Event 4 Champion: Andrew Dick

2016/04/25 - 20:03 by Playground Poker

Event 4 Champion: Andrew Dick

Event 4 in the Playground Poker Spring Classic was a NL Hold’em DeepStack Turbo which took place on Monday April 25th at noon. A total of 136 players participated in this 1-day event, of which 14 locked in a cash prize.

When play fell 6-handed, players decided to do an even-chop of the remaining prize pool ($1,700 each), awarding a touch more to chip-leader at the time Jeremie Trepanier ($1,797). The tournament structure required $265 extra to be left for the eventual winner, and once play resumed after the deal, the eliminations came very quickly. Many gambles were taken in an attempt to come out as tournament champion, and it was finally Andrew Dick who was the man with all the chips at the end of the tournament.

Troy Vandaalen tried his best to overcome Andrew in heads-up play, however in the final hand his Queen of Spades Jack of Spades was not able to overcome the King of Hearts 4 of Diamonds of Andrew, forcing him out in 2nd place.

Andrew Dick took home a total of $1,965 for his victory in Event 4, and was also awarded a Playground Poker Spring Classic Champion’s Trophy for his run.

Congratulations!

In other news, we have learned that 2014 WPT Montreal Champion Jonathan Jaffe is the chip leader with just 6 players remaining in the inaugural World Poker Tour Tournament of Champions!

A few other former Playground-hosted WPT Champions participated in this first Tournament of Champions, including Jared Mahoney (2015 WPT Montreal), Sheraz Nasir (2015 WPT CSC), Amir Babakhani (2013 WPT CSC), and Jonathan Roy (2012 WPT Montreal). In addition there were several other players we know well at Playground Poker Club: David Ormsby, Matt Salsberg, Tony Dunst, and of course Players Club members Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari.

Play will resume tomorrow (April 24th) at 4pm and there will be a live stream with commentary and analysis by Tony Dunst and Vanessa Selbst. You can follow the action via the WPT website.

Kathy Sawers is the Champion of Event 2!

2016/04/22 - 6:38 by Playground Poker

Kathy Sawers is the Champion of Event 2!

By the time play got heads up between Kathy Sawers and Garen Galanti, the lead was shifting from one player to the other. One player would take a slight lead – only to give it away shortly following. The chips were moving back and forth – to the extent that both players kicked around the idea of an additional deal between them, though no agreement was made.

After 10 hours of play in an event that proved to be a big success with 179 players, Event 2 of the Playground Poker Spring Classic presented by partypoker.net ended with Kathy Sawers as the champion! A fact worthy of note – in the 2 events that have concluded so far in the Spring Classic, both winners have been women. Congratulations!

The Wild $150 Champion: Tina

2016/04/22 - 1:54 by Playground Poker

The Wild $150 Champion: Tina

The first event of the Playground Poker Spring Classic is over, and after 34 levels of play spread across 3 days of poker, it was finally Tina who emerged as The Wild $150 Champion! She navigated her way across a massive 1,168 player field to find herself as the last one standing, and earned herself a sweet $24,950 cash prize as well as a Playground Poker Spring Champion’s Trophy!

She arrived at the final table 2nd in chips, and although she slid down the leaderboard a few levels in, she kept her composure and fought her way back up. When play fell 3-handed, a deal was proposed, however given she was the short-stack and the ICM deal only offered her a little more than the already locked-in 3rd place amount, she refused the deal and play resumed. It didn’t take her long to take over the chip lead, as only a few orbits following the deal she won a huge pot versus chip leader at-the-time David St-Louis.

After David’s elimination in 3rd place, Tina found herself heads-up versus Martin Lapostolle with even chip stacks. The two players agreed to an even-chop, leaving the required $3,000 for the eventual winner. After nearly a full level of heads-up play, Tina raised with a pair in hand, and called off the limp-shove of Martin in the small blind. Tina’s 8 of Clubs 8 of Hearts won the race versus her opponent’s Jack of Diamonds 10 of Spades, crowning her as The Wild $150 champion!

Congratulations!

WPT Satellite Winners today!

2016/04/19 - 19:18 by

WPT Satellite Winners today!

Today's satellite winners!

Today at noon was the beginning of the first “in-festival” satellite for the WPT Canadian Spring Championship. We hosted satellites twice weekly in the run-up to the Spring Classic, and there are still 8 more scheduled satellites between now and the WPT! So far, a total of 36 seats have been won through live satellites, with many more to come in the next 2 weeks.

Today’s tourney was a real bargain – it was a $135 + $15 re-entry tournament (with a $5 dealer-add on) that had 40 entries plus 16 re-entries – 56 total. This contributed to a prize pool of 2 entries in the WPT Canadian Spring Championship, plus a $560 prize for the player in 3rd place.

The three-way battle in the tourney was very hard-fought – appropriately so, considering the pay jump from $560 to $3500 – and at the end of the day, the winners were Isham Yamani and Zhen Wang, who edged out Grigoire Miron Banea for the 2nd seat.

In the final hand of the tourney, Zhen pushed holding Jack of Spades 9 of Hearts and was instantly called by Grigoire, holding 8 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs. When admitted after the dust settled that it was simply a move on his part – but the board ran out in his favour: 9 of Spades 2 of Hearts Jack of Hearts 5 of Clubs King of Spades and he took down the seat.

There are still 41 WPT entries guaranteed in upcoming scheduled satellites – and that doesn’t count what is likely to be many sit-n-go satellites that will also be held as we approach the WPT. This is one of the best ways to enter the big event – you should give it a shot!

The trophies!

2016/04/15 - 16:43 by

In the past few festivals we’ve hosted here at Playground Poker Club, we’ve offered trophies to side event winners, in place of the more traditional bracelets.

Each trophy is custom made and features the name of the event as well as additional festival information – the WPT Canadian Spring Championship and Playground Poker Spring Classic logos, as well as the logo of our fantastic sponsor for the Spring Classic, Partypoker.net.

I should say that the trophies are awarded to most side event winners – there is one exception: Event 8, the $300 + $30 NL Hold’em Survivor event. Since the top 10% of the field are all winners in that tournament, there isn’t a single person to whom we can award a trophy!

Here are photos of the trophy that will be awarded for Event 1, The Wild $150!
