago.

Fazeek Munawar recently took over the chip lead, as he double-up through Mark up to 13-million, however gave it right back a few hands later. Cherif Mohand has also been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and he’s seen his stack fluctuate between 2 and 8 million.

At the moment, all three players are basically even, sitting on roughly 8 million each!

    4th place: Danny Rouleau

Moments after a deal was made 4-way, the short stack Danny Rouleau found himself all-in versus Cherif Mohand on a flop of King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds 6 of Hearts.

Danny: Queen of Spades Jack of Spades
Cherif: King of Spades 8 of Diamonds

Danny failed to improve on the running cards (10 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs), bringing us down to 3-handed poker in Event 1.

    5th place: George Kazarian

When action folded around to him in the small blind, George Kazarian wagered his remaining ~2,400,000, and was called by Mark Thomas Wells in the big blind.

George: Ace of Diamonds 7 of Hearts
Mark: 6 of Hearts 6 of Spades

George needed to improve his hand if he wanted to stay on this final table, however the Queen of Diamonds King of Clubs 3 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs board brought him no help, ending his run in 5th place.

    6th place: Ian Armorer

Ian Armorer pulled the trigger from under the gun, moving in his 1,800,000 stack. Fazeel Munawar made a quick call, and the others got out of the way.

Ian: 2 of Diamonds 2 of Spades
Fazeel: 10 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds

The flop was interesting for Ian, however the running cards were of no help to him, as the board showed Ace of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds 4 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds.

    8th place: David Nadler

David Nadler just lost back to back hands to George Kazarian to finish his deep run in 8th place.

In the first hand, David opened to 350,000 from middle position, and called George’s late-position all-in for 1,140,000. His King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds couldn’t overcome George’s Ace of Diamonds Jack of Clubs on a board showing 9 of Spades 8 of Spades 2 of Hearts Jack of Hearts Ace of Spades, leaving him with 840,000 behind.

He moved his stack in the very next hand, and again found himself heads-up and behind George.

David: 5 of Spades 5 of Clubs
George: Queen of Spades Queen of Hearts

Board: 10 of Clubs 2 of Hearts 3 of Clubs 8 of Spades Ace of Clubs
