Bouchard wins big pot, jumps in the leaderboard

Jean-Francois Bouchard has been amongst the big stacks for most of this Day 1a, and although he recently lost a few chips, he just took a huge pot of table-mate Jeffrey Cormier to regain a spot atop the leaderboard.

Apart from a preflop raise, action was rather quiet until the turn, with a board showing 5 of Spades 7 of Hearts Queen of Clubs 9 of Hearts. This is where things blew up, as we saw a raising war between the two players which finished when both of their stacks were in the middle. Jeffrey opened up 9 of Spades 7 of Spades for two-pair, but was drawing dead to Jean-Francois and his set of Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds. To add insult to injury, the river brought the 7 of Clubs, filling up both players.

With that pot, Jean-Francois jumped up to over 125,000, which is likely one of the biggest stacks in the room.

    Siebert jumps into the lead

It’s only been half a level since we last did an update on the chip counts, and at the time Sylvain Siebert was in 2nd place holding just north of 100,000. Since then, he has increased his stack to nearly 180,000, putting him in the driver seat of this Day 1a.

Late registration is now over, and this starting flight saw a total of 144 players. Play has been brought down to 9-handed poker, and will remain so until the end of the day.

Late registration is now closed and there are a grand total of 144 entries in today’s Day 1a. This is typically the smallest (by far) of the starting flights in an event like this – so in fact this is quite a decent total for today.

Two players have jumped out to an early lead as their stacks surpass 100K but the leaderboard trends quickly to smaller stacks and there are quite a few players below the 75K it took to make the leaderboard who are still looking to make a bigger move than just doubling their starting stack.

That being said, there are still a full 7 levels to be played today – more than enough time for someone to build a stack with which to make a run on Day 2.

    Players to watch

    Sylvain Siebert

There are a few players of note in the field – notable because of past successes here in big events at Playground Poker Club.

    • Jean-Philippe Piquette – JPP aka @PiquetteAces is a Players Club member who once took down the Main and the High roller back to back in the same festival. He takes a lot of ribbing from his friends, who sometimes give him the nickname “Mincash” – but in fact he’s a very skilled player with a decade of strong published results around the world.
    • Alexandre Lavigne – Alex hasn’t been around as long as some of some of the players in this event, but he’s had some amazing success at Playground including 2 big event final tables.
    • Timothy Ulmer – TJ is an American player who adopted – and was adopted by – Montreal after Black Friday. He can sit at a live tournament table and remain incognito for hours – but he’s one of the top online legends in the history of poker, and his strong, creative play “outs” him before too long.
    • Ami Alibay – Ami is a local player who has been touring the circuit for about 18 months and has had some success along the way. Runner-up in a $10K High Roller tournament here at Playground in May of 2014, Ami is also one of the friendliest guys at the tables – though players shouldn’t confuse friendliness for weakness!
    • André Boyer – André was Quebec’s first WSOP bracelet winner over a decade ago – and he’s also one of our most recent winners, as he managed to win a second WSOP bracelet this past summer in Las Vegas! Plus, almost a decade before he won his first bracelet he was a WSOP Main Event final tableist…
    • Sylvain Siebert – Sylvain is a pure Playground Poker Club legend. Every time he plays he seems to have success – including 3 final tables at 3 different WPT events held here at Playground over the years.

Mike Leah is one of Canada’s top poker players and a frequent visitor to Playground Poker Club events, and the Montréal Poker Expo is no exception. He just came to say hello, though, and let us know that he was – unexpectedly – taking a day off today… he ran his KK into AA preflop and the better hand held up.

He was smiling for a few reasons: a) he’s a very experienced player and knows that these things happen; b) he’s just a nice guy; but mostly c) this is a next-day re-entry event, so he didn’t travel to Montreal for nothing – he can go for the win again tomorrow.

    On to the Main Event!

    2015/08/28 - 10:45 by

With 8 preliminary events concluded and a raft of satellites behind us, attention in the Montréal Poker Expo turns to the $1,000 + $100 Main Event. Festival Main Events of this buy-in have become a valued tradition at Playground Poker Club, and over the years they have been some of the greatest events we’ve hosted. In this case, there’s a $500,000 Prize pool guarantee – so it’s sure to be a huge payday for the eventual winner!

One of the most appealing things about a tournament at this price is the fact that there are so many ways to enter via satellite. In this case. satellites and seats via the monthly Tournament Leaderboard have been awarded since May, and there are about 150 players who will be entering via this lower-cost route. Just last night the big “Eve of the Main” satellite alone awarded 42 seats!

The Montréal Poker Expo Main Event features 3 Day 1s – Day 1a today, Day 1b on Saturday, and Day 1c on Sunday. As a “Next Day Re-entry” event, anyone may play one, two, or all three starting days to try and qualify for Day 2 – and if a player qualifies more than once, only their best stack moves to Day 2.

The action gets under way at 11am and each Day 1 will play through 13 45-minute levels. Players start with 30,000 tournament chips. Late registration is open until the end of the break following level 6 – which is to say that you can join the tournament with a full stack until 4pm today.

    Good luck!
