Maria Konnikova raised to 1,600, preflop and both Steven Firestone and Benny Chen called.  When the flop was dealt King of Spades 10 of Hearts Ace of Clubs, all three players checked. When the dealer flipped the turn 5 of Hearts, Maria regarded her opponents at the table before wagering 700. Benny peeked at his cards and called, before Steven shook his head and tossed in his cards. When the Jack of Clubs was dealt on the river, Maria looked at Benny and bet 3,500. Without hesitation, Benny returned his cards to the dealer

We are already up to 265 entries for the day, the players keep arriving.

Just before the first break (after two 60-minute levels) there was a relatively large hand that took place on table 36. Santiago Plante and Mark Bradley were the ones battling it out, and we joined the action after the flop.

Flop: 5 of Spades 8 of Clubs 2 of Hearts

Santiago bet 1,000 utg and was raised to 3,000 by Mark. Santiago called. The turn was a Queen of Diamonds, which led to two checks. The river was an Ace of Spades, and Santiago made a sizable bet for this point in the tournament, 10,000. Without too much hesitation Mark called. Santiago showed his Ace of Spades Queen of Clubs for two pair, and Mark mucked. He told us he also had two pair, just not as large.

The loss definitely put a dent in Mark’s stack, but there remains plenty of poker left to play.

Soares leads the way after first break at WPT Main Event Day 1C

    2018/10/31 | 14:52 by Playground Poker

There are more than 263 entries in today’s WPT Day 1C stint, and late registration continues throughout Day 1C, so that number will continue to grow all the way until the end of level 8. During a fifteen minute break we did a quick chip count and determined that Sebastien Soares was the chip leader with 87,300. He holds a slight lead over Gerald Karlic whose stack measured 86,000 chips.

More and more players a filling the seats, with more than 230 entries so far. It promises to be a huge day at the tables, although we remain in the early goings. That said, every great journey starts with a single step, and so must poker players build their winning stacks slowly over time.

On table 27 we witnessed just that sort of play, with Nikola Isaev and Benjamin Diebold tangling over a tiny pot. Oddly enough, when the cards were eventually flipped at the end of the hand, it looked like both players were slow-playing each other, trying to trap with relatively big hands.

Nikola opened with a small raise of 400 preflop, chasing everyone from the table except the big blind. Benjamin (in the bb) made the call.

Flop: 2 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds Jack of Spades

It was checked to the turn, which was dealt a Ace of Spades. Both players checked again, seeing the river, a 4 of Diamonds. Both players checked again, and showed their cards.

Nikola flipped over a pair of jacks (he had made a set on the flop), and Benjamin flipped over a Q010, having made a straight on the turn. Why did no one bet? It shall remain a mystery!
