    The Seniors’ Champion: James McDermott

    2018/10/05 - 20:22 by

After a tough and relatively long heads up battle, James McDermott has emerged victorious over Sharrol Segal. Segal, from Vancouver, played a great match, but McDermott (from the Ottawa area) was able to take it down in a two-hand process.

The first step on his way to victory came after about 20 hands of heads up play – Sharrol had a clear stack size edge at the time. James was in the small blind and flat called, and Sharrol took the opportunity to go all in. James called and the cards were exposed.

James: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Clubs
Sharrol: Ace of Spades 9 of Diamonds

Community cards: King of Spades 6 of Spades 2 of Hearts 7 of Hearts 8 of Hearts

Over 500K in chips were shipped over to James, and Sharrol was left quite short-stacked – playing just over 200K. A couple of hands later, Sharrol went all-in from the button and James made the call.

Sharrol: Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts
James: Jack of Spades 2 of Spades

James hit right in the window – the flop came 6 of Spades 6 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs. And no help was coming to save Sharrol – the turn was 4 of Diamonds and the river was 8 of Spades. And just like that, James McDermott added an extra $200 to the prize he had already agreed to in the ICM deal.

    Congratulations!

Event #5 Champion: James McDermott, $1,745

Just one or two hands following Steve’s exit, Arnie Maloney was eliminated by James McDermott.

In his final hand, Arnie raised from the button to 75K and James re-raised all-in. Sharrol Segal folded, and after a little thought, Arnie made the call.

James: 4 of Clubs 4 of Spades
Arnie: King of Spades Jack of Diamonds

The pocket pair held once more on the 6 of Hearts 7 of Spades 5 of Diamonds Ace of Spades 10 of Clubs board and once the stacks were counted down (the two players were close in stack size), James had him covered.

James and Sharrol will now play heads up for the victory!

    3rd place: Arnie Maloney, $1,345

The Seniors’ Tournament is down to 3-way play as Steve Taylor has been eliminated in 4th place. Steve opened the action with an all-in from utg and Sharrol Segal shoved over the top to isolate from the sb. Arnie Maloney folded.

Steve: Ace of Spades Queen of Diamonds
Sharrol: King of Clubs King of Hearts

The Kings held on the board that read Queen of Spades 7 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 6 of Spades

    4th place: Steve Taylor, $1,450

    Next to go: Andre Vezina

    2018/10/05 - 18:31 by

With the deal having been made, play is a little looser but that’s not to say people aren’t looking for good spots. In any case, Andre Vezina had been nursing a short stack for quite a while now, and as soon as his payout was locked up by the deal he was looking for a spot.

He finally found it playing the button 5-way, but when he said “all-in,” Steve Taylor, to his immediate left, repeated “all-in” instantly. Sharrol folded and the action was closed.

Andre: Ace of Hearts 4 of Spades
Steve: 6 of Spades 6 of Hearts

Andre made a pair on the 4 of Clubs 8 of Hearts 8 of Clubs flop but couldn’t improve through either the 10 of Spades turn or 5 of Diamonds river and Steve’s Sixes held up.

    5th place: Andre Vezina, $1,140

Ariel Sherker has been eliminated in 6th place by Arnie Maloney. Her final hand saw her 8 of Hearts 10 of Hearts up against Arnie’s Ace of Clubs 6 of Hearts. Arnie was good on the 7 of Spades Queen of Clubs Jack of Spades 6 of Clubs Queen of Hearts board. Arnie is now playing upwards of 350K while Ariel will have to be content with the $1,215 payout she won.

The 6 remaining players asked the floor to pause the clock to discuss a deal, and after a few moments it was agreed that they should get full accurate chip counts (see table below) and ask the floor to prepare payout numbers based on a standard ICM chop. $200 must be reserved for the winner and play will continue until there was a champion, but once the numbers came back, all 6 players quickly agreed.

    ICM Chop payout amounts:

    Andre Vezina – $1,140
    Steve Taylor – $1,450
    James McDermott – $1,545
    Sharrol Alana Segal – $1,965
    Ariel Sherker – $1,250
    Arnie Maloney – $1,345

Play continues with $200 remaining for the eventual winner.
