    McKinnon wins the Deepstack Turbo

    2018/10/04 - 19:55 by

After over 7 hours of play, Michael McKinnon has emerged as the Champion of Event #4 in the October Power Weekend – the $100 + $10 Deepstack Turbo Re-entry. For long periods of play it looked like other results were practically guaranteed – both Gary Lucci and George Iliacopoulos looked to have insurmountable leads – but Michael persevered and managed to come out on top!

The final act in the tournament started with three players remaining, after a deal had been struck and Mario was removed in the first hand following the deal. This set up a stretch of almost two full levels that were played 3-way between George, Michael, and Franco Casarcia. At this point, George had an overwhelming chip lead and it seemed that the players were simply “playing out the string” to borrow a term from the baseball world.

Eventually, Franco’s stack had dwindled to almost nothing and he went all-in on the button holding just 9 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds. Amazingly, he was in the lead – George called with 6 of Clubs 4 of Spades! George hit right on the flop of 4 of Clubs Jack of Clubs 8 of Clubs, however, and Franco’s best hope was for a fourth club to appear. The Queen of Hearts Ace of Spades turn and river were not cards that helped him, and George’s pair of Fours was good.

Heads up play lasted for under 10 hands. After a hand that saw three cards to a wheel on the board, action went crazy and there was an all-in and a call on the river… but upon showdown, we learned that both players had been playing 4-3 off all along and both had made the straight! Chop it up!

A couple of hands later was the definitive hand of the tournament, however. Michael was in the bb so George was first to act – and he kept things simple and just said all-in – only to be surprised by a snap call from Michael.

George: King of Diamonds 2 of Clubs
Michael: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts

Michael’s pocket Aces held on the 10 of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 4 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds board and he doubled up – and was now the clear leader in the tournament. It didn’t take long to play out after that. About 3 hands later Michael open shoved his big stack from the sb/button and George made the call.

George: Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades
Michael: King of Hearts Jack of Diamonds

George had the lead… but not for long. The flop came 9 of Spades Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades – trips for Michael! There were no miracles on the 2 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds turn and river, and the tournament was over!

    Congratulations!

Event #4 Champion: Michael McKinnon, $1,420

The four remaining players have agreed on an ICM chop, reserving $160 for the eventual winner and locking in the rest of the payouts by agreement.

    The payouts:

    • George: $1,700
    • Mario: $995
    • Franco: $835
    • Michael: $1,260

Just one hand after the deal was agreed upon, Mario hit the rail in 4th place.

The two big stacks on the final table just tangled, and Gary Lucci was on the wrong end of things and he has been eliminated in 5th place despite holding on to a top-3 stack for the past couple of hours!

First the scene was set as George Iliacopoulos did a fine job of chipping up to move from being one of the short-stacks in the event all the way to chip leader with 6 left. He barely covered Gary, bt both of them had a big advantage over all 3 of the other remaining players.

When the fateful hand arrived, Gary simply open shoved from early position – only to find a reshove from George, who was directly to his left in poker terms, but at the other end of the table in actual fact. Everyone else folded and the cards were turned over.

Gary: Ace of Spades 5 of Clubs
George: Ace of Clubs Ace of Hearts

George had the pocket rockets – and Gary was drawing extremely thin.

The board had not a glimmer of hope for Gary: 6 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds Jack of Hearts Jack of Spades and he hit the rail in 5th. George, meanwhile, had just a shade under 1M of the 1.75M total chips in play.

    5th place: Gary Lucci, $460

Several players on this final table would prefer not to have their photo published, so we’re a little limited compared to most final tables.

While we were preparing these photos, Cadillac was eliminated in 6th place, leaving just 5 players remaining.

Alberto Scuderi is a frequent final tableist in Playground events, but he found himself uncomfortably short and all in with just 11K – but then a double up and a steal of the blinds and he was back in some health…

Until this hand, against Michael McKinnon. After “normal” preflop action, the dealer laid out 8 of Hearts Queen of Spades 3 of Diamonds. Alberto put out a small c-bet, and Michael raised, getting a reaction from Alberto suggesting he wasn’t at all happy… but that he was all in for his remaining stack. Michael made a very quick call and Alberto showed his 8 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts while Michael flipped Ace of Clubs Ace of Hearts. There was no help left in the deck for Alberto as a pair of Fives came on the turn and river. Alberto headed to the Tournament Desk to pick up his payout coupon.

With the final table set at 10 players, even as the new table arrangement was being displayed on screen, the 10 managed to find an easy deal to give $200 to the player who would be eliminated in 10th, thus eliminating the bubble.

The players then took their seats as described in the following table… and in a short period of time, short-stacked players Marco Trinchini and Francis Gelinas were both eliminated, and a few minutes later Ginette Plourde joined them on the rail.

Play continues with 7 players and the min-cash from here is $310.
