    Quang, Rosa both eliminated

The WPT is inexorably winding its way to 18 players remaining and the next full seating redraw. In the past half hour, both Marcello Rosa and David Quang have been eliminated from Table 39 to bring the event to 19 players left. Assuming one more player busts this level, Day 3 will end at the end of level 22 (in about 30 minutes).

    21st place: Marcello Rosa, $11,480

Thanh Phu can’t stage a miracle comeback

    Thanh Phu

After losing the majority of his stack with Ace of Clubs 10 of Clubs versus the Queen of Clubs Queen of Hearts of Marcell Delgrasso on the hand before the break, Thanh Phu came back into level 22 with only 31,000 in chips, and in the big blind position.

Marcello opened to 32,000 from middle position, and Joel Miller followed from the button. Thanh slid his remaining chips in the middle, and they were 3 to the flop. Marcello fired 20,000 on a 2 of Clubs 3 of Clubs King of Diamonds board, but let go of his hand on the King of Clubs turn when he was faced with a bet of 40,000 from Joel.

Thanh was happy to see he still had some chance of winning with his 10 of Spades 5 of Diamonds, however the 3 of Hearts river secured it for Joel and his pair of 6 of Spades 6 of Clubs.

    22nd place: Thanh Phu – $10,330.00

    23rd place: Joseph Cappello

Joseph Cappello has been eliminated in 23rd place from the WPT Canadian Spring Championship.

Guillaume Nolet opened the action with a utg raise to 27K and Jason Lavallée flatted from the hijack. Action folded around to Joseph, who raised all in from the sb (his all in was for 75K).

Both Guillaume and Jason chose to call and the flop was dealt: 10 of Clubs 9 of Spades 3 of Hearts. Guillaume opens on the flop to 90K and Jason folded. The remaining players revealed their hands.

Guillaume: 10 of Hearts 9 of Hearts
Joseph: Queen of Hearts Jack of Diamonds

The 7 of Spades 2 of Hearts on the turn and river kept Guillaume in the lead and Joseph was sent to the tournament desk to collect his payout coupon.

    Antonio Esfandiari eliminated

    Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari was trying to take advantage of an unopened pot when he moved in for nearly 200,000 from the button, however Zheng Wei was not going to let him get away with it. Once Zheng made the call, Marcello Rosa threw his hand into the muck from the big blind.

Antonio: 4 of Hearts 6 of Hearts
Zheng: Ace of Spades Jack of Spades

Zheng flopped top-pair and held to win on a 9 of Spades Jack of Clubs 10 of Hearts 4 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs board, eliminating a very dangerous opponent in the process.

Players in the Second Chance event have returned from their second break of the day and with the end of the break comes the end of late registration. The final number of players in the Second Chance event is 127 – we’ll publish full prize details shortly.

The leaderboard at the break is short – one player, Kevin O’Donnell, has moved way ahead of the field and is playing 144K and just one more player – Ari Engel – is over 100K. There are several players in the 80K to 95K range so we’ll see if any of them to make a move.

    Nicola Basile takes 25th place

    Nicola Basile

Nicola Basile was sitting under the gun with Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts when he found himself all-in and trailing Marcello Delgrasso, who tabled Ace of Spades King of Diamonds. Nicola did manage to pair his queen on the river, however that same card gave Marcello the nut straight, as the board read Jack of Diamonds 7 of Spades 4 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs Queen of Spades.

Ruben Perceval has taken over the chip lead here at the start of level 21, and is the only player (for now) who sits above 1 million in chips.

Thomas Taylor now also sits near the top of the leaderboard after taking a huge pot from David Quang just before the break. We missed the action, however at the end of it all Thomas and his 8 of Spades 8 of Clubs doubled against the Ace of Diamonds King of Spades on a 2 of Hearts Jack of Spades 4 of Hearts 10 of Clubs 5 of Clubs board for a pot of over 900,000.

Samuel Bisrat Tsehai exits in 27th; Francois Goulet places 26th

    Samuel Bisrat Tsehai

Following a late-position open from Ruben Perceval, Samuel Bisrat Tsehai 3bet shoved his almost 200,000 stack in from the button. Antonio Esfandiari quickly moved all-in for under from the big blind, and Ruben got out of the way.

Samuel: Ace of Clubs 4 of Clubs
Antonio: Jack of Spades Jack of Clubs

Board: 3 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts 7 of Diamonds 6 of Spades 8 of Clubs

Antonio doubled his stack up to over 200,000, while Samuel’s was cut in half. We missed the hand, but Samuel was eliminated not long afterwards.

    27th place: Samuel Bisrat Tsehai – $9,050.00

On another table, Fancois Goulet was all-in preflop and flipping, as his Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts shove was called by Brian Altman and his 7 of Spades 7 of Diamonds. Francois failed to improve on the board and made his exit in 26th place.

    Altman hangs around

    Brian Altman

    Brian Altman

    Brian Altman

Brian Altman continues his deep run in this WPT Canadian Spring Championship, and after finding himself on the losing side of a few pots to start his Day 3, he saw his stack drop to just over 10bb.

Sitting under the gun, he slid forward his last 112,000 chips, and found a call from Khaly Dang in late position. The rest of the table got out of the way as the two took a walk to the flop.

Brian: 10 of Spades 10 of Hearts
Khaly: 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs

Brian’s pair held on the King of Clubs 2 of Spades 2 of Hearts Queen of Spades Jack of Hearts board to keep him in the running, and his run for a second big event title this week here in Montreal is still alive. In addition to winning the WSOP-Circuit Main Event just 2 days ago, Brian was also part of the WPT Montreal final table last Fall here at Playground Poker Club, placing 4th out of 697 entries.
