There’s a new Cherif in town

A huge hand just developed between former chip-leader Mark Thomas Wells and Cherif Si Hadj Mohand.

Mark opened to 200,000 from under the gun, and action folded around to Cherif in the big blind, who quickly announced all-in. Mark asked for a count, and was informed the total was of 2,060,000. He went into the tank for a few moments, and finally announced the call.

Cherif: Jack of Diamonds Jack of Spades
Mark: Ace of Diamonds King of Spades

They both looked nervously at the board, as they were virtually flipping for the chip-lead of the tournament. The dealer rang out Queen of Hearts 9 of Hearts 10 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 9 of Spades, and Cherif’s pair of jacks was good to win the over 4 million chip pot!

    Kazarian chips up

George Kazarian is a very popular local player who has been hanging in tough since starting Day 2 with a middling stack, and now that the tournament is down to 2 tables he’s starting to really accumulate. Most recently George eliminated Noah Reboh when his 9 of Clubs 9 of Spades held against Noah’s King of Diamonds Jack of Hearts on a Queen of Spades 7 of Spades 2 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds board. Noah was eliminated in 15th place.

George is now sitting at just under 2M in chips.

Wells up to 4.1M; Brassard out

Mark Thomas Wells has just eliminated Jonathan Brassard to take his already-impressive stack up to over 4.1M in chips. The two players had tangled a few times already tonight but they finally both had what it takes to go all the way. In the fateful hand, Jonathan (in seat 3) opened to 150K and Mark raised to 375K. Everyone else got out of the way and action returned to Jonathan who took some time before putting out a 4bet to 870K. Wells didn’t need to think for long: “All In”.

Jonathan made the call and the hands were tabled.

Jonathan: King of Diamonds King of Clubs
Mark: Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs

The flop was instant gratification for Mark: Ace of Diamonds 2 of Spades 3 of Diamonds and the last two community cards couldn’t save Jonathan: 8 of Spades 5 of Diamonds.

A huge hand just occurred on table 39! It all started with an open from Brian Mclean to 175,000 from under the gun. Fazeel Munawar made the call from the cutoff, and was followed by an all-in from Hezkiel Menache on the button, who held 410,000. The small blind got out of the way, and Sammy Chao announced he was all-in for just over 900,000. Brian Mclean came over the top of the two all-in players, which forced Fazeel out of the hand, who open-folded Ace of Spades Queen of Hearts.

Brian: Queen of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds
Hezkiel: Ace of Spades Ace of Hearts
Sammy: 9 of Diamonds 9 of Spades

Board: Jack of Diamonds 3 of Clubs 5 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 7 of Diamonds

The best hand held, and Hezkiel more than tripled up his stack. Brian took the remainder of Sammy’s stack, sending him to the cashiers in 17th place.

Marc Doyer-St-Jean has been among the chip leaders since mid-way through Day 2, but he has just lost a huge pot on a cooler as Tedde Ballanger doubled through, putting him under the chip average for the first time tonight.

Tedde open shoved from middle position and Marc called very quickly. The other players folded and the cards were on their backs:

Tedde: King of Diamonds Jack of Spades
Marc: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Hearts

Marc not only had Tedde dominated but also kept any possible diamond draws from being any use.

The flop of King of Spades 4 of Hearts 6 of Hearts was not kind to Marc, however, and the turn and river 10 of Spades King of Hearts just twisted the dagger. Ballanger stacked up 1.2M total after the hand, and Marc is left with about the same.

Jason Mottershead was falling quite short, and with the blinds just around the corner, he opted to move his last few blinds in from under the gun. It looked as if the steal would go through, until Danny Rouleau woke up with a monster in the big blind.

Jason: King of Spades 4 of Hearts
Danny: Ace of Diamonds King of Diamonds

Jason was in a world of trouble, and couldn’t overcome Danny’s premium on a board reading Ace of Clubs 5 of Spades 7 of Hearts 9 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds to finish in 18th place.

Adeel Aman Bangash only had a few blinds left when he pushed from middle position in an unopened pot, and he found a snap call from Brian Mclean in the big blind.

Adeel: 6 of Spades 6 of Hearts
Brian: King of Diamonds King of Clubs

Adeel almost found the help he was looking for, as he flopped an open-ended straight draw, but in the end the 5 of Clubs 10 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts 2 of Spades board was the last of his Event 1 run.

We also lost Pierre-Luc Gaudreau in the mean time, as he fell to the hands of chip leader Marc Doyer-St-Jean.

Vincenzo Delia was the next casualty, as he was all-in preflop with Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds versus the 7 of Clubs 7 of Hearts of Fazeel Munawar. The Queen of Clubs 6 of Hearts 2 of Spades 5 of Spades 5 of Clubs board was of no help to him, and he was eliminated in 20th place.

Sammy Chao lost almost half his stack, as he 3bet Fazeel Munawar’s open up to 350,000, and then folded to the 4bet all-in. He left himself with 450,000 in chips, which he managed to double-up the very next hand, as his 8 of Diamonds 8 of Spades overcame Hezkiel’s Jack of Hearts 9 of Hearts in a preflop all-in war. Hezkiel was left with only 200,000 after the hand.

Isham Yamani was crippled in a battle of the blinds, and he moved in his ~450,000 stack in from the small blind and found a quick call from Danny Rouleau in the big blind.

Isham: King of Hearts 8 of Spades
Danny: Ace of Clubs King of Clubs

He was left with 70,000 after Danny filled up on the King of Spades King of Diamonds 2 of Clubs Jack of Clubs Ace of Hearts board, but managed to triple it up the very next hand, until finally losing it moments later to place 19th.

With that elimination, we are now down to our final two tables, and play just entered level 28.

Welcome back to the third and final day of the Strike Out Cancer Event, which saw an impressive 1,186 entries combined over 4 starting flights. 290 players returned to the felts yesterday for Day 2, but by the end of the night, only 23 remained.

Leading the way into Day 3 is Marc Doyer-St-Jean, who bagged a total of 2,140,000, however he is closely followed by a handful of other players. The stacks are fairly close, and it’s still anyones game at this point.

There are a number of players to watch out for, including Ruben Perceval (1,580,000), who has proven to be a menace on the tables time and time again; Sammy Chao (1,050,000), who bubbled the final table of this very event in the last series here in April; Isham Yamani (550,000), who has final tabled this event twice in the past, as well as cashed in many other events here at Playground Poker Club; and Brian Bond (445,000), a past champion of this same event, who has also final tabled another opening event here earlier this year.

Play will continue until we have our champion of Event 1 of the Montréal Poker Expo, and players are battling it out for a sweet $29,120 cash prize, as well as a beautiful Champions Trophy!

    Good luck!
