Strong pairs keep doing what they do

Two more players have been eliminated as Daniel Johnston and Haguy Cohen have both hit the rail. Both players were facing solid pairs – in Daniel’s case, he was up against Aces and in Haguy’s hand he was up against Queens.

Both players had lots of chips though they weren’t among the leaders, so the other side of the coin for these two hands is that two new players have taken a big late jump in their stack size – always a welcome thing at this point in a tournament!

    25th place: Daniel Johnston, $750

    Aces do it again

Moments after losing Bill Kontaratos to Jeremie Benoit’s Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts, Michel Harvey found himself in a very similar situation, as he 3bet all-in with Ace of Hearts 10 of Clubs versus the Ace of Diamonds Ace of Spades of Andre Dupuis. Michel couldn’t improve with the community cards, and was crippled to a few big blinds. He found himself all-in with pocket 3s two hands later, and was swallowed by the AK of Mathieu Fontaine Raposo.

    26th place: Michel Harvey – $750

    Kontaratos can’t bluff aces

Bill Kontaratos was in the small blind when he 3bet Jeremie Benoit’s utg open pre-flop, and the two players took a walk to first street. With already nearly 700,000 in the pot, Bill then pulled the trigger for his last 550,000 after the dealer rung out a 5 of Hearts 4 of Hearts: Jh flop, but found himself in a world of trouble when Jeremie made the call with his monster.

Bill: Ace of Spades 10 of Diamonds
Jeremie: Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds

Bill couldn’t find help on the turn (Queen of Clubs) or river (5 of Spades), and was sent packing in 27th place.

    27th place: Bill Kontaratos – $750

Tonight’s Bounty tournament has begun and part-way through the first level of play there are already 100 players at the tables! This is a popular event, and with late registration being common at Playground – particularly on weekday evenings – this number is sure to grow by quite a bit before registration closes.

Trudeau’s elimination leads to a redraw

Eric Trudeau, who came in as one of the short stacks in this Day 3, found himself all-in with under 5 big blinds from middle position. Play folded around to Kaylen Nichol in the big blind, who made the call to go heads-up.

Eric: Ace of Hearts 8 of Hearts
Kaylen: King of Clubs Queen of Hearts

Kaylen spiked a pair to take the lead on the King of Spades 3 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs 2 of Hearts board to bring the field down to 27 players, meaning there is a redraw in place. Eric collected $700 for his 28th place finish.

Cards are in the air – and one player is down

Play has resumed in Event 1 and in the first hand of the evening, the event lost its first player. Mohamed Ben Yahia was on the button facing a raise to 100K by Nick-Real Seide, and chose to shove the 160K he was playing.

    Nick-Real: 6 of Clubs 6 of Spades
Mohamed: Ace of Hearts 5 of Diamonds

The board ran out with no help for Mohamed: 3 of Spades 4 of Spades 7 of Hearts 8 of Clubs 7 of Clubs.

Just a minute later on another table Pierre Olivier Guay shoved from utg and found a call from André Dupuis in the bb. Pierre Olivier showed Ace of Hearts 10 of Clubs while André’s King of Hearts King of Clubs was well in the lead and held to send Pierre Olivier to the rail.

Play continues – but there is a redraw at 27 players remaining, which means it will come as soon as one more player is eliminated.

The final day of the All-Stars for Starlight is moments from departure

Day 3 of the All-Stars for Starlight is here, and 30 players remain in contention from the 1,109 that we began with, all gunning for the huge $26,000 first place prize – which is accompanied by a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy! The tournament will play down until a winner is crowned, and you can follow live updates throughout the night here on the Playground Poker Club Blog.

Leading the field is local Kosta Papa, who bagged just shy of 1.5 million in chips, however many players are right on his tail as stacks a fairly close. Other players to watch are David Bolduc Hamel, Nick-Real Seide and Bill Kontaratos, who have all not only proven their skills time and time again, and who have also all bagged considerable stacks.

The All-Stars for Starlight event was the kickoff event to this year’s TonyBet Winter Festival, and is a charity event in support of the Starlight Children’s Foundation of Canada. A massive $27,725 was raised for the foundation through this event, as $25 was collected per entry.

Good luck to all the players who have made it through to Day 3!

    Bounty tournament tonight!

    2016/02/01 - 17:56 by

Tonight sees one of the all-time favourite tournament formats at Playground Poker Club – a bounty tournament! Every player will buy in to the event as usual, but along with their starting stack of 20K in chips, they will also receive a special $25 Bounty chip. This bounty chip stays with a player as long as he or she is in the tournament – but when the player is eliminated, his or her bounty chip goes to the player who did the deed. Meanwhile, if that player has eliminated others, he or she can take those bounty chips and exchange them for cash them in at the end of the evening.

Event 3 will begin at 7:30pm and late registration will be available until 9pm – so there’s still lots of time to get out to Playground and join in the fun!

Event 2 Champion: Eric JC Ylagan

    2016/02/01 - 2:04 by Playground Poker

Event 2 of the TonyBet Winter Festival was a one-day Shootout event which attracted a total of 82 players. The tournament started with 9 tables of 9 or 10 players each, and players had to win their table in Round 1 in order to move onto Round 2, which was the final table.

The 9 who made their seat for the final table were then guaranteed a cash prize, with the winner set to take home a cool $3,101, as well as a TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy. Once play fell 6-handed, the players agreed to make an ICM based chop, leaving the required 2% of the prize pool for the eventual winner. At the time, Shawn Dubeau and Michelle Belliveau were the big stacks, and they locked in $2,100 and $2,000 respectively, while Eric JC Ylagan was the shortest of the stacks, holding a little under 6 big blinds – worth $1,150 at the time of the deal. Eric then proceeded to go on a hot streak, and quickly ramped his stack up to the chip lead, knocking out players left and right in the process.

It didn’t take long before he found himself heads-up with a 3-to-1 chip lead versus Alex Plourde, a battle which only lasted a few hands. Both players found themselves with all their chips in the middle only a few hands into heads-up, in what was virtually a coin flip. Alex held King of Spades 10 of Hearts, and was racing versus the 5 of Hearts 5 of Spades of Eric. With no help on the 4 of Spades Ace of Clubs 3 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs board, Alex was eliminated in 2nd place, while Eric emerged as the champion.

Eric earned an additional $360 for the win, as stipulated by the conditions of the chop, and also took home the stunning TonyBet Winter Festival Champion’s Trophy.

    Congratulations!

Event 2 Champion: Eric JC Ylagan – $1,510 and the Event 2 Champion’s Trophy
