The Mix Max closes with a 5-way deal

2017/07/07 - 3:28 by Playground Poker

The July Playground Power Weekend kicked off today with a $200 + $20 NL Hold’em Mix Max event, which attracted a field of 111 players. After playing through 10-handed, 8-handed and 6-handed poker, the final stages of the event were played out on 4-handed tables until only 5 remained, who formed the final table.

After a few orbits of play on the final table, some chop talk began between the finalists, and they agreed to take a look at the ICM numbers to see if a deal can be reached. Michael Korovine was the chip-leader at the time, holding almost double any other player, while the other 4 players were all virtually even-stacked, within 1 big blind separating 2nd place from 5th place.

When the tournament staff returned with the ICM numbers, all 5 parties agreed and the deal was sealed, bringing an end to the tournament. The final agreed-upon numbers are listed below.

Next up on the schedule is Day 1A of the $500 + $50 Deepstack event, which features a massive $200,000 guarantee and 3 starting flights. Day 1A takes place tomorrow at 11am, while Days 1B and 1C are on Saturday, at 11am and 7pm respectively. All surviving players will be reunited under one roof on Sunday at 1pm for Day 2, with the conclusion of the event taking place on Monday at 7pm.

Two quick eliminations have brought the Mix Max to the 5-handed final table.

Brian Hodhod took 6th place after seeing his chips go to Fadi Haddad. While waiting to balance the tables, George Kazarian open shoved his last 72,000 from utg, and found a call from Dat Doan in the big blind.

George: Queen of Hearts Jack of Hearts
Dat: King of Hearts 10 of Clubs

George took the lead by flopping a pair on the 9 of Diamonds Queen of Spades 3 of Clubs 8 of Hearts Jack of Spades board, however Dat caught up by rivering a straight and bringing the field down to 5 players.

Michael Korovine leads to start the final table with around 650,000 in chips.

Only in shorthanded poker will a situation like this occur – every player at table 56 was all-in during a recent hand! Granted they were 3-handed….

Tomas Larivee Magni was the first to jump into action, moving his short stack all-in from the button. Chip-leader Michael Korovine then 3-bet shoved over the top from the small blind before Christian Rho called off his stack from the big blind.

Tomas: King of Spades Jack of Clubs
Michael: Ace of Hearts 5 of Spades
Christian: 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs

Michael spiked an ace in the window and his pair held on to win the pot as the board read Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds 9 of Clubs Queen of Clubs 8 of Diamonds.

The double elimination brought the field down to the two final tables.

Recent eliminations:

8th place: Christian Rho – $800
9th place: Tomas Larivee Magni – $600
10th place: Pascal Desrosiers – $500

Pascal Desrosiers

In 4-handed play, Brian Hodhod found himself on the right side of a massive cooler deep in the Mix Max. He tabled pocket Aces following a pre-flop raising war against Pascal Desrosiers, and was up against pocket Kings. With no help on the board, Pascal was forced to pay his opponent 182,500, leaving him with only 2,000 behind. He has since found a few consecutive double-ups and now sits on around 50,000 going to break.

In-the-money eliminations so far include Jean-Francois Lescadres (12th – $420) and Olivier Finlay Mercer-Smail (11th – $460).

After several hands of hand-for-hand play, Michael Korovine eliminated table-opponent Jean-Francois Beaulieu to bring the Mix Max field into the money.

This was the third confrontation between the two players while action was hand-for-hand, with the score being 1-1 between the two so far. On the first hand, Michael Korovine open-shoved for almost 100K from the small blind with King of Spades 7 of Diamonds, finding a double-up from the big blind holding Ace of Hearts Jack of Hearts. Jean-Francois was left with around 10bb behind, and less than an orbit later the two clashed again. This time it was Jean-Francois that scored the double-up as he rivered a pair with 9 of Clubs 6 of Clubs versus the Ace of Hearts 7 of Clubs of Michael, who called a button-shove from the big blind.

On the final hand the two played together, Michael applied pressure his shorter-stacked opponent by once again open-shoving on his big blind. Jean-Francois found a pair in the hole and made the call, but his 7 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds was drawing dead on the turn versus Michael’s King of Hearts 3 of Spades, as the board read King of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds King of Clubs 8 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds.

The final 12 players are now assured of a cash prize of at least $420, but all eyes are on the top prize of $5,404.

Congratulations!
