McKinnon does it again in Event #12

    2018/10/08 - 20:30 by

Michael McKinnon has done it again! The winner of Event #4 in this October Power Weekend has now added a second Power Weekend Championship to his list of successes here at Playground Poker Club – he has won Event #12, today’s $90 + $10 + $25 NL Hold’em Bounty tournament.

The event attracted 128 players, far surpassing the number required to meet the $5,000 guaranteed prize pool. The solid turnout for the event was matched by the speed it took to play – even with so many players to start, the tournament was in the money by about 5:30pm and the final two tables continued at a steady pace such that the whole tournament was over just after 8:00pm.

Heads up play between Michael and Steve Daunier was very interesting, in that Steve had been among the chip leaders for most of the afternoon, and coming to 1-on-1 play, enjoyed about a 10:1 chip advantage. No one was holding the cards too tightly by that point, however, and it didn’t take long for Michael to chip away at the lead and eventually to move into the lead himself – by a small margin. Counts were so close by the final hand that it was only determined after the full hand runout who had been at risk.

The hand itself was quite conventional. Michael raised all-in from the button/sb and Steve – though sensing he was weak – nevertheless made the call.

Michael: Ace of Spades 10 of Clubs
Steve: Ace of Diamonds 3 of Spades

Steve hadn’t gotten this far by relying on miracles, and there was no miracle in store for him in this hand. The board ran out Queen of Clubs 5 of Spades Jack of Clubs 6 of Diamonds 8 of Spades and Michael’s Ace-Ten high gave him the win! And when the stacks were counted down, we all found out that Michael had the lead – and now had all of the chis! Congratulations!

Event #12 Champion: Michael McKinnon, $1,803

Steve Daunais has taken out another player – Luc G this time – and play is now heads up between Steve and Michael McKinnon.

Luc got it in with Queen of Diamonds 8 of Spades and Steve insta-called holding Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs.

The board run-out was 7 of Clubs 7 of Spades 10 of Spades 5 of Spades (pause) 2 of Diamonds and Steve’s Ace-high won the hand. Play then moved to the final heads up phase of the tournament!

The remaining 5 players have made a deal. They are withholding $223 for first place and the rest of the prize pool was distributed according to chip counts at the time. The deal was reached quickly and without any argument. In addition, each player will now keep their own bounty chip.

As soon as the deal was agreed to, Philippe Belley let it be known that due to an emergency, he had to leave immediately. In this case, because the deal was made for almost all of the prize pool equity, his stack was simply removed from play rather than being blinded off or anything of that nature.

The second hand of play after the deal was done and play resumed saw Samuel Brouillard eliminated as he open shoved utg into Steve Daunais’ Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts holding just King of Hearts 10 of Clubs – the community cards changed nothing and there are just three players left.

Samuel Brouillard raised all-in from utg and the player to his left, Hugo Fontaine, didn’t hesitate before shoving as well. Everyone else folded and the situation looked good for Hugo: King of Clubs King of Diamonds against Samuel’s Ace of Diamonds 9 of Spades.

The flop was safe enough as well: 5 of Spades 7 of Spades 3 of Diamonds. The 3 of Spades on the turn had Hugo’s full attention… but the Jack of Spades on the river was a heartbreaker for Hugo, who was visibly disappointed. Samuel yelled enthusiastically at his luck – but seconds later came to shake Hugo’s hand in recognition of the bad beat. When stacks were counted down, Hugo was covered and out in 7th place.

    7th place: Hugo Fontaine, $480
