What they’re playing for (WPT Edition)

In addition to prize money (always the chief motivation of poker players), players in the biggest events at Playground Poker Club also have an additional prize to compete for – the Championship Belt! Ever since 2011, we’ve awarded boxing-style belts to winners of select events – and once we even held the final table within a boxing ring! That’s in addition to the prestigious WPT Champion’s trophy, where winners names are enshrined for all time…

Well, the boxing ring is gone but the belts have survived – and the belt for the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship is stunning!

Welcome to the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship!

2015/05/01 - 10:57 by

In just minutes, Season XIV of the World Poker Tour will kick off with Day 1a of the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship!

This is the third Canadian Spring Championship in a row, but just the second springtime full WPT Tour event. In 2013, Amir Babakhani outlasted a field of 735 entrants to take home the first prize, and in 2014 when this was a WPT National event (with $1,100 buy-in), Jason Comtois was the last man standing of over 1000 entries.

Event 10 of the Playground Poker Spring Classic presented by partypoker.net. The buy-in for the event is $3200 + $300 and it is a next-day re-entry event with 2 starting days (today and Saturday May 2nd). Players will start with 30,000 in tournament chips and blinds will be 60 minutes long during Days 1 and 2. Anyone may consults the full rules and tournament structure by downloading the PDF from our Tournament Details page.

Late registration will be open until the end of the dinner break following level 6 today, which means that players have until 6:15 tonight to join the event.

Good luck to all!

The WPT Warm-Up Champion: Philippe Belley

2015/04/30 - 21:42 by Playground Poker

The WPT Warm-Up Champion: Philippe Belley

Event 7 Champion: Philippe Belley

After knocking out 3rd place finisher Alexander Allison, Philippe took over the chip lead going into heads-up play versus Andrew Graham. It only took a few hands back and forth before we saw an all-in and a call, as Andrew opened from the small blind to 100,000, and then made the call after Philippe 3bet shoved from the big blind. Andrew was the preflop favourite, holding Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs, however Philippe had live cards, as he tabled King of Diamonds 10 of Spades. The flop was huge for Philippe, as he picked up straight and flush draws on the Jack of Spades 2 of Spades Queen of Spades board. He made his flush with the Ace of Spades turn, and only had to face 4 full-house outs to win the hand. The river brought the 4 of Clubs, which sealed the deal.

With that hand, Philippe was crowned our champion of Event 7 – WTP Warm-up, collecting a sweet $44,500 prize, as well as a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet! Andrew pocketed a consolation prize of $31,300 for his second place finish.

Congratulations!

Satellite Day at Playground Poker Club

2015/04/30 - 15:17 by

Today is a pretty special day in the Playground Poker Spring Classic presented by partypoker.net – it’s Satellite Day!

There are 3 satellite tournaments for the WPT Canadian Spring Championship today. The first is already well underway, and though it had 2 seats guaranteed, the massive participation means that 6 seats will actually be awarded in the tourney.

At 4pm there’s a second satellite – this one will be a $135 + $15 Turbo Re-entry Satellite and again 2 seats are guaranteed although we expect that many more than that will be awarded. And then tonight at 7:30pm is the “pièce de résistance” – a $350 + $30 Re-entry Satellite with a huge 10 seat guarantee!

All tolled, it’s 100% guaranteed that 18 additional satellite winners will be joining the fun in the WPT Canadian Spring Championship on May 1st or May 2nd – and almost certainly quite a few more than that! And once you add those seats to the 50+ satellite and other promotional seats that have already awarded here at Playground Poker Club, it’s clear there’s a ton of value to be had in the Big Event.

Event 9 Champion: Arthur Walker!

Event 9 Champion: Arthur Walker

After Jordan Fafard Miraglia was eliminated in 4th place, the three remaining players decided to make a deal. Leaving the required $300 up top for the eventual winner, as well as a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet, the players took the following portion of the prizepool each, based on their chip counts:

  • Arthur Walker – $3,900
  • Joey Silver – $3,000
  • Desi Miller- $3,000

On the first hand after the deal, Arthur ( Ace of Hearts Jack of Diamonds ) eliminated Joey ( Queen of Diamonds Queen of Hearts ) by spiking an ace on the Ace of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 2 of Clubs 5 of Diamonds King of Diamonds board. Only two hands later, it was Desi who was all-in and at risk, and his King of Spades 9 of Clubs failed to improve versus Arthurs’ 10 of Hearts 10 of Spades, crowning Arthur as our Event 9 champion!

Event 6 champion: Daniel Kwon

Event 6 champion: Daniel Kwon

Event 6 Champion: Daniel Kwon

Daniel Kwon came close to winning a bracelet just a few nights ago, as he placed 3rd in Event 2 of this Playground Poker Spring Classic. He was disappointed in not taking it home back then, and it was quite evident that he was determined to not let that happen again tonight. When play was 4-handed, he found himself 1 card away from victory, as he held all three other players on the brink of elimination with his pocket pair of KK. Unfortunately for him, Alexandre Douville ran a flush to win the pot, bringing the tournament down to heads-up.

Daniel started the heads-up match holding only 15% of the chips in play, but quickly took over the chip lead to eventually knock Alexandre out, making him our Event 6 champion! This victory credited him a total 1st prize of $3,342, and also awarded him the Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet he was so determined to win!

In addition to his win, Daniel was also our “Bounty Hunter” of the night, as he collected the most bounties of the night, racking in a total of 11 bounty chips (including his own, which he gets to cash in as well), worth an extra $1,100 in cash! Sean Windover, who was part of the 6-way deal, was second in bounty chips, as he collected 9 of them to pocket $900 cash.

Congratulations!

Event 3 Champion: Gerald Macleod

2015/04/29 - 3:01 by Playground Poker

Event 3 Champion: Gerald Macleod

Event 3 Champion: Gerald Macleod

Once play fell heads-up between Gerald Macleod and Ko Maddock, the two players opted to make a deal. The tournament rules require at least 5% of the prize pool to be left up top for the eventual winner, so the two decided to leave $5,000 extra for the winner, and take $34,133 each.

It only took a level of play before Gerald vanquished over his heads-up opponent Ko, and he earned a cool $39,133 cash prize for his win, as well as a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet!

On the last hand of play, Ko limped from the small blind for 400,000 total, and then called the raise to 1,400,000 by Gerald. On a flop showing 6 of Spades Queen of Spades 9 of Diamonds, Gerald rapped the table first to act, leaving the door open for Ko to make his move. He went all-in, and Gerald was put to a decision. After tanking for a few moments, he announced the call, and realized he was in a great spot. Tabling 10 of Diamonds 10 of Spades, Gerald had a few outs to fade, as Ko tabled 6 of Clubs 4 of Clubs. The turn and river ( 2 of Spades 9 of Spades ) actually improved Gerald’s hand, and with that pot, he became the champion of Event 3!

Congratulations!
