The first Power Weekend offering of a short deck format has brought out an impressive field of 139 entries. By the time the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the re-entry period, there were 46 re-entries into this action-heavy tournament.

The wild early action let many players build huge stacks, with lots of players playing more than double the current chip average. But everyone in the field still has a legitimate shot at taking this one down.

The Short Deck Re-entry is off to a great start with 132 entries, including 40 re-entries, with nearly 20 minutes left in the late registration and re-entry period.

The players have quickly adjusted their strategies from traditional hold’em, realizing that the equity calculations on all types of draws have changed significantly. The players have also embraced the re-entry format, as the pre-flop action is playing far looser than most players are accustomed to seeing everyone realizes that they are only one hand away from potentially multiplying their stack, re-entering has become more appealing than in traditional hold’em events.

As the clock winds down on our fourth level of play, the number of entries has just eclipsed the century mark, with 79 players remaining from 104 entries. This action-inducing format is living up to its reputation, as 18 players have already opted to re-enter.

Here’s another look at the field:

The players continue to file in to take their seats as we enter the third level of play. The Short Deck has drawn 59 entries so far, including two re-entries. This is a new format for most players so it comes as no surprise that it is dominating the conversations heard around the tables. Everyone is wondering if they will adapt their hold’em strategy correctly, but only time will tell.

Here comes the Short Deck Re-entry!

    2018/07/29 - 18:58 by Shawn McCrory

Event #7 of the July Power Weekend, the $100 + $10 NL Short Deck Hold’em Re-Entry is about to get underway.

The Short Deck is a new addition to the Power Weekend roster, and there is lots of anticipation surrounding this format. The tournament will be played without the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s, making for a 36-card deck. And it also comes with a few variations on the traditional hold’em hand rankings; a flush now beats a full house, but the ace still completes the low straight, meaning that A-6-7-8-9 becomes the new “wheel.” Aside from that, all the familiar hold’em rules apply.

Tonight’s event guarantees a prize pool of $8,000 and will start players with a 20,000 chip stack. Late registration and unlimited re-entries will be available until the beginning of the seventh level of play.

    Good luck to all!
