Event 10 Champion: Riyaz Abdulla

2016/02/10 - 1:15 by Playground Poker

Event 10 Champion: Riyaz Abdulla

Riyaz Abdulla almost didn’t play in Event 10 of the TonyBet Winter Festival, as he was in transit from London that same day and arrived at Playground Poker Club just in the nick of time to late-register himself into the tournament. Fast-forward 2 long nights of poker later, and the jet-lagged traveller was sitting in the driver seat on the final table, on the road to victory.

Riyaz came into Day 2 as one of the bigger stacks, and maintained a healthy chip count throughout the entire night, taking over the chip lead in the later stages of the final table. When play fell to 4-handed, a ICM based deal was made which awarded him $11,695, leaving an additional $1,280 for the eventual winner. Chip leader at the time of the deal Shaan Siddiqui locked in $12,415, while shorter stack Todd Pierce guaranteed himself $8,740 and Viken Artinian took $8,300.

It didn’t take long before Riyaz knocked out two opponents to find himself heads-up with the chip lead versus Shaan, and heads-up play was an even shorter affair, as Riyaz managed to eliminate his opponent on the very first hand.

On a board showing 3 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts 8 of Clubs, Riyaz check-raised his opponent, and then happily called off the 3bet all-in holding the stone cold nuts. His 7 of Diamonds 9 of Spades only had 4 full house outs to dodge versus his opponents 5 of Spades 6 of Hearts, and the river 10 of Clubs sealed the deal. With that, Riyaz collected the extra $1,280, and was awarded a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy!

Congratulations!

Sitting in the big blind, Todd Pierce called a button-raise from Riyaz to go heads-up to action. Both players rapped the table on the Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades King of Diamonds flop, and Todd then lead out for 70,000 on the 2 of Clubs turn. Riyaz replied with an all-in, but figured he ran into a big hand when Todd made a snap call.

Todd: Jack of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
Riyaz: 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs

Riyaz hit a lucky river, as he spiked his 2-outter on the river 9 of Hearts.

Event 10 is now heads-up between Riyaz Abdulla (around 2,050,000) and Shaan Siddiqui (around 1,275,00).

The final 4 players took a look at the numbers of an ICM chop, and all agreed with what they saw. The tournament requires at least 2% of the total prize pool to be left for the eventual winner, who will also take home a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy, and so in addition to the prizes locked in, they are playing for an extra $1,280.

Here are the prizes they have locked in:

    5th place: Mike Lafable

Mike Lafable placed a raise to 55,000 from the button, and went heads-up to the flop versus Shaan Siddiqui in the big blind. They both checked the 6 of Spades 5 of Clubs Ace of Clubs board, and once the 3 of Hearts turn fell, Shaan lead for 75,000. Mike pushed all-in, and found a quick call.

Shaan tabled Ace of Spades 5 of Hearts for two pair, and only had a few straight and chop outs to dodge, as Mike had Ace of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds. The river 5 of Spades actually improved Shaan’s hand, sending Mike home in 5th place.

Two players have emerged as the dominant chip leaders on this final table of Event 10, as both Shaan Siddiqui and Riyaz Abdulla hold stacks upwards of 1-million, while the other 4 players fall below the 400,000 mark. With the blind levels going up to 12K/24K/a4K, we can expect to see some fireworks in the levels to come, as the pressure of the blinds will be taking a toll on the short stacks.

Facing a utg open by Riyaz and a button all-in from Todd, Mike Lafable looked down at Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs in the big blind, and moved his remaining 310,000 in. Riyaz got out of the way, and Todd, with the bigger stack, tabled 8 of Clubs 8 of Spades.

Mike filled up with his AQ for the second time on this final table, as the board ran Ace of Hearts 9 of Clubs Queen of Hearts 3 of Spades Ace of Spades, crippling Todd to under 100,000 in the process.
