Event 4 Champion: Philipp Daze

2015/08/26 - 1:07 by Playground Poker

Event 4 Champion: Philipp Daze

Everything seemed to fall into place today for Philipp Daze, and he seemed unbeatable from the moment he got to the final table. At a few occasions, he found himself all-in and trailing his opponent, however lady luck had different plans for him and always pulled him out of trouble to inevitably lead him to victory!

Play opened up considerable after a 3-way deal was made, and Philipp’s run good managed to eliminate Hiroaki in 3rd place, and then later eliminate heads-up opponent Ruben Perceval. In the final hand of play, Ruben open-shipped a dozen big blinds from the small blind, and found a call. He turned over Jack of Clubs 7 of Diamonds, and lost to Philipp’s Ace of Hearts 2 of Spades on a board reading 8 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds 9 of Spades 3 of Hearts.

Philipp earned himself a sweet $9,978 cash prize for his win, as well as a beautiful Montréal Poker Expo Champion’s Trophy, while Ruben collected $8,015 for his second place finish.

Congratulations!

From 3 to 2

Of the 3 players who made the deal for the remaining prize pool, the first has now been eliminated as Hiroaki Harada hits the rail. The hand that took him out was a bit of a cooler, and rated at least a chop much of the time if not the outright victory.

The preflop action was very quick and the players turned over their hands just as quickly.

Hiroaki: 3 of Spades 3 of Clubs
Philipp: 2 of Clubs 2 of Diamonds

The board was a disaster for Hiroaki: 2 of Spades 5 of Clubs 4 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs and Philipp’s flopped set meant the end of Hioaki’s night.

3rd place: Hiroaki Harada, $8,495

Once play fell to 3-handed, the players asked to pause the clock to discuss a potential deal. The tournament requires $1,000 to be left to the eventual winner, who will also take home a Montréal Poker Expo Champion’s Trophy, and the players decided to split the rest of the prizepool based on an ICM chop.

Here are the results of the deal:

    1. Philipp Daze (1,524,000) – $8,978
    2. Hiroaki Harada (1,071,000) – $8,495
    3. Ruben Perceval (766,000) – $8,015

Sean Windover pushed all-in rather light for just under 400,000 from under the gun, and ran into a monster, as Hiroaki snapped with Ace of Clubs Ace of Spades from the big blind. Sean turned over King of Clubs 7 of Diamonds, and although he flopped a pair, the Jack of Diamonds King of Hearts 6 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts 3 of Hearts board ran in favour of the aces.

    5th place: Felix Sides

Felix Sides has been eliminated in 5th place after a 2 back-to-back hands played against Philipp Daze. In the first hand, Philipp raised to 80K and Felix 3-bet from the small blind to 230K. Philipp called and the flop was laid out: Jack of Diamonds 5 of Spades 4 of Spades.

On the flop, Felix opened to 205K and Philipp quickly raised all-in. Felix folded surprisingly quickly, flashing a pair of tens, while Philipp reciprocated by flashing pocket 5s for a flopped set.

In the very next hand Phillip raised to 80K once again and this time Felix went all-in for his last 230K in chips. Philipp called and they showed down their hands.

Philipp: 7 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds
Felix: Ace of Spades 10 of Diamonds

The community cards – 2 of Clubs King of Spades Jack of Hearts 7 of Spades 6 of Diamonds – had nothing for Felix and he hit the rail in 5th place.

    6th place: Odette Tremblay

Odette Tremblay had been on a rollercoaster for the past few levels, but by the time there were 6 players left she had been on a down swing for a while and had just 200K in chips left. She opened all-in from late position for that last 200K and Felix quickly called. Odette was in fine shape at this point, holding Ace of Clubs King of Hearts while Felix turned over Ace of Hearts Jack of Clubs.

The flop was safe: 5 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts 7 of Hearts and the turn 4 of Clubs didn’t hurt either. But the river Jack of Spades gave Felix a pair and Odette was sent to the tournament desk to pick up her payout ticket.

    7th place: Kiril Martinov Gelev

With a stack just under the 10 big blind mark, Kiril Martinov Gelev opted to move all-in from utg+1. Action folded around to Ruben in the big blind, who tanked for a moment before committing the chips.

Kiril: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Hearts

Ruben: Ace of Spades Jack of Hearts

The underdog hand ran a straight on the 4 of Spades King of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds 10 of Spades 6 of Clubs board to score the knockout, and Ruben climbed up to nearly 800,000.

Felix Sides, who was the chip leader at the start of the hand, opened from middle position to 55,000, and went heads-up with Philipp Daze, who made the call from the button.

On a flop showing 5 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds King of Diamonds, Felix continuation-bet 60,000, and called off the raise by Philipp to 160,000 total. The turn brought the Ace of Hearts, and Felix checked the action over to Philipp, who moved all-in for 347,000. Felix made a quick call, and they tabled their hands. Both players had a pair and a flush draw, but Felix had the slight edge as he held the highest pair at the time.

Felix: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds
Philipp: King of Hearts Queen of Hearts

The river 2 of Hearts completed the heart-flush for Philipp, who scooped the massive pot and took over the chip lead of the tournament.

This was the last hand before the break, and we will bring an update on the chip counts momentarily.

Felix Sides wins a huge pot

    Felix Sides

Rong Xu opened the betting under the gun with a shove of his last 140K, and Felix Sides went all-in over for about 360K total. Action folded to Sean Windover – the chip leader to this point – who went all-in himself. It folded back around through the blinds and the cards were turned over.

Rong: Ace of Hearts 8 of Hearts
Felix: Queen of Hearts Queen of Clubs
Sean: Ace of Diamonds King of Spades

The flop was marginally positive for Rong but Felix’s Queens looked pretty good as 8 of Diamonds 6 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds were dealt. And the turn and river of 6 of Spades 5 of Hearts meant Felix added over 500K to his stack and is the clear chip leader with 7 players left. Rong Xu was eliminated and Sean’s stack was severely depleted.

Just a couple of hand later Louis-Dominic Asselin was eliminated in 8th position.
