Event #5: Ahmad Baalbaki is the champion

    2019/02/24 - 20:53 by Bob T

Event #5, a $200 + $20 Deepstack Freezeout, started at 11:00am, featuring a 30,000 chip starting stack and 20 minute levels.  Although the weather was not the best today, 113 players made the trip to Playground to enjoy a Sunday afternoon of tournament poker. There was a guaranteed prize pool of $15,000 that ended up swelling to $21,922!

There were many local grinders mixed in with out of town players competing for a top prize of $5,252.  The day played out slowly, with many players grinding similar sized stacks. Cameron Wilson from Kitchener, Ontario, had started to run away from the pack in the later stages.  Mike Saragossi then started to build a monster stack heading into the final table.  Ahmad Baalbaki was playing patiently, nursing a below average sized stack as we were down to the last 3 tables. he never gave up hope and was able to take a seat on the final table.  After winning the huge hand against Mike Saragossi, it was almost impossible to stop him. Altough he was relatively card dead for a few hours through the afternoon, he was able to pick up some key hands when it really mattered on the finally table.

On the last hand of play, David Cadoch was short stacked so it looked like Ahmad was trying to take advantage of David as he had just shoved his monster stack. David decided to call it off and the hands were tabled:

Ahmad: Jack of Clubs Jack of Hearts
David: 6 of Hearts 4 of Clubs

With a Queen of Clubs 2 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts 10 of Clubs King of Clubs board, David exited in 2nd place and we had our Event #5 champion.

    1st place: Ahmad Baalbaki, $4,942

    The last hand of play:

    2nd place: David Cadoch, $3,000

Saragossi and Ahmed out in 3rd and 4th

Since the deal was made, we 1st saw Tanvir Ahmed fall to Ahmad Baalbaki when Tanvir shoved King of Clubs Jack of Clubs and was called by Ahmad holding Ace of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds.  When the board came 8 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 6 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs Ace of Spades, we were now down to 3 players.

Next to go was Mike Saragossi, who had lost 895k when he ran Ace of Clubs 8 of Diamonds into Ahmad’s Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades. and had no help from the board: Queen of Spades 3 of Spades 2 of Spades 9 of Hearts 4 of Spades.  Mike was crippled on this hand and ended up exiting the tournament when his Jack of Spades 6 of Spades went against David Cadoch’s King of Hearts Jack of Clubs.

    Final table: Four fast bustouts

Our 1st casualty of the final table was Tania-Marie Stephen in 10th ($410), followed by Dave Jeanneau-Cyr in 9th ($550), with Tanvir Ahmed taking the chips from both of them with his King of Clubs King of Spades.

The following hand Gianfranco Giordano shoved his Queen of Hearts Queen of Spades against Tanvir’s Ace of Spades King of Spades and the board made a flush for Tanvir, knocking out Gianfranco in 8th ($720).

Cameron Wilson had a commanding lead earlier on and we missed how he lost a good percentage of his stack, but saw him all in against David Cadoch and Ahmed Baallbaki. Baalbaki had flopped a set of 6s for the win and Cameron exited in 7th ($960).

With approximately 10 bb’s, Richard Hamelin open shoved in the cutoff position with King of Spades Queen of Diamonds, and was insta-called by Mike Saragossi on the button who woke up with 10 of Diamonds 10 of Spades.

The board run-out was: 4 of Clubs 2 of Clubs Jack of Clubs Jack of Hearts 3 of Hearts which was of no help to Richard who headed to the tournament desk to collect his payout slip, finishing in 13th.  There have been two more bustouts since then:

    • Richard Hamelin 13th place $380
    • Jean-Yves Demers 12th place $380
    • Isaac Buswell 11th place $410

We just caught up with the action in time to see three player’s all in pre-flop. Although we didn’t get a chance to see the action leading up to this, we watched Andre Hernandez smile as he had picked up King of Diamonds King of Clubs and proceeded to knock out Sebastien Dion and Bob St Cyr.  Hernandez told us how he just arrived at the table and picked up a pair of Kings two times in just a few hands.  At times a table change can destroy your game, and other times, it can be the best thing possible to happen to you!

The bustouts continue as we have just lost notables Anderson F., Diana Shamshoun, Alam Miah and Fabrizio Pugliese.
