Montréal Poker Expo Main Event Champion: Chan An Luong

2015/09/02 - 18:23 by Playground Poker

Montréal Poker Expo Main Event Champion: Chan An Luong

The Main Event in the Montréal Poker Expo has just come to an end, and after 4 days of poker, the starting field of 647 players was reduced down to only one finalist: Chan An Luong!

When play fell down to three players, an agreement was made whereby each player took a share of the prize pool based on their chip counts at the time, leaving an additional $12,500 to be won by the eventual tournament champion – who would also take home the beautiful Montréal Poker Expo Main Event Champion’s Trophy.

Jonathan Brassard was the first to get eliminated after the deal, as Chan An cleaned him out in two huge hands. The tournament was then heads-up between Chan An and Chanracy Khun, with Chan An holding nearly a 5-to-1 chip advantage.

After only a few hands of play, Chanracy found himself all-in and far behind. He 3bet his last 2,800,000 from the big blind facing a min-raise of 400,000, and found a call from Chan An, who couldn’t withhold his smile.

Chanracy: King of Diamonds 7 of Clubs
Chan An: Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds

Chanracy almost made a straight to double himself up and stay in the game, but in the end it was the pair of aces that won the hand on a board of Queen of Spades 10 of Hearts 9 of Spades 2 of Clubs 9 of Clubs. With that, Chan An became the Montréal Poker Expo Main Event Champion, collecting a sweet $92,500 cash prize, as well as the Champion’s Trophy! Chanracy collected $73,140 for his runner-up finish.

Congratulations!

    3rd place: Jonathan Brassard

Jonathan Brassard was the chip leader not too long ago when a deal was struck 3-way, however he has just made his exit after losing two big pots to Chan An Luong.

In the first hand, Chan An made a questionable call in a limped pot with middle pair for the remainder of his chips, and got lucky in the process. On a flop of 3 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 6 of Hearts, he called off his stack with 6 of Spades 2 of Spades, and was up against the Jack of Spades 4 of Hearts of Jonathan. He spiked a second pair on the turn, as it brought the 2 of Hearts, and held on for the win with the river being a blank (10 of Diamonds).

Several hands later, Chan opened his button to 500,000, and called Jonathan’s 3bet of 1,175,000. On the flop of 5 of Hearts Jack of Hearts 6 of Spades, he pushed all-in after Jonathan c-bet 1,175,000. Jonathan made the call with his draw, and they were virtually flipping.

Chan An: King of Diamonds Jack of Spades
Jonathan: 8 of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Chan An filled up with the running Jack of Clubs 5 of Clubs, and Jonathan, who was barely covered in the hand, made his exit in 3rd place. He collected $90,000, as agreed during the 3-way deal.

When play fell down to three players, they asked the tournament director to pause to clock in order to negotiate a potential deal. Once the stacks were counted and the numbers revealed, the players went into a small negotiation, and finally came to an agreement.

The structure of the tournament requires at least $12,500 to be left up top for the eventual winner, who will also take home the Montréal Poker Expo Main Event Champion’s Trophy, leaving $243,140 available to be split. Based on their chips and further negotiations, here is what the players finally agreed to:

    ChanracyKhun$73,140.003,475,000
    JonathanBrassard$90,000.0010,025,000

Although these figures are locked in, play continues until we have a winner, who will earn the extra $12,500 as well as the trophy.

Congratulations gentlemen! And best of luck!

    4th place: Azim ‘Samuel’ Popatia

With little options left due to his short stack, Azim moved in from the small blind for 1,000,000 in chips, and found a call from Jonathan in the big blind.

Azim: 6 of Hearts 4 of Clubs
Jonathan: Queen of Clubs 6 of Spades

Azim picked up some outs on the flop, but failed to improve on the 3 of Diamonds Ace of Spades 5 of Diamonds King of Clubs 10 of Diamonds board to place 4th in this Main Event of the Montréal Poker Expo.

    5th place: Kevin MacDonald

Kevin MacDonald lost most of his chips in a rather strange hand. Chan An raised his button to 1,300,000, and when the bet was announced to Kevin, he thought for a moment before announcing a clear, loud ‘call!’. It led to believe that Kevin thought Chan An was all-in, however he still had 1,475,000 behind. When Kevin realized this, he opted to move all-in blind before the flop was brought out. With the board showing 2 of Spades Jack of Diamonds 3 of Clubs, Chan An made the call, slamming his cards open on the table.

Chan An: Ace of Spades Jack of Hearts
Kevin: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds

The running cards were of no help to Kevin, as they were the 10 of Hearts and 7 of Hearts, leaving him with only 675,000 behind.

He moved all-in the next hand from the small blind, and was called by Azim in the big blind, and Jonathan, who limped under the gun. It was checked down to the river, where all three players opened their hands.

Kevin: 2 of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds
Azim: Queen of Clubs 5 of Spades
Jonathan: 2 of Clubs 2 of Spades

Board: 7 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 4 of Clubs 10 of Spades 9 of Clubs

With nobody hitting the board, Jonathan picked up the pot with his pair of deuces, eliminating Kevin in the process.

Action folded around to Jonathan Brassard in the small blind, who applied some pressure on short-stacked Chan An Luong by moving all-in. Chan went into the tank for a few minutes before finally making the call with his 1,650,000 stack, and as he table his hand, the other player’s were a little surprised to see it took him this long to make his decision. However, when the stakes are this high, every decision can be life-changing.

Chan: Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs

Jonathan: Ace of Clubs 7 of Clubs

Jonathan almost scored the knockout, as he picked up a world of outs on the flops, but Chan’s hand held on the 6 of Clubs King of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 3 of Hearts 2 of Spades board to bring him up and over 3.4 million.

‘Samuel’ not ready to go just yet

Azim Popatia, better known as ‘Samuel’ by the poker community, fell down to around 500,000 before doubling up through Chanracy a few hands earlier. He has then managed to chip up a bit by stealing some blinds here and there, before finding another full double up just moments ago.

Kevin MacDonald was the initial raiser in the hand, as he opened to 300,000 from the button. Azim moved in from the small blind for 1,065,000, and before Jonathan had a chance to act, Kevin mucked him hand. With Kevin out of the way, Jonathan had a slightly easier decision, and made the call.

Azim: Ace of Clubs 5 of Clubs
Jonathan: King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds

It looked like the end of Azim, as Jonathan paired the turn, but he rivered a flush on the 2 of Hearts 6 of Spades 6 of Clubs Queen of Clubs 3 of Clubs board to bring him up to around 2.5 million.

Kevin was awarded a 10-minute penalty for his out-of-turn action.

Easy come, easy go; 6th place: Cong Son Dao

Two hands after doubling up to nearly 6 million, Cong Son Dao was eliminated out of the Main Event.

In the first hand following the double up, Cong opened from utg, and called the 3bet of Jonathan from the big blind. Jonathan c-bet 1,075,000 the 6 of Hearts 7 of Clubs 8 of Clubs flop, and then tank-called the all-in from Cong, who had him covered.

Cong: 5 of Hearts 5 of Diamonds
Jonathan: King of Clubs King of Spades

Jonathan’s pair of kings held in the hand, as the running cards were the 2 of Spades and Ace of Spades, and he doubled up to just over 8.5 million, leaving Cong with around 1.5 million.

On the very next hand, Kevin MacDonald moved all-in for 1,690,000 from the cutoff in an unopened pot, and Cong called off his remaining chips from the big blind.

Kevin: King of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds
Cong: Ace of Clubs 10 of Clubs

Kevin picked up just enough to win the pot and score the elimination, as the board ran Queen of Hearts Queen of Spades 4 of Clubs 8 of Spades 5 of Diamonds, and he now holds around 3 million.
