The WPT Warm-Up Champion: Philippe Belley

2015/04/30 - 21:42 by Playground Poker

The WPT Warm-Up Champion: Philippe Belley

Event 7 Champion: Philippe Belley

After knocking out 3rd place finisher Alexander Allison, Philippe took over the chip lead going into heads-up play versus Andrew Graham. It only took a few hands back and forth before we saw an all-in and a call, as Andrew opened from the small blind to 100,000, and then made the call after Philippe 3bet shoved from the big blind. Andrew was the preflop favourite, holding Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs, however Philippe had live cards, as he tabled King of Diamonds 10 of Spades. The flop was huge for Philippe, as he picked up straight and flush draws on the Jack of Spades 2 of Spades Queen of Spades board. He made his flush with the Ace of Spades turn, and only had to face 4 full-house outs to win the hand. The river brought the 4 of Clubs, which sealed the deal.

With that hand, Philippe was crowned our champion of Event 7 – WTP Warm-up, collecting a sweet $44,500 prize, as well as a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet! Andrew pocketed a consolation prize of $31,300 for his second place finish.

Congratulations!

Allison runs into a brick wall

Alexander James Allison thought he was setting a trap when he limp-shoved from the small blind, after Philippe Belley opened his big blind. He found a snap-call from his opponent though, and was in a world of trouble.

Alexander: Ace of Clubs King of Clubs

Philippe: Ace of Hearts Ace of Spades

The board ( 2 of Diamonds 6 of Spades 7 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts ) brought no help, and Alexander “@Cheese9” was sent home in 3rd place, while Philippe added around 1,400,000.

With that, we are now heads-up between Andrew Graham and Philippe Belley!

    3rd place: Alexander James Allison – $20,050

Andrew Graham was sitting in the small blind when he pulled the trigger on Joshua Keith Tucker in the big blind, forcing him to a decision. Joshua, with a stack of roughly 600,000, made the call, and they were off to the races!

Andrew: Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades

Joshua: King of Clubs Queen of Spades

Andrew made two-pair on the Ace of Diamonds 10 of Hearts 2 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 5 of Spades board to bring us down to our final 3!

Michael Wang had fallen on hard times, in terms of his stack, and while he hovered near the 300K mark he was doing everything he could to pick up blinds and antes and try to rebuild his stack to something more playable. For the 3rd orbit in a row he opened all-in utg – but this time Alex Allison chose to go all-in himself to isolate, which was successful. The players were heads up.

Michael: Ace of Clubs 8 of Hearts
Alex: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs

The flop was all Alex: 3 of Hearts King of Hearts Queen of Spades. The turn 8 of Diamonds was just a tease for Michael – the 9 of Spades on the river ended his day.

    5th place: Michael Wang, $11,150

Kane Kalas has been eliminated in 6th place by Alexander James Allison. Alex raised to 65K from the cutoff and it folded around to Kane in the big blind, so proceeded to go all in for his last 305K. Alex quickly called and the cards were turned on their backs.

Kane: King of Hearts King of Spades
Alex: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds

Everything looked great for Kane to double up until Alex spiked the famous Ace of Clubs on the river – and just like that, Kane went to pick up his prize coupon.

    6th place: Kane Kalas, $8,920

Alex Fortin Demers has been the next player eliminated in Event 7. He leaves the tournament in 7th place, good for $7,400. Alex had been short for a few hands and even his triple up didn’t help that much – he was at just 84K when he put all his chips in the middle. Action folded around to Kane Kalas in the big blind – which is now 24K – and despite the fact that Kane has an under-average stack he had to make the call.

Alex: Jack of Diamonds 10 of Spades
Kane: 8 of Clubs 5 of Spades

The flop was OK for Jack-high: 2 of Spades King of Diamonds 3 of Spades but the 5 of Clubs on the turn was bad and the 8 of Hearts on the river was worse.

7th place, Alex Fortin Demers, $7,400.00
