Event 2 Champion: Eric JC Ylagan

2016/02/01 - 2:04 by Playground Poker

Event 2 of the TonyBet Winter Festival was a one-day Shootout event which attracted a total of 82 players. The tournament started with 9 tables of 9 or 10 players each, and players had to win their table in Round 1 in order to move onto Round 2, which was the final table.

The 9 who made their seat for the final table were then guaranteed a cash prize, with the winner set to take home a cool $3,101, as well as a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy. Once play fell 6-handed, the players agreed to make an ICM based chop, leaving the required 2% of the prize pool for the eventual winner. At the time, Shawn Dubeau and Michelle Belliveau were the big stacks, and they locked in $2,100 and $2,000 respectively, while Eric JC Ylagan was the shortest of the stacks, holding a little under 6 big blinds – worth $1,150 at the time of the deal. Eric then proceeded to go on a hot streak, and quickly ramped his stack up to the chip lead, knocking out players left and right in the process.

It didn’t take long before he found himself heads-up with a 3-to-1 chip lead versus Alex Plourde, a battle which only lasted a few hands. Both players found themselves with all their chips in the middle only a few hands into heads-up, in what was virtually a coin flip. Alex held King of Spades 10 of Hearts, and was racing versus the 5 of Hearts 5 of Spades of Eric. With no help on the 4 of Spades Ace of Clubs 3 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs board, Alex was eliminated in 2nd place, while Eric emerged as the champion.

Eric earned an additional $360 for the win, as stipulated by the conditions of the chop, and also took home the stunning TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy.

Congratulations!

Two more eliminations brings us to heads-up

Two more quick eliminations occurred, as Christopher Roger’s Ace of Hearts Jack of Clubs was third-best to Alex Plourde’s 10 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds, who won the side pot, and Eric Ylagan’s King of Spades King of Diamonds, who took the main pot in a 3-way all-in. The board stayed clean for the pair of kings, showing 5 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs 4 of Clubs 4 of Spades Queen of Diamonds.

Eric then went on to eliminate Michelle not even an orbit later to bring this shootout event down to heads-up. He finds himself with a 3-to-1 chip lead over heads-up opponent Alex Plourde, as they play for the remaining $360 and the TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy.

    Post-deal eliminations

Once the deal was made, play opened up considerably, as payouts were virtually all locked in, apart from that of the eventual winner.

Yang Guo was the first to go, and he was followed shortly by Shawn Dubeau, who ran into the pocket rockets of Alex Plourde. Alex now leads with nearly 500,000 in chips, and the other three are fairly close, all holding roughly 300,000 each.

    An agreement has been made!

    An agreement has been made!

As the tournament was on break, the final 6 players started negotiating a potential deal. Stacks were counted, and an ICM deal was proposed, which was accepted by all parties. Given that there is a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy awarded to the winner, the is a clause which forces 2% of the total prize pool to be awarded for the eventual winner, along with the trophy. Players are therefore playing for an additional $360, after locking in the following amounts:

First Name | PrénomLast Name | NomStack | TapisPrize
    ShawnDubeau380,000$2,100
    MichelleBelliveau328,000$2,000

Andrew Forest sent home in 7th

Andrew Forest saw his stack roller-coaster in the last few orbits, and he was in the process of rebuilding himself before ultimately finding himself on the losing end of an all-in versus Alex Plourde.

He raised from the small blind, and called off his remaining chips once Alex announced all-in form the big blind. He turned over Ace of Hearts 7 of Hearts, but was trailing the Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts of Alex, who held on for the win on a 9 of Diamonds King of Hearts King of Spades 3 of Clubs 6 of Spades board.

    7th place: Andrew Forest – $610

When action folded around to Yang Guo in the small blind, he announced he was all-in for a total of 76,200. Eric JC Ylagan was hesitant at first, but after some reflection, he announced “let’s gamble” and slid forward some calling chips.

Yang: Ace of Clubs 8 of Hearts
Eric: King of Spades Queen of Spades

Board: 9 of Spades 10 of Hearts Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades Ace of Diamonds

Eric took the lead on the flop, spiking the top pair, however Yang caught up by running three-of-a-kind to win the pot. Eric saw roughly 1/3 of his stack get shifted towards his neighbour on that hand, but he still holds a healthy stack with 7 players left in action.

With already a considerable amount of chips in the middle following a raising war preflop, Christopher Roger open-shoved the flop from the small blind position in a hand where he was heads-up with Nick Nickoletopoulos, who was on the button. After a moment of consideration, Nick made the call, and both players tabled their hands.

Christopher: Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds
Nick: Jack of Hearts 10 of Spades

Board: 9 of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 10 of Hearts 7 of Clubs 7 of Hearts

Nick had quite a few outs that could give him the win, however the turn and river were both blanks for him. Given he was the shorter of the two stacks, he was eliminated on that hand, ending his tournament in 8th place.

    8th place: Nick Nickoletopoulos – $470

    Rami Hammoud exits in 9th

It only took a few hands before we had our first casualty on this final table of the shootout, as local sharp-shooter Rami Hammoud ran into what could only be described as a cooler versus his neighbour Shawn Dubeau.

We caught up to the action on the turn in a battle of the blinds, as Rami was faced with a check-raise to 39,000 from Shawn on a board showing 8 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts 5 of Clubs 7 of Hearts, after having initially fired 14,000. Rami committed the extra 25,000 in chips, and the two players went on to see a river. When the 7 of Spades fell, Shawn lead out for 50,000, and then quickly called the all-in of Rami, who had him barely covered.

Rami tabled 7 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds for a full house, but found himself second best versus Shawn’s bigger full house, who tabled Queen of Clubs 7 of Clubs. With only a few chips left to his name, Rami was then eliminated by Nick a few hands later, placing 9th.

Rami has proven himself to be a strong competitor here at Playground Poker Club, as he took down The $250 Frenzy during the most recent Playground Poker Fall Classic, topping a massive field of 1,475 players. Unfortunately for him, his hunt for a second Champion’s Trophy fell short on tonight’s attempt.

    9th place: Rami Hammoud – $360
