Early eliminations
A few quick eliminations happened to start Day 3 of The $250 Frenzy, as some players returned short stacked with little room to manoeuvre.
The first to go was Steven Wilson, who 3bet his remaining ~600,000 with
after Joseph Abou Khalil opened with
. With no help on the board, Steven made his way to the cashiers after only one hand of play in Day 3.
Almost in the same time, Guillermo Pureza moved in his short stack after an open from Christopher McClung. Guillermo turned over
, but failed to improve versus the
of Christopher on a
board.
- Steven Wilson
- Guillermo Pureza
Three over 200K
Tournament staff just removed the black T100 chips from play and during the break we updated the counts of the large stacks. We found just three players with stacks of around double the chip average:
- Alexandre Fortin – 255K
- Mike Fraser – 215K
- Dustin Melanson – 200K
There are quite a few short stacks around the tables at this point, so the tournament will in all likelihood get a little deeper than it is right now as these shorties either double or are eliminated.
The $250 Frenzy wraps up tonight
In just under an hour, the 22 players remaining in Event 3 of the Playground Poker Spring Classic presented by partypoker.net – better known as The $250 Frenzy – will be taking their seats to resume play in Day 3 of the event. Blinds tonight will be 40 minutes in length (until the tourney is heads-up), and play is 9-handed.

Christopher McClung
Overall the remaining field seems quite strong. Near the top of the leaderboard is Players Club member Chris McClung, who was also among the leaders to start Day 2. Chris is certainly one of the most accomplished players at the table – but judging by the play last night, he’s far from the only player with “game”.
There’s another player to pay attention to among those still in the action: Event 1 Champion, Rick Shamshoum. The $150 Re-entry/$250 Re-entry “double” has never been accomplished here, and winning both tournaments back to back would be an incredible achievement.
In addition to Chris and Rick, there are 4 Playground tournament regulars in the field who have consistently proven their tournament abilities over the years: Matt Ranger, Randy Khalil, Marc Guerbilsky, and Joseph Abou Khalil. Matt and Randy both have healthy stacks, but any of these 4 could spell danger for the rest of the field.
Good luck to everyone still in the event, and we’ll have full coverage from the beginning of the evening until a champion is crowned.
Chip leaders into level 13
Here are the current top five stacks as level 13 begins.
- Mike Fraser – 205K
- Gagandeep Singh – 163K
- John Power – 152K
- Alexandre Fortin – 144K
- Jean-Philippe Piquette – 134K
Third break; 40 left
There are just 40 players remaining in Event 5 and they have left the tables for their 3rd break of the day. We’ll update the leaderboard during the break – in the mean time, here are a few recent photos we snapped.
Tonight! The 50/50 Bounty Event
Bounty tournaments have always been popular at Playground Poker Club, and ever since we first introduced the 50/50 Bounty format it has occupied a regular spot on the weekly calendar. The “big event” version of this tournament is what’s on tap for tonight – Event 6 is a $100 + $20 + $100 NL Hold’em Bounty tournament, meaning that $100 of a player’s buy-in goes to the prize pool, and $100 goes to a bounty chip that will only be accessible to the player who busts them out of the tournament!
Event 6 gets underway at 7:30 tonight and is a one-day event, with 20K in starting chips and 20 minute blind levels. Late registration is available for 4 levels plus the break, meaning that players have until just after 9pm to join the tournament.
Tonight is going to be a busy night here at Playground Poker Club, as three events will all be underway at the same time. In addition to the 50/50 Bounty event, the $550 Freeze, which started this morning, will continue deep into the evening, and The $250 Frenzy will resume for Day 3 and play down to a champion.
Leaders at the 2nd break
The players in Event 5 are taking their second break of the day while tournament staff removes the green T25 chips from play. There are 68 players remaining in the event on 7 tables, and three players have built up stacks that move them to the front of the pack.
- Gagandeep Singh – 118K
- Andrew Lalonde – 93K
- Tommy Boily – 92K

First leaderboard of Event 5
The first leaderboard of the event is pretty short – just one player has managed to build up a stack that clearly puts him in the lead in the tournament. In addition there are several players in the 38K to 46K range, which will give these players a good platform to build as the tournament continues.
- Julio Cacoilo – 73K
Players will be back from their first break of the day in just 2 minutes and at that time we’ll have an update of the final registration number and shortly thereafter we’ll publish the prize pool.
