    Event #1 Champion: Steve Allard

    2018/07/26 - 19:36 by Shawn McCrory

Event #1 of the July Power Weekend, the $80 + $10 Mix Max Re-entry, brought out a field of 75 runners. The strong turnout built a prize pool that far exceeded today’s $4,000 guarantee. Today’s event put the players through their paces as they transitioned through several different formats, from 10-handed play at the start of the day through 8-, 6- and finally 4-handed play.

Francois Meloche jumped out of the gate to start the day, building a huge chip lead before the first break. Meloche maintained his momentum after the late registration period ended and the tables began transitioning through the various formats. Benoit Larochelle Legrand shot up the leaderboard shortly before the second break of the day and managed to build a stack to rival Meloche’s not long after the players returned. After building up his stack, Larochelle kept his composure all the way to the final table.

The five finalists agreed to a chop of the remaining prize pool. Claude Amar collected $645 for his fifth place finish, and Francois Meloche took home $835 for finishing fourth.

When three players remained, the terms of the five-way deal were re-negotiated. The $500 that had been kept aside for the winner was further divided between the three finalists, leaving $110 for the winner. Andre Dries was the next player eliminated, taking home $975 in process.
In the end, it came down Benoit Larochelle and Steve Allard. When the heads-up battle started, Larochelle had a significant chip lead, but Allard battled back.

Both players showed their determination. Each hand was hard fought, and each decision was carefully considered. Allard evened the stacks after roughly 20 hands of heads-up play. From there, the two players played small pots and traded a narrow chip lead back and forth. Eventually, with the stacks still close to even, they found found a flop that enticed them both to move all in. Allard flopped a straight, faded Larochelle’s draw to the nuts and took down the final hand of the day, as well as the champion’s crown. Congratulations!

Francois Meloche held a dominating chip lead for most of the afternoon, but he ran out of steam at the final table. Once it came down to the final four players, Meloche lost consecutive pre-flop all ins to Benoit Larochelle Legrand, who is the new chip leader. As the blinds made their way up to the 5K/10K level, it became more and more likely that any eliminations would come as a result of the pre-flop action.

After losing most his chips with Queen of Hearts 9 of Clubs to Larochelle’s Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts, Meloche lost the second consecutive pre-flop all in holding Jack of Clubs 8 of Hearts to Larochelle’s 10 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts.

A 5-way final table is formed

With Mitcheal Ferguson‘s elimination in 6th place, the Mix Max Event is now down to 5 players. These 5 players took a short break, which allowed us to take full finalist counts:

With the elimination of Christian Rho in ninth place, the Mix Max is down to the final two tables with 8 players left in the running.

The last level provided an unfamiliar sight in the tournament hall; three tables playing three-handed. The final nine players approached the short-handed format with caution. Most pots were played out pre-flop or ended on the flop with a continuation-bet. Eventually, two strong hands collided and the players wound up all in before the flop. Christian Rho’s Ace of Spades 9 of Clubs could not improve to beat Claude Amar‘s Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades, sending Rho to the rail in ninth place, earning him $200 in the process.

Only 10 players remain in the Mix Max, as the action continues with four-handed play.

The players achieved consensus on a deal that saw some prize money removed from the top three position in order to pay the eleventh place finisher $130.

Although the action stopped briefly so the players could negotiate, the deal they made-and the short-handed format-ensured that the action would keep moving at a brisk pace. And it didn’t take long for the next player, Lyoubi Salaheddine, to hit the rail, as he busted on the very next hand.

    Huge pot for Larochelle

Francois Meloche has to start looking over his shoulder, as Benoit Larochelle Legrand just took down a huge pot to bring his stack up to the heights on Meloche had attained at the last break. Larochelle now rivals Meloche at the top of the leaderboard, and the two big stacks are playing at the same table.

Larochelle scored a big double up shortly before the last break to climb up the leader board, and by eliminating Karl Laliberte in a battle of the blinds he made another big addition to his stack.

Laliberte opened the pre-flop action from the small blind, and Larochelle defended. When the flop fell 5 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts Ace of Spades, Laliberte fired a big continuation-bet of 17,000. Larochelle immediately raised all in, and Laliberte snap called, triumphantly tabling Ace of Clubs Jack of Clubs. Larochelle quietly rolled over his Ace of Hearts 5 of Clubs, and the players watched the 2 of Hearts and 3 of Diamonds roll off the deck. Larochelle’s aces-up stood, and Laliberte splashed his stacks across the table in frustration before making his exit.

Larochelle is now playing a stack of slightly more than 200,000 in chips.
