    Event #6 Champion: Stefano Parisé

    2018/10/05 - 21:41 by Shawn McCrory

Event #6 of the October Power Weekend, the Megastack Turbo Re-entry, had a robust turnout of 86 entries. The huge starting stack of 50,000 in chips was immensely appealing and helped create some wild action in the early levels. Given the number of chips and the turbo format, the players sprinted out of the gate and put those chips to work. There was no shortage of huge opening bets and raises, enough to even bring about 11 re-entries before the end of the late registration and re-entry period.

Trevor Dixon jumped out to the early lead, but he saw the cards turn against him following the first break and ended up busting in the middle of the pack. Anderson Frank-Graham had his turn in the driver’s seat at the second break, but he was soon overtaken by our eventual champion, Stefano Parisé.

Parisé had a healthy stack from the early levels, but the turning point for him arrived in the fourteenth level of play when he took down a massive four-way all in pot to catapult his way in to the chip lead. It turned out to be a lead he would not relinquish, as he had the biggest stack in play all the way to the end of the tournament. He picked his spots carefully (and successfully) in the late stages and found ways to steadily increase his stack.

Once play began at the final table, Parisé’s chip lead had narrowed significantly. But he quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field once again when he eliminated Fabien Domenech, who had one of the larger stacks in play, in the first orbit. At that stage, Parisé had a huge chip lead, and he stayed out of the fray as the other players gradually eliminated each other. When it came down to the final three – Parisé, Joshua Caballero and Joshua Peteigney – two big hands collided, and Parisé eliminated Caballero following a huge flip where his pocket jacks held against Caballero’s ace-king.

Parisé had a gigantic chip advantage over Peteigney when heads-up play began, leading by more than a 10:1 margin. Despite doubling up Peteigney early on, Parisé was never at risk. In the end, it came down to a classic race in a pre-flop all in, and one of Parisé’s over cards to Peteigney’s pair connected with the board to seal the victory.

It turned out to be a good showing for Peteigney who made his first ever cash at a Power Weekend event, taking home $1,508 as the runner-up. But this was truly Parisé’s day, congratulations to our Megastack champion!

Event #6 Champion: Stefano Parisé, $2,072

Joshua Caballero had an afternoon of solid play end on the wrong side of a flip.

With the Megastack down to three players, Caballero woke up with big slick. Unfortunately for him, the chip leader, Stefano Parise also had a monster hand with pocket jacks. An inevitable pre-flop all in followed, and the pocket jacks held to send Caballero to the rail in third place.

Caballero will take home $1,210 for the podium finish.

    Coursol out in fourth

    • Level: 25
    • Small Blind: 30K
    • Big Blind: 60K
    • Button Ante: 30K
    • Chip Average: 1.43M

Olivier Coursol’s run in the Megastack has just come to an end, and chip leader, Stefano Parise, was the lucky recipient of his stack.

The two players were involved in a heads-up pot and saw a flop of Queen of Spades Jack of Diamonds 10 of Hearts. Coursol saw an opportunity to take his opponent of his hand, but he underestimated the strength of Parise’s hand. The two got it all in on the flop, and Coursol found out that his Jack of Hearts 3 of Spades was far behind Parise’s Queen of Clubs 10 of Diamonds. Knowing that he was drawing thin, Coursol rose from the table as the Ace of Spades fell on the turn, followed be the 6 of Hearts on the river.

Coursol will take home $920 for his fourth place finish.

Caballero sends Macri to the rail

    • Level: 24
    • Small Blind: 25K
    • Big Blind: 50K
    • Button Ante: 25K
    • Chip Average: 1.08M
    • Remaining: 4

Domenico Macri, the short stack on the table, was running out of options. When the action folded to him on the button, he decided it was time to take a chance. He would either steal the blinds, double up or make his exit. Unfortunately for him, the big blind, Joshua Caballero, woke up with a big hand, making Macri more likely to be eliminated than any of the other options.

Macri moved all in from his button with pocket twos. But Caballero looked down at pocket eights and quickly made the call. There was no set or helpful run out to save Macri, and Caballero’s pocket pair stood, sending Macri to the rail in sixth place.

Macri will pocket $540 for the deep run.

    Domenech out in tenth

    • Level: 9
    • Small Blind: 15K
    • Big Blind: 30K
    • Button Ante: 30K
    • Chip Average: 478K
    • Remaining: 9
    • Entries: 86

Fabien Domenech saw a dream flop turn into a poker nightmare on the first orbit of the final table.

It was a heads-up pot between Domenech and Stefano Parise. The flop fell 10 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds, and Domenech checked to Parise. Parise opted to take the betting lead and fired a modest bet, which Domenech quickly called. The turn brought the 5 of Hearts and the action was the same as the flop, however, Parise put out a much more aggressive bet this time. When the 6 of Spades fell on the river, Domenech checked once again, opening the door for Parise. Parise put Domenech to the test by moving all in. Domenech reacted with disgust and mulled over his decision. After a short while in the tank, Domenech made the call, and Parise saw one of the few hands he didn’t want to see. Parise tabled 5 of Spades 6 of Clubs for a rivered full house, and Domenech showed flopped flush with King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds before pushing his remaining chips across the table.

Domenech will collect $180 for his tenth place finish.

The remaining players in the Megastack are now all in the money.

Dominic Janvier was unlucky on his final hand, having got his chips in good but coming away empty handed.

With the blinds at 10K/20K, the action was opened from under the gun by Olivier Coursol to 50K. Janvier, immediately to Coursol’s left, moved all in for his last 70K. Fabien Domenech, in the big blind, made the call, as did Coursol. Coursol and Domenech quickly checked the flop and turn, but when Domenech led out with a 100K bet on the river, Janvier got a sense of what he was about to see. Coursol folded, and Domenech tabled pockets sixes for a full house, good enough to send Janiver and his pocket queens to the rail.

The players are now making their way to the final table and the action will resume shortly.
