    Event #5 Champion: Jean-Francois M

    2018/07/29 - 4:34 by Shawn McCrory

Event #5 of the July Power Weekend, the $100 + $20 + $100 50/50 Bounty, drew an impressive turnout of 214 players. Showing the consistent popularity of Power Weekend bounty tournaments, this event generated a prize pool that far exceeded the $20,000 guarantee.

The early levels were predictably wild, with lots of multi-way all ins and plenty of huge pots. There were nearly 200 entries when the first break arrived and a rush of players to the cashier brought the total number to 214 before play resumed. 40 players were eliminated prior to the first break, and the action continued at a frantic pace right through to the second break of the evening.

David Ho jumped out to an early lead, but he ran out of steam around the time of the second break. From there Andre Piunno rose to the top of the leader board with Yan Gohier right behind him. Piunno and Gohier managed to maintain the largest stacks in the field all the way to the final table. The only lull in the action this evening was the hand-for-hand play on the money bubble, but it was brief by comparative standards, and the action quickly got back up to speed.

When the final table was down to its last four players, Jean-Francois M, Georges Rombotis, Yan Gohier and Elie B, they negotiated a deal that divided the prize pool and took the bounty chips out of play. Jean-Francois and Yan each received $2,500, while Elie and Georges took $3,100, leaving an extra $406 for the winner.

Jean-Francois M built a big stack in the middle stages of the tournament and then went on a roller coaster in the late stages. He went from playing a stack that was well above average to being all in with only a handful of blinds when the field was down to two tables. After losing a huge pot, Jean-Francois was, in his words, “on tilt” and moved all in blind out of turn. After being cautioned by the dealer, he waited his turn and moved all in blind nonetheless. He managed to make a full house with 8 of Diamonds 3 of Hearts in what was the start of an epic comeback. From there, he won pot after pot and made his way to the final table with an above-average stack. After the players chopped the prize pool at the final table, Jean-Francois eliminated each of them in turn to complete a remarkable comeback to claim victory. Congratulations!

Marzan out in sixth, Piunno busts fifth

    M. Marzan has been eliminated in sixth place. He waited patiently at the final table, moving all in when he finally got a premium hand, but his Ace of Diamonds Jack of Hearts ran into Elie B’s pocket kings. The board offered no help for Marzan’s hand, and he hit the rail in fifth place, taking home $970 in the process.

Andre Piunno, the longtime chip leader in this event, busted in fifth place at the hands of Georges Rombotis. Piunno was down to a relatively short stack and wound up all in with King of Diamonds Queen of Spades against Rombotis’ Ace of Clubs 5 of Diamonds. The board, 6 of Spades Jack of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts :jh, let ace high stand, sending Piunno to the rail in fifth, earning him $970 in the process.

The final table is now underway. After a short lull in the action, there was a flurry of bust outs

Nicolas Belanger arrived at the final table with the shortest stack in play. He was eliminated in the first orbit when he ran his Queen of Hearts 9 of Clubs into Georges Rombotis‘ Ace of Clubs Jack of Spades in a pre-flop all in. Belanger collected $420 for his tenth place finish.

Daniel Mercier was eliminated in ninth shortly after Belanger, relinquishing his bounty to Jean-Francois M when Jean-Francois’ ace-high was good at showdown. Mercier took home $490 for the deep run.

Aaron Shepard was sent to the rail by Elie B after the two players wound up all in before the flop. Elie’s pocket queens stood against Shepard’s King of Clubs Jack of Hearts. Shepard collected $590 for his final table appearance.

Tina S was the next to leave the final table when she fell victim to a cooler spot, running big slick into pocket kings held by Georges Rombotis. It was another pre-flop all in, but the board did not provide an ace to keep Tina’s tournament run alive. She took home $680 for the seventh place finish.

The field in the 50/50 Bounty is down to its final dozen, two eliminations away from the final table.

Andre Piunno still has the largest stack in play, but as the blinds creep so do the swings. Just ask Jean-Francois M. Jean-Francois went from having a top-five stack to being all in with only a few 1K chips behind within only a few orbits, but he has since found a way to build his stack back up to above average and collected a few bounties in the process.

Here’s a look at some of the remaining players:

    Piunno still on top

The players are off on their latest break, and Andre Piunno still holds a significant chip lead over the field.

The money bubble burst shortly before the break, leading to a steady stream of bust outs once the players reached the money, taking the field from 27 down to 18 players. Aaron Shepard was one of the chief beneficiaries, taking his relatively small stack to the second largest in the field within a few orbits, however, he still has a way to go to catch up to Piunno, who has held the chip lead for the last several levels.

The money bubble has just burst on the 50/50 Bounty.

Yan Gohier continues to stack up chips after taking down the three-way three-bet pot to send Bedros Arzouhaljian to the rail in 28th place. Gohier checked the King of Spades 6 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds flop, and Arzouhaljian moved all in to force Aaron Shepard out of the way before Gohier triumphantly called with top set. Arzouhaljian was drawing very thin, holding Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs, and the Jack of Hearts turn provided some hope but the river did not provide.

The rest of the field is now in the money, with $4,906 waiting for the eventual winner.
