The 2016 WPT Canadian Spring Champion: Seth Davies!

2016/05/05 - 17:21 by

The 2016 WPT Canadian Spring Champion: Seth Davies!

After about 43 hands of heads up play between competitors that saw the lead swing one way and then the other, Seth Davies has defeated Ruben Percival to emerge victorious in the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship!

After a long stretch of play during which the players had relatively even stacks, Ruben slowly started to accumulate chips until at one point he was the clear leader in the tournament – only to have the stacks return to about even when Seth hit a 4 of Spades on the river to make bottom pair and take a big pot. They exchanged the lead a couple of times after that, but the general trend was in Seth’s favour – and eventually Seth had a 3-1 advantage and the clear momentum in the tournament.

On the final hand of play, Seth raised to 275K and Ruben defended his blind – the players went to the flop.

Flop: 9 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts 4 of Hearts

Ruben was first to act: check. Seth bet 375K and action returned to Ruben, who raised to 1.075M.

With top pair/good kicker and back door flush possibilities, Seth made the call. The dealer set out the turn card.

Turn: 7 of Hearts

Ruben had just over a pot-sized bet left in his stack, and chose to lead out to 800K. Seth made the call.

River: 5 of Diamonds

Ruben shoved – he was all in on the river… and Seth went into the tank. He was clearly feeling the pressure, required to make a hero call to potentially end the tournament – or to take a huge hit to his stack. Eventually, with a huge sigh, he made the correct call and with that, Seth Davies is our Champion!

Seth Davies has been on the receiving end of a few consecutive pots now, and he has now taken a 3-to-1 chip lead versus his opponent Ruben Perceval.

The biggest pot happened just moments ago, when Seth raised to 235K from the button, and Ruben 3bet to 705K. Seth came over the top with a 4bet to 1.25M, and Ruben came along to see a flop.

On a 2 of Spades 3 of Spades 6 of Diamonds board, Ruben check-called a bet of 850K. They both checked the Ace of Spades turn, and once the river brought a King of Hearts, Ruben checked for a third street in a row. Seth applied maximum pressure by moving all-in, which sent Ruben into the tank. After a few minutes, Ruben eventually let go of his hand, and with that pot Seth chipped up to over 9 million, while Ruben hangs just above 3 million.

    Level 30 begins

Heads-up play between Ruben Perceval and Seth Davies has been running for two full 30-minute levels so far, and both players have proven to be very active. They started the heads-up match quite even, with Seth in the slight chip-lead, and after swinging in both directions, it is now Ruben who has the lead going into level 30. His 7.15 million stack is only a little bit ahead of Seth’s 5.40M, and both players are playing very deep stacks so this is still anyone’s game.

Heads up between Davies and Perceval!

Heads-up: Seth Davies (left) versus Ruben Perceval (right)

Heads up action has just begun between Seth Davies and Ruben Perceval. Seth had taken a big chip lead in the tournament, but Ruben’s elimination of Joel allowed him to just about catch up and they start heads-up play – Ruben starts with just over a million fewer chips than Seth.

By the way, blind levels are now 30 minutes in length.

Both Seth and Ruben are skilled players and the tournament is incredibly deep, so we could still be here for a while…

    Joel Miller out 3rd

The final table of the WPT Canadian Spring Championship continues to move at a frenetic pace as play is already down to 2 players remaining with the elimination of Joel Miller in 3rd place.

Seth Davies opened the action to 130K on the button only to find a 3bet raise to 315K from Joel in the small blind. Ruben Perceval was next to act and he chose to 4bet shove. Seth got out of the way but Joel made the call.

Ruben: King of Hearts King of Clubs
Joel: Queen of Spades Queen of Spades

Ruben’s Kings held up on the Ace of Diamonds 5 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts 8 of Spades board and Joel hit the rail after an eventful first WPT tournament!

Once play fell 3-handed, Joel Miller found a great spot to double his short-stack up, when he opened his button, and called off his stack once Seth moved all-in from the big blind.

Seth: King of Hearts Jack of Diamonds
Joel: 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs

Seth flopped an open-ended straight draw on the Queen of Spades 10 of Clubs 8 of Clubs board, and his King was also live, however pairing his Jack would give Joel the straight. The turn brought the 10 of Diamonds and river 4 of Clubs, and with that Joel’s pocket pair was good to score him a double-up. He slid forward nearly 1-million to be doubled up, keeping him in the game late on this final table of the WPT Canadian Spring Championship.

The tournament went on break moments later, and below you will find an update on chips counts of the final 3 players.

Huge multiway pot on the FT

There was just a huge multiway all-in on this WPT Canadian Spring Championship final table that saw two players eliminated in a single hand!

Guillaume opened the action with an open shove of his last 695K and found Thomas raising over the top to isolate for around 2.3M… except that the isolation move was not successful – Seth woke up with a monster and made the call!

Guillaume: Ace of Hearts 7 of Hearts
Thomas: 9 of Spades 9 of Hearts
Seth: King of Hearts King of Clubs

The community cards were quite safe for Kings the whole way: 3 of Clubs Jack of Diamonds 4 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 6 of Spades and Seth scooped both players’ stacks! After the hand, Seth was up to 8,150,000 in tournament chops while both Guillaume and Thomas were sent to the Tournament Desk to pick up their payout coupons.

    4th place: Thomas Taylor, $85,460.00

    6th place: Tony Dunst

Tony Dunst has been eliminated in 6th place from the final table of the WPT Canadian Spring Championship.

Tony came to the action with a healthy stack and was very active to start the day, putting immense pressure on Guillaume Nolet along the way, but then about half an hour ago lost a big flip when Joel Miller’s pocket 9s held up against Tony’s AQ suited – and in the process destroyed a lot of the gains Tony had made to start the day.

A little while later Tony found himself with Ace of Clubs Jack of Spades in the cutoff facing a raise from Thomas Taylor and a call from Seth Davies – and made the 3bet shove for 1.45M chips. Seth called and turned over 10 of Clubs 10 of Spades.

The board runout of 4 of Hearts 5 of Clubs Queen of Hearts 3 of Diamonds King of Spades couldn’t give Tony the help he needed and he was eliminated from the tournament.

    6th place: Tony Dunst, $51,400.00

Joel Miller is now playing on the final table of his first ever World Poker Tour event! Joel joins us from the Ottawa Valley, a town called Fitzroy Harbour, just upriver from Ottawa and home to quite a few frequent visitors to Playground Poker Club.

One of these frequent visitors is Dave Rathwell, who was also the organizer of “Bling’s Poker League” which, in this edition, awarded 3 seats to the WPT Canadian Spring Championship. Joel was one of the winners of a seat, and also fortunate because his friends have all driven down to rail him on the final table today! It’s notable that in addition to Dave, his rail also includes this year’s Event 4 Champion, Andrew Dick! That’s some kind of home poker league!

Here’s a shot of the home poker table where the league matches occurred:
