Cong Son Dao raised to 325,000 preflop from middle position, and went heads-up to the flop versus Azim Popatia, who called from the big blind.

They both checked the 7 of Hearts King of Clubs 7 of Spades flop, and Azim then lead out 300,000 on the 3 of Clubs turn, which Cong flat-called. Azim lead out for another 700,000 on the Queen of Hearts turn, and after a minute in the tank, Cong pulled the trigger and moved all-in for a total of 2,140,000. Azim made a quick call, tabling Ace of Hearts 7 of Clubs for three-of-a-kind, but Cong scooped the pot with his full house, as he tabled King of Hearts King of Spades.

Azim was left with a notch above 1 million after the hand.

    Very cautious play

    2015/09/02 - 15:10 by

The Main Event has entered a period of very cautious play as all of the remaining players seem intent on laddering up a position or two. There have been a few all-in bets that have found folds, a few folds to 3bets for less than players’ stacks, and just 1 or 2 hands that have gone to showdown.

Blinds have just gone up as the tournament has moved into level 32, and given the stack sizes, players won’t be able to hold out for very long.

Cong Son Dao and Jonathan Brassard have both found a remedy to their short-stack problem – they have both doubled up though Kevin MacDonald.

Cong’s double came after a preflop raise by Kevin to 250K, which he and Chanracy both called. The flop was 6 of Diamonds King of Diamonds Ace of Clubs. Chanracy checked, Kevin bet 300K, and Cong went all-in. Chanracy folded, and kevin made the call.

Cong: Jack of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds
Kevin: 7 of Hearts 7 of Spades

The turn was gave Cong one of his draws: Queen of Spades and the river was an interesting, though ultimately meaningless 7 of Clubs.

The very next hand it was Jonathan’s turn. All the chips got in preflop and Jonathan and Kevin tabled their hands.

Jonathan: Ace of Diamonds 6 of Spades
Kevin: Ace of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Jonathan found the answer on the Jack of Diamonds 4 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds board and then Kevin couldn’t re-suck on the 7 of Spades 8 of Hearts turn and river so Jonathan stacked the chops.

Players are on a break and we’ve taken the opportunity to refresh the counts for the remaining 6 players in the field. Chanracy Khun has added a lot of chips to his stack so far in today’s session, but where he had a huge lead on the field to start the day, Kevin MacDonald has almost caught up to him – he’s less than 100K behind at this point.

Fully half the table should be considered short stacked as they start level 31 (blinds 60K/120K/a20K) – Chan An Luong, Jonathan Brassard, and Cong Son Dao are all hovering around 10bb.

    7th place: Jared Newcombe

When action folded around to Jared Newcombe on the button, he elected to move in for his remaining 1,355,000 chips, which represented 13.5 big blinds. Chan An got out of the way, but Chanracy asked for a count, and after a quick pause, announced the call.

Jared: Ace of Hearts 8 of Clubs
Chanracy: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds

Jared found no help on the 2 of Hearts Queen of Clubs 5 of Hearts 6 of Spades 4 of Spades board to finish this Main Event in 7th place, while Chanracy climbed up to over 5.5 million with that hand.

    8th place: Eric Aucoin

Eric Aucoin has been eliminated in an interesting hand that could well have proved to be even more interesting. Eric had dropped from 2nd in chips to having a relatively short stack, and open-raised all-in from middle position for 1.375M in tournament chips. Action folded around to Kevin who thought for about 40 seconds before raising all in over for 2.615M.

We know the exact count because after Azim folded his sb, Jonathan asked for the count as he considered his own options in the hand. Upon hearing the amount – and learning he was covered by Kevin, he was in the tank as well – eventually folding.

Eric hadn’t been very happy to see Kevin shove over top, and when the cards were flipped we learned why.

Eric: Ace of Hearts 7 of Hearts
Kevin: Ace of Clubs Jack of Spades

There were no diamonds in either hand as the board ran out 10 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds, and the 10 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds kept Kevin in the lead and he merged Eric’s million-plus stack into his own.

Jonathan Brossard was the short stack of the table when he 3bet his 760,000 stack from the small blind facing an open to 220,000 by Eric Aucoin from under the gun. Eric made the quick call, but found himself way behind:

Eric: 9 of Spades 9 of Hearts
Jonathan: Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds

Board: Queen of Hearts King of Clubs King of Spades Queen of Clubs Ace of Spades

Two hands later, he Jonathan picked up another pot as he 4bet preflop to 775,000 after an open from Kevin to 160,000, and a 3bet to 315,000 by Azim, who both folded their hands.

With those two hands, Jonathan has creeped up to over 2 million.

    9th place: Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson arrived at the final table as the short stacked player and managed to ladder up one finishing position before being eliminated in 9th place.

It was Kevin MacDonald that did the deed. He was playing the button for Robert’s big blind hand, and chose to min-raise to 160K and had no intention of raise-folding. When Robert shoved, he called almost instantly.

Robert: Queen of Spades Jack of Clubs
Kevin: Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts

The community cards had no solution for Robert: 9 of Clubs 6 of Hearts 2 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds and he was sent to the tournament desk to pick up a payout ticket.

    10th place: Marcello Miceli

Marcello Miceli has been eliminated from the final table by Azim Popatia. Marcello was aware from the outset today that he was playing a very short stack, and he was clearly looking for an opportunity to get his chips in and try for a double.

It finally happened a couple orbits into the action today when he opened all-in from UTG. Action folded around to Azim, who simply called. The button and both blinds folded (Jonathan Brassard in the bb thought about it for a few seconds) and the cards were revealed.

Marcello: King of Clubs Jack of Clubs
Azim: Queen of Diamonds Queen of Spades

Azim was in the lead by quite a margin and stayed there on the flop of 9 of Diamonds 2 of Spades 8 of Clubs – and all doubt was removed on the turn Queen of Hearts. The river was the 2 of Clubs.

Play has resumed in the Montréal Poker Expo Main Event with 10 players remaining and a huge portion of the prize pool yet to be awarded! When play on the Final Table began the players averaged just about 50bb deep, but with no eliminations over more than 2 levels, the average stack has gone down to just under 25bb.

    Good luck to all!
