    6th place: Danny Kalpakis

After losing with a pocket pair of kings himself just a few hands ago, Danny Kalpakis was now the one playing against them, as he 3bet his remaining 375,000 from the big blind following an open from Jessie Wheatley.

Danny: Ace of Clubs 9 of Diamonds
Jessie: King of Spades King of Hearts

Board: 8 of Clubs Ace of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 9 of Spades 3 of Hearts

The kings were second best in the hand once again, but this time it was to Danny’s advantage, as he successfully scored a double-up.

Moments later, Jiachen opened from the hi-jack, and Danny moved in from the cutoff, finding the call.

Danny: Queen of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
Jiachen: Ace of Spades King of Spades

The board ran out 5 of Clubs King of Hearts 5 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts, and Danny’s attempt at a comeback was cut short by Jiachen, who increased his holdings to just above 4,300,000.

    6th place: Danny Kalpakis – $19,600.00

After an open from Grant Pazarka, followed by a 3bet from Danny Kalpakis, a 4bet from Grant, a 5bet all-in from Danny, and a quick call, we could only expect the two players involved in this betting war to open up premium hands – unless of course one of them was up to something funny.

Both players did in fact table monster hands, however it was Grant and his Ace of Clubs Ace of Diamonds who got the best of Danny and his King of Spades King of Diamonds, earning him a double-up worth almost 4,500,000. Grant then went on to win another million or so chips from Jessie Wheatley on the very next hand, putting him in the driver seat at this point in the tournament.

Danny was left with 585,000 behind after losing to Grants pair of aces, while Jessie is down to around 2,200,000. Jiachen is second with roughly 4,200,000, Maxime holds around 1,900,000 and Will sits on just shy of 1,500,000.

Maxime Lejeune Hebert opened to 130,000 from the button, and Jiachen Gong put him to the test by moving all-in from the big blind, last to act. Maxime didn’t flinch and slid forward his stack to represent a call.

Maxime: Ace of Spades Jack of Clubs
Jiachen: 4 of Spades 4 of Clubs

Board: Jack of Diamonds King of Clubs Jack of Hearts 3 of Spades 10 of Spades

With three-of-a-kind, Maxime doubled his 1,055,00 stack, while Jiachen slid down to around 3 million.

Action in the first hand was blind on blind, with Jessie playing from the sb and Maxime Lejeune Hebert in the bb. There was a small raise pre that Max simply called.

Flop: Ace of Diamonds 10 of Clubs 6 of Hearts

Jessie led out for 215K and Max called. The turn was dealt: King of Spades. Jessie led again for 350K and Max folded.

The 6 players remaining in the TonyBet Winter Festival Main event have arrived and un-sealed their chip bags and action is underway! The action today is a continuation of yesterday’s final table, so there hasn’t been an additional redraw and the players are in the same relative positions to one another as they were to end the day yesterday.

Good luck to all 6 players!

    Main Event Day 4 Preview

    Main Event Day 4 Preview

The final day of the Main Event of the TonyBet Winter Festival will begin at 12pm on February 10th when the final 6 players in the field will return to the felts to compete for some truly serious prize money.

There are two front-runners at this late stage in the tournament, chip leader Jiachen Gong and Jessie Wheatley, with 4.555M and 4.045M in chips respectively. Both players start with double the stack of any of the bottom 4 players left in the field, but among those players are some very talented and experienced players in their own right.

Will Molson needs no introduction to poker fans in Quebec – his exploits at the PCA over the years are simply the stuff of legend. Danny Kalpakis is another experienced player, and was the subject of a documentary about the game called simply “Grinders” which came out a couple of years ago. Maxime Hebert doesn’t have a gaudy poker resume, but he is instantly recognized by many players here at Playground because he has been doing well in tournaments here for some time. Grant Pazarka seems to be the wild card of the bunch, but his play – and his banter – today mark him as a player that can do some damage.

So there’s still a lot of poker to be played before a champion is crowned tomorrow. They’re playing for a minimum of $19,600.00 up to a massive $100,000.00 prize for first place. The winner of the event will also win a very handsome Champion’s belt, courtesy of TonyBet.

Good luck to all 6 players tomorrow!

    7th place: Christopher Hudson

    2016/02/09 - 19:29 by

    7th place: Christopher Hudson

Play tonight was scheduled for 7 levels or to play down until 6 players remained, and the level that began after the last break was that 7th level of the day – so either way, by the end of the hour play was set to be suspended for the day. Things in the tournament had slowed down some after the insanity of the hour previous, and eventually Christopher Hudson – who had successfully navigated clear of too much harm previously on the day, found himself short – and then all in. He lost the hand, and the field is reduced to 6 players.

There is no seating redraw for Day 4 – so the final 6 players will return and take the same respective places around the table. Play resumes at 12pm tomorrow!

    7th place: Christopher Hudson, $16,400.00

With the players on a short tournament break, we brought an update on the current chip counts of the final 7 players. Jessie Wheatley has taken control of this final table, and now holds an imposing 4,245,000 chip stack, which more than doubles any other player left in the running. We are but one elimination from having our official final table of 6 players, and should we reach this before the end of the next level, play will go on break until tomorrow’s finale; otherwise Day 3 will end after 1 more level of play.

Here are the current chip counts entering level 28:

First Name | PrénomLast Name | NomSeat | SiègeStack | Tapis

    8th place: Charles-Etienne Gagnon

Action folded around to Jessie Wheatley, who opened to 105,000 from the cutoff. Charles-Etienne Gagnon replied with a 3bet to 310,000 from the button, and was followed by an all-in from Maxime Lejeune Hebert from the small blind. Jessie asked for a count of Maxime’s stack, but finally let go of her hand after the dealer announced it was of 1,175,000. Charles-Etienne quickly made the call, and cards were tabled.

Maxime: Queen of Spades Queen of Diamonds
Charles-Etienne: King of Hearts King of Diamonds

It looked quite bleak for Maxime, until a queen dropped on the river on a board showing 4 of Spades 5 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts. Charles-Etienne was covered by only a margin of 5,000 and was therefore eliminated in the hand, bringing us one elimination away from our official final table of 6.

    8th place: Charles-Etienne Gagnon – $13,020

    9th place: Eric Borduas

Just a couple of hands following the previous elimination, Eric Borduas decided to open all-in for over 900K, only to find a snap shove over the top from Jessie Wheatley sitting directly to his left. Action folded around and Eric was caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Eric: Jack of Hearts 4 of Clubs
Jessie: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Spades

There was no relief for Eric through the community cards: Queen of Clubs Queen of Hearts 2 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds and he was eliminated in 9th place.

    9th place: Eric Borduas, $9,800.00
