    Plessis-Belair wins Event #3

    2019/02/21 - 21:05 by Bob T

During heads-up play, the players decided to make another small deal; instead of $400 going to 1st place, they agreed to re-adjust and leave $300 for 1st and $100 for 2nd.

The two players battled back and forth for an orbit or two, and finally they were both all-in: Jonathan had 6 of Hearts 4 of Diamonds and Normand had Jack of Hearts 7 of Spades.  Jonathan was happy to smash the 6 of Spades Ace of Spades 4 of Spades flop, hitting 2 pair, but as seasoned tournament poker players know, in most all-in situations, there seems to always be a sweat. He was not happy to see the spade draw and wanted the dealer to keep it clean. The 8 of Hearts on the turn was a brick, but the 5 of Spades on the river made a flush for Normand, and, all of the sudden, we had our champion.

Event #3 Champion: Normand Plessis Belair, $1,715

    Last hand of play

    2nd place: Jonathan English, $1,500

    Play has loosened up

Right after the players made a deal, play loosened up and we started to see a lot more flops. A 3-way all in developed when Alam shoved his 248K stack and both Matthew Willard and Normand Plessis-Belair also went all-in. Alam had Queen of Hearts 6 of Hearts, Matthew opened up Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades, and Normand had Ace of Spades King of Diamonds.  As fortune would have it, the runout was 8 of Spades 5 of Hearts 5 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Queen of Spades, and, Alam tripled up his stack while Matthew was eliminated in 4th place.

A few orbits later, the tables turned, as Alam got it in with Jack of Hearts 9 of Spades and was called by Jonathan English who had Queen of Spades 10 of Spades, Alam couldn’t find any help with the 3 of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 10 of Clubs 4 of Clubs 6 of Hearts board.  He was crippled as most of his chips shifted to Jonathan.  A few hands later he busted out in 3rd.

Just a few hands after the last elimination, the remaining four players asked tournament staff to pause the clock so they could discuss a deal. The minimum that needed to be reserved for the winner in this tournament (according to the tournament rules) was about $170, but everyone was happy to reserve quite a bit more than that – they settled on $400 for the winner – and to distribute the rest of the prize pool via ICM chop.

    • Jonathan English: $1,400
    • Matthew Willard: $1,135
    • Normand Plessis-Belair: $1,415
    • Alam Miah: $1,261

    Play continues 4-handed.

Matthew Lakins was starting to blind down and when action folded his sb he decided it was time to go for it.  He shoved his remaining chips with two broadway cards, Queen of Spades 10 of Hearts only to discover his timing could not have been any worse; Jonathan English woke up with King of Hearts King of Clubs in the bb and and made the call.  The board ran out 7 of Spades 5 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 5 of Clubs Ace of Clubs and Matthew finished in 6th for a $520 payday.

On the very next hand, Jonathan English once again picked up a pair of cowboys, but had no callers.

Then Judith Bombardier shoved her remaining stack with suited connectors, 9 of Clubs 8 of Clubs and was called by Matthew Willard with his Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs. The board of 5 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Jack of Spades was of no help to Judith and she exited the tournament in 5th place for $680.

Johnny Akilian opened the action from late position with a raise to 18K, and players folded around to Julien Lemay in the bb, who shoved over the top. Johnny snap called, and the hole cards were exposed.

Julien: Ace of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds
Johnny: Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts

The flop brought no joy for Julien: 7 of Spades 5 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs and though the turn 4 of Hearts gave him a few more outs, the river Queen of Diamonds was the end of the road.

    10th place: Julien Lemay, $170

Just about an orbit following Johnny followed Julien to the Rail as he was eliminated in 9th place.

    9th place, Johnny Akilian, $230
