Josue Sauvageau

Josue Sauvageau

Day 1a of the WPT Canadian Spring Championship got underway today at 11am and play continued through 10 60-minute levels before the remaining players were asked to count and bag their chips to return to play on Day 2. There were 79 entries in today’s first of three starting flights in the tournament, and by the end of the night, 27 remained.

Any player who entered today’s starting flight in the tournament may re-enter in a subsequent starting flight – this is a “next day re-entry” event, meaning that players enter each of the 3 starting flights once. Day 2 will begin at 12:00pm on Monday May 2nd.

Note that these are player-recorded chip count totals. The actual chips have been sealed in bags which will be opened by the players to be returned to play on Day 2.

After 10 levels of play in this Day 1a in the WPT Canadian Spring Classic presented by partypoker.net, the 79 player starting field ended with only 27 survivors.

The race at the top is very close, as once overwhelming chip-leader Kunru Ma saw his stack depreciate in the last 2 levels. Leading the field in this first of three starting flights is Josue Sauvageau who bagged 162,900 after 10 hours of play.

Below is a list of the top 10 stacks of Day 1a – a full list of player-reported chip counts will be made available shortly.

    Shevlock joins the leaders

    Scott Shevlock

Main1a-8027Scott Shevlock just found himself on the winning end of a 150K+ pot in the later stages of this Day 1a in the WPT CSC.

He opened to 1,800 from under the gun, and found a call from Joshua Frederick on the button. Roland Israelashvili then placed a 3bet to 7,800 from the small blind. Scott waited a moment before 4betting to 20,500, which triggered Joshua’s quick fold. Roland seemed hesitant but eventually announced all-in, which Scott was happy to call.

Scott: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts
Roland: Ace of Spades King of Diamonds

With almost no sweat on the Jack of Clubs 8 of Clubs 8 of Hearts Ace of Clubs 7 of Spades board, Scott earned the double up of his nearly 75,000 chip stack, putting him amongst the leaders of this first flight in the Main Event.

    Level 8

    Damjan Radanov

Kunru Ma has taken over the chip-lead midway through level 8 in Day 1a of the WPT CSC, and he now sits on a hefty stack close to 175,000. Paul Scott is still amongst the leaders, and holds 155,000 – good for second in chips. Rounding up the top three stacks is Seth Davies, who has climbed up to over 140,000.

Recent notable eliminations include the likes of Ramesh Puradchithasan and Darryll Scott Fish, while Jean-Philippe Piquette, Brian Altman, Pascal Lefrancois and Timothy Reilly made their exit before the dinner break.

There will be a break in 30 minutes, at which point we will bring a more detailed update on chip counts.

    Dinner break leaderboard

    Naseem Kteily

After 6 levels of action, the players in the WPT Canadian Spring Championship are now on a 45-minute dinner break where they can indulge in the buffet offered by the house.

After a huge hand moments before the break, Paul Scott has taken over the chip lead in these early stages of the Main Event. He turned a straight versus the top set of Tim Reilly, and top two-pairs of Serge Pouliot on a rainbow board showing AT7 Q. The river was a blank, tripling Paul’s stack up while putting a serious dent in the two other players.

Here is a look at the current leaderboard, entering level 7:

An improbable hand played out a few minutes ago on table 68 between Timothy Reilly (utg+1) and Paul Scott (button). Tim opened to 750, then action folded around to Paul who 3bet to 2,375. Action was back on Tim, who 4bet to 5,700 only to be rewarded with a shove from the button for 21,475. Tim made the call.

Tim: King of Spades King of Hearts
Paul: Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades

Immediately in the window the dealer showed the Queen of Diamonds – followed on the middle flop card, King of Clubs… but unfortunately for Tim, right in the door was the Queen of Hearts. The 7 of Spades 3 of Clubs runout weren’t the King of Diamonds Tim needed… and Paul doubled up.

Naseem Kteily has been on fire since the last break and has greatly improved his holdings at the expense of Roland Israelashvili and others at his table. The WPT Live Updates team have the story of how he got the bulk of his chips: Kteily and Israelashivili Clash in Monster 86K Pot

We missed the action in the hand, but just now a player folded correctly holding a (middle) set of 5s on a 5 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 8 of Spades flop – Naseem was playing the 4 of Spades 7 of Clubs for a flopped straight and stacked up more of the table’s chips.
