Yvon Robert Blais wins Event #8

    2018/07/30 - 20:20 by

Yvon Robert Blais has emerged as the champion of Event #8 in the July Power Weekend, beating Steve Khoury heads up to book the victory. As we posted earlier, after a deal was made 5-way, play didn’t budge for at least a few orbits of the table – but when the first of the final 5 was eliminated, the next two followed, one hand after the other.

This left Yvon with a big chip lead against Steve to play for the win. They played a few hands and exchanged some chips, but with the next tournament starting and blinds feeling very high to both players, they chose to go all-in blind on the last hand – and despite his lowly 4 of Spades 7 of Clubs, Yvon won the hand, and the championship, against Steve’s King of Diamonds 3 of Clubs. The final board was Jack of Spades 5 of Spades 4 of Clubs 9 of Hearts Jack of Hearts.

With just 5 players left and an even chop deal in place, somehow the remaining players found a way to play 4-5 orbits before the next elimination. There was a lot of passive play with 4 or 5 players taking a flop, plus a few short-stacks that doubled up… but in the middle of everything, Steve Khoury was chipping up in a big way, and taking lots of those chips from Denis Lafrenière.

He was eliminated on a hand opened by Alexandre Joly with a raise to 40K. Yvon Robert Blais called, and Denis went all-in over the top – but for less than 100K in chips. Alexandre folded quickly enough – but Yvon Robert called and turned over the 9 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds – ahead of Denis’ 8 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs.

The community cards came as follows: :6H 6 of Diamonds King of Clubs 7 of Hearts :5k – no help for the eights and Lafreniere hit the rail.

In the hands immediately following, Steven Taylor and Alexandre Joly also found themselves at the short end of an all-in and call – and play moved to HU without any further delay.

    5th place: Denis Lafrenière, $770

    4th place: Steven Taylor, $770

    3rd place: Alexandre Joly, $770

The remaining 5 players in Event #8 were quickly able to agree to a deal in which they reserved $155 for first place and split the entire rest of the prize pool into equal $770 slices. Play continues with the button ante halved due to the short-handed status of this final table.

Stephane Desrosiers has been eliminated in 7th place following a classic poker hand – Aces against Kings. Steven Taylor opened the action with a utg raise to 25K, which was met with a raise to 100K from Stephane. Yvon Robert Blais re-raised all-in with his covering stack, the blinds folded and after just a second of hesitation, Steven folded. Stephane quickly made the call and the hole cards were exposed.

Stephane: King of Spades King of Clubs
Yvon Robert: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts

There wasn’t much of anything on the flop: 8 of Spades 4 of Hearts 6 of Spades although the two spades were better than nothing for Stephane’s King of Spades. The Ace of Spades on the turn was a mixed bag but the Jack of Diamonds on the river sealed the deal – Stephane was out in 7th.

Since this elimination, Jean-Christophe Surette was eliminated in 6th, however we were not present for the fateful hand.

    7th place: Stephane Desrosiers, $220

    6th place: Jean-Christophe Surette, $250
