Here are a few additional photos from levels 5 and 6.
Some big names have just joined
The players continue to roll in and we’ve recently been joined by some big names in poker: Antonio Esfandiari, Xuan Liu, and Rubens “Ben” Tarzia have all taken their seats in the past 10 minutes or so.
Leaders to start level 5
Players have just returned from their second break of the day and during the pause we got updated counts for the larget stacks in the tournament. So far no one has taken a stranglehold on this flight, but there are a few players who have built up a strong foundation for growth – but there’s a long long way to go yet!

A few more players to watch
Registration continues to grow in the WPT Canadian Spring Championship as people take advantage of late reg and take their seats to begin the tournament.
One of the new players deserves particular attention – Rodney Ramalho. Rodney is a local grinder who has had a true breakthrough in the past year, including a deep run in an EPT Main Event plus a win in the Deepstacks Poker Tour Championship event in Calgary in 2015. In the interim he has also had two top results here at Playground Poker Club – so not only does he have game, he has game on his “home court” as well.
Some of the others to join us recently:
- Ami Alibay
- Allan Puzantian
- Paul Mohorea
- Roland Israelishvili
- Stan Jablonski
Player disqualified
In level 2 of the tournament there was an unusual incident that ended up in a player being disqualified from the tournament.
The player had a pre-purchased ticket, so his stack was on the table from the beginning of the tournament. The player arrived at the table late – early in level 2 – and moved the stack so that it was in front of him and closer to the rail, and then proceeded to fill out and sign the release form required of all players in this event.
Once he handed back the release form, the dealer mistook the player for a late registrant (not just a late arrival) and passed a new stack to him. The player didn’t say anything – rather, he attempted to make the error as “invisible” as possible, first by aligning the stacks so the dealer might not notice, and eventually by pulling 25K in chips off the table and putting them in his pocket.
The “missing” stack was noticed 30 minutes later (on the next dealer change), at which point the facts of the situation were established. Prior to being escorted from the room, the player in question produced the 25K in chips from his pockets.
All of the chips in question (including his live stack) have been removed from play.

Shuffle up and deal!
Mike Sexton and Playground’s Martin Roy have made the opening announcements and with the formalities taken care of, cards are now in the air for Day 1b of the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship!
As predicted, attendance in Day 1b is has already reached close to the peak of yesterday’s attendance, and late registration continues for more than 6 more hours to that number will continue to climb.
Best of luck to everyone in the field today!
It’s time for Day 1b
Today at Playground Poker Club is the second of three starting flights in the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship. Day 1a had 79 entries, and the normal progression of starting day popularity suggests that today’s starting flight will feature quite a few more players, with everything culminating on Day 1c which should be the largest of the starting days.
27 players have already qualified for Day 2, and today’s qualifiers will add to that number – but only after players survive to bag chips at the end 10 levels of gruelling poker action!
Remember that this is a “next-day re-entry” event. This means that any player who plays in one or more flights may re-enter in a subsequent starting flight – players may enter each of the 3 starting flights once. If a player is skilled and lucky enough to qualify through multiple Day 1s, only their largest qualifying stack will be on the table to begin Day 2.
Blinds for each Day 1 will be 60 minutes in length and players start with a 30,000 chip starting stack. There will be 15 minute breaks after every 2nd level except level 6, which will be followed by a 45-minute long dinner break. Then end of the dinner break also marks the end of late registration today.
Day 2 will begin at 12:00pm on Monday May 2nd.
