    Event #2 Champion: Sebastien Drolet-Poitras

    2018/07/31 - 2:14 by Shawn McCrory

The latest edition of the Playground 200 brought out 698 entries over the course of the July Power Weekend. The huge field built a prize pool that easily exceeded the $100,000 guarantee. There were 21 players remaining when play began on Day 3, led by Co Tran who started the evening with the largest stack in play.

The players arrived looking determined, seemingly unfazed by the boisterous mood in the tournament hall as 6-Max Bounty got underway. The 21 finalists started on three tables that quickly became two following the eliminations in the first two levels of play. Co Tran’s chip lead began to fade as Steve Horic started his rise to the top of the leader board.

Once the players arrived at the final table, Horic had a slim chip lead over his rivals. And he continued the solid play that got him to the top of the leader board over the course of the next few levels, however, our eventual champion, Sebastien Drolet-Poitras came on strong in the late stages.

It was a rough start to the final table for Drolet-Poitras, having lost a big heads-up pot to Horic in the early going. But he maintained his resolve and stayed focused on his goal. He kept himself out of harm’s way during the early eliminations and then started making some hands as they got into the late stages. Although Steve Horic also eliminated a number of players at the final table, the players busted by Drolet-Poitras had the larger stacks so by the time they arrived against each other to play heads up, Drolet-Poitras had a slim chip lead.

Drolet-Poitras and Horic agreed to an ICM chop before heads-up play began, with a small portion of the prize pool reserved for the outright winner. And it was Drolet-Poitras who immediately took charge. The turning point of the heads-up match came early on when Drolet-Poitras was able to elicit a call from a huge river value bet, holding 9 of Clubs 4 of Clubs on a board of 8 of Hearts 9 of Spades 4 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs 3 of Spades. After that hand, Drolet-Poitras had a massive chip lead, one that he would not relinquish. The two players traded some small pots back and forth before the tournament came to its conclusion following a pre-flop all in when two big hands collided. Horic had the best of it before the flop, but Drolet-Poitras flopped a set to claim victory. Congratulations!

    Event #2 Champion: Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, $22,737

The two finalists in the Playground 200, Sebastien Drolet-Poitras and Steve Horic, have agreed to chop the remaining prize pool. Although Horic was the chip leader throughout most of the play on the final table this evening, Drolet-Poitras ran hot during the late stages and sent several players to the rail to take a narrow chip lead.

According to the terms of their deal, Horic will get $19,435 and Drolet-Poitras will pocket $20,037. Play continues as there is still $2,700 on the line for the eventual winner.

Three players have hit the rail in short succession at the final table of the Playground 200.

Maxime Marcouiller made a good call on his final hand but got a bad result. In a heads-up pot against Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, Marcouiller was in position and made a big call with his tournament life on the line. The flop fell 2 of Hearts 3 of Clubs Jack of Hearts, and Drolet-Poitras, who was the first to act and playing the bigger stack, moved all in. Marcouiller went in to the tank, counted his chips and started going over the possibilities. After a few agonizing moments, Marcouiller pushed his stack forward and slammed his King of Clubs Jack of Spades on the table. Drolet-Poitras rolled over King of Hearts 5 of Hearts, and they both watched for the turn in anticipation. It fell the 8 of Hearts, completing the flush draw, and Marcouiller knew his run was over. He was already on his way to the tournament desk when the 8 of Diamonds fell on the river. Marcouiller will take home $6,290 for his fifth place finish.

Carl Lafontaine was the next player eliminated. On his final hand, Steve Horic opened the action as the first to act, and Lafontaine moved all in with his short stack. The other players got out of the way, bringing the action back to Horic who quickly tossed a chip in the middle. It was 5 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts for Horic and Ace of Clubs 2 of Spades for Lafontaine. The 7 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts flop favoured Horic and although the 2 of Hearts turn gave Lafontaine some hope, the Jack of Diamonds river gave the pot to Horic. Lafontaine earned $8,240 for the deep run.

Jean-Rene Guay finished in third place, busting on the hand following Lafontaine’s elimination. Guay was down to a very short stack, and he moved all in from the button with King of Spades 6 of Spades. Unfortunately for him, the big blind woke up with a strong hand, and Sebastien Drolet-Poitras made the call with King of Clubs Queen of Spades. Drolet-Poitras took a commanding lead on the Queen of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 4 of Diamonds flop, one that he would not relinquish. The 3 of Spades turn and King of Hearts river confirmed the situation on the flop, and Guay was eliminated in third place. He will take home $11,210 for the podium finish.

    Rouselle eliminated in sixth

Now that the blinds have reached 60K/120K, all but the biggest stacks are beginning to feel the pressure. Kevin Rouselle was down under ten big blinds and decided it was the time to try to collect some chips. He moved all in from the cut-off with Queen of Hearts 8 of Hearts, but the chip leader, Steve Horic, was waiting in the blinds. After asking for the count, Horic made the call and tabled Ace of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds. The board, King of Diamonds 4 of Clubs Ace of Hearts 4 of Spades 7 of Diamonds, ran out in Horic’s favour, as many of them have this evening, and Rouselle was eliminated in sixth place, good for $5,010.

    Mcdermott busts seventh

James Mcdermott’s in the Playground 200 has just ended. As the blinds reached 60K/120K, Mcdermott was all in before the flop against Carl Lafontaine. Mcdermott’s Ace of Hearts 10 of Hearts was ahead of Lafontaine’s King of Spades Jack of Hearts when the chips went in, but the board was in Lafontaine’s favour. The flop, 7 of Spades Queen of Clubs 10 of Spades, gave Lafontaine an open-ended straight draw, and it came in on the turn when the 9 of Clubs hit the table. The 3 of Spades river card was a formality, and Mcdermott rose to collect his $4,150 payout.

Dominique Dion’s run at the final table has just ended. Dion’s Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds fell to Steve Horic’s King of Hearts Jack of Hearts. The flop, 10 of Hearts 3 of Hearts 7 of Diamonds, put Dion in the lead, but he was unable to fade his opponent’s outs. The 2 of Diamonds turn improved Dion’s hand, but the 6 of Hearts river gave his opponent the flush, sending him off the final table in eighth place. Dion will take home $3,300 for the final table appearance.

The players have just returned to the table following their latest break, and Steve Horic is still in the driver’s seat with a substantial chip lead over his nearest rival Sebastien Drolet-Poitras.
